The True Value of a Faction

How much is a faction worth?

The question is often asked around Torn and the answer depends on a lot of factors - all of which are never definite and never certain. Faction value is exactly what this article aims to explore.

Overall, a key component in the value of a faction is the total respect, made up of a combination of current respect and the faction specials bought in the past through trading respect in for specials. Steadfast, historically, has been the most coveted special, increasing gym gains by up to 10%. However, there has been growing popularity for Hermetic - responsible for reducing drug addiction gains by up to 50% - effectively lowering rehab bills when making the long trip to Zurich, Switzerland. Other popular specials include Salutary (reducing reviving energy cost to 25 energy vs. the standard 75) and Cumber (increases items that can be carried up to 10 while overseas).

Another factor to consider when buying or selling a faction is the rank of that faction. Introduced to Torn in February 2011, the ranking system does not provide ANY direct reward for having a higher rank, however, there is a strong sense of pride associated with having a higher rank than another. Some argue that having a higher rank isn't necessarily better because of the potential respect gains to be earned when climbing up the ladder.

The next most important factor, members, is THE wildcard. Membership requires very careful consideration. A faction with loyal members adds great value to the price, however, the fact that a faction is being sold brings loyalty into question. How long will those members stay? Will they continue to fight for the success of a faction that has changed hands? History demonstrates that loyalty cannot be bought - we must agree, though, that trust and mutual respect are important in building a successful faction - and those qualities must be considered prior to sale.

The final factor (and most straightforward component) of the value is the faction's upgrades, including: member capacity (maximum 100), armories, forum and laboratory (for building dirty bombs). These upgrades are fixed and cost money, making them easily measurable and an important part of determining the total value.

An ideal faction to purchase would be one without any specials and hundreds of thousands of respect, giving the new owner complete control over where respect is spent. However, the idea of a perfect faction is merely an idea - one never hears of a faction leader who builds up without using upgrades or specials - despite the potential intention of selling the faction for profit in the future.

So...how much is a faction worth?

Well, like the old saying says - "...[it is] only worth what buyers are willing to pay." The statement has held true for centuries of trade and is not lost on our great city of Torn. But our shrewd traders, on both sides of the deal, will always be looking to pay as little (buyer) or get as much (seller) as is possible. To be fair, a seller might inflate the price because of their emotional attachment to the faction, but the buyer needs to bring the realism that refocuses the price to something fair that both parties can shake hands on.
