Wealth disparity is a global topic. The rich will see it as a matter of little concern, whilst this very divide is what the less fortunate will battle against. While having a little inequality can promote investments at a national level, too big a rift is certain to be destructive.
The divide between rich and poor in Torn is plain to see. The poor in society have become disenchanted because they are caught in what seems like an inescapable bubble of poverty. Hyperinflation is a worry with even a measly brick costing upwards of $1000 in many shops. Everyone starts with very little, and by noting that the average player holds only $7,731,192, we can see making money in this city is not easy. As your time spent in the city increases, so does the amount of funds at your disposal, generally.
Although not an impossible task, to those living in shacks, gathering enough money to own a private island is a daunting prospect. But is that enough? The divide between those living comfortably and rich folk is just as stark as that between beginners and the middle class. The state of society here reflects that divide. To move from one group to another people have resorted to doing anything to get a quick buck.
The poorest citizens are largely ignored by the city and its people, with the exception of a few generous philanthropists. Help can be found in the forums and in the chats, be it in the form of advice or monetary aid, but this has led to beggars loitering around, pestering others to lend them some money.
Even the richest residents of Torn came from rags. There are many routes to take to find your fortune. Money makes money, and after some time, every dollar adds up. If you ask them how they made their money, you will hear many different answers: trading, investments, bounty hunting, mugging, gambling, refraining from gambling and drugs, to name but a few. Some of the more cunning or lucky, depending on where you stand on such matters, even took advantage of loopholes in the stock market to make their billions. Most of these options are still open (loopholes in the stock market being the only exception). With enough perseverance, there’s nothing to stop even the lowliest player from finding their way to their billions.
One of the biggest traps in Torn that perpetuates the wealth divide is the casino. Billions of dollars are lost every day. It’s everyone’s dream to gain billions of dollars for no real work. If you can be disciplined, you can improve your chances of using the casino as a tool to make cash. Most people aren’t diciplined.
The divide is likely to endure until the very end days of the city. The question is, will you be sitting on a throne or lying down in your own blood, or someone else's?
