A look at different play styles.

Torn, much like any city, attracts all kinds of people. People from different parts of the world, people of different ages, people who each have different experiences and a different outlook on life to anyone who shares their breathing space. Life in the city goes on at a different pace for each of its residents. Some play a slow game, doing crimes as and when they like. Some live at a frantic rate; setting alarms to train, do crimes, wage wars, fly, race and play poker; taking the most from what’s available in town. Most people have goals shared by thousands of others and they work at their own pace to achieve them (or not, as the case may be).

On the other hand, there are people who live life in their own style. They move against the crowd and refuse to be weighed down by what might be considered a normal life for a crime lord. These, possibly eccentric, people are the ones this article concerns itself with.

Torn is a place packed with crime. The hospital in the city is constantly filled with those unfortunate enough to have been caught up in some kind of incident, be it a mauling by guard dogs, a gang attack or an overdose on drugs. The residents of Torn are lucky to have committed individuals that are eager to get them out of hospital. Among the doctors of Torn, Leafeh [467479] stands far above the rest with 9577 revives under his belt (at the time of writing). Leafeh, a man who admits himself that he was once considered by many to be a troll, decided to take the peaceful route in Torn as a form of repentance. He doesn’t spend his energy on warring or training, he instead aims to win people over through pacifism. His non-violent mission has even converted some old enemies into friends. He says, “Obviously my reputation didn't change overnight, and not everyone forgave and forgot, and I don't expect some ever will. But I feel what I do today is more true to my character than what I did in the past. I'd rather help people than hinder them.” If more people followed in his footsteps, who knows? Perhaps Torn would be a far happier place. One thing Leafeh would request, for the future, is more options available for him and for those who are walking down the trail that he has blazed. An expansion of medical specials would probably serve as encouragement for more people to tread this path.

If Torn City were a coin and the pacifists were on one face, then the other face may well be occupied by ‘antagonists’ or ‘intimidators’. These are the people who lure others into attacking simply to destroy them. ‘Level holders’ as they’re commonly known. There are a few renowned level holders, some of whom couldn’t be reached for an interview. Someone who did have time to answer a few questions was Beerstein [1322136], who has held the same level for years. The reason Beerstein first started level holding was because, when new to the game, he refused to divorce his spouse for a new partner and the hopeful bride to be bountied him heavily. As Beerstein got stronger and kept his low level, he realised that these bounties were giving him defends and runaways. He leveled up to 15 so that he could travel and has only raised his level once since (due to an unfortunate miss-click). The only thing he said, when questioned, that he misses out on by maintaining such a low level are the merits and dual weapon courses. Though, in his own humble words, he said, “[It’s] not a big deal since I'm kinda loaded”. People can be infuriated at times when they attack what they perceive to be easy prey and get their behinds handed to them and Beerstein confided in Torn Times that he does get the occasional angry message from players who misjudged their target. Beerstein would recommend level holding to everyone. To quote him, “I've never met a level holder that regretted it, it's impossible to regret something you can change with a few clicks at any time. There's no undo button for power levelers and I see a lot of regret there.”

There are many who would disagree with the opinions given in this article and these will be addressed in future stories. It’s always nice to see the world through a different set of eyes, and the residents of Torn can all learn something by hearing the views of others. Diversity is what makes our world so great, after all.
