The Big Win

SIXSIXSEVEN [1451685]
It's that time again. You can tell even without checking your watch. By now your Nerve and Energy are topped off and you can get a quick TC "sesh" in before you head off to class.

You mindlessly log in as you have the 10,000 times before; an expert now, at navigating the new mobile interface. You see the familiar glow of the Events and Mailbox buttons and try to recall if it's already been two weeks since you started LAW2890 - Public Law. You click Events.

A list longer than your mobile screen reveals page after page of failed attacks, and you're not even in a Faction. With whom could you be at war, and how could you defend so many attacks? It's the beginning of the month.

Panicked, now, you check your messages, looking for the telltale sign that someone disagreed with that one forum post so strongly, they've recruited their faction to make city life a temporary hell for you. But you're met with only more confusion. "CONGRATULATIONS!!!!" reads the first subject, and similar accolades follow a litany of unread messages below.

Then it dawns on you. Your last casino token, spent on a throwaway chance and One Million Torn City Dollars. Could it be?

"Congratulations! You won $11,933,000,000 in the monthly Holy Grail Lottery! Body guards have been sent to temporarily protect you."

This scenario plays out once per day, every week, and once a month. A confusing array of information -at first- greets lottery winners that is then quickly sorted to the realization that they've actually won. Once the weekly, but now the monthly lottery is that bastion of hope that many players, both old and new, wish to one day find greeting them upon login as many already have.

This reporter seeks to share with you what it's like.

"I started [buying lotto tickets] the day I won." Beerstein [1322136] informs me, much to our collective chagrin. Skoosh [1191878], a 2000-day veteran, on the other hand, was days away from quitting Torn when he was bestowed with billions.

Among those interviewed, the average investment in lottery tickets and vouchers nears $200,000,000. One user invested $1,000,000,000 in vouchers alone.

Winning, however, is quite the yellow brick road. Torn Staff changed the long-standing practice of a seven day protection period down to just three days. Shaknor [1592807] relays his dismay at the change: "...the new protection for winning is only 3 days and it was not advertised at all. Overall it was very sly of no one to mention the new 3 days rule." He continues, offering this sage advice in the case of post-winning muggings: "Do not buy tickets unless you are going to be online for the draw, or at least 2 days after the draw."

And it doesn't end there. Nothing makes Torn the attraction that it is without enormous gobs of jealousy. Another lottery-winning user mentioned that his own Torn friends accused him of greed and indulgence at having even more money to add to his already-substantial savings. The dregs and beggars were, of course, expected and numerous.

Finally, this reporter was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Lucky Break honor winners' fortunes remain largely intact after their big wins. All those interviewed save one maintain their new fortune to this day.
