Faction Of Old - Plague Family

The Plague group of factions represented some of the earliest factions in Torn. Known as "Plague Family," they were also the longest running dynasty in Torn.

The Plague Family consisted of three factions: The main faction Engineered Plague (EP) and subfactions Infected Plague (IP) and Killer Plague (KP). The group set very clear stats and level requirements in order for members to have a "faction career path." Teammates would start in the weakest faction of the three, and as they levelled up, they also moved up until they reached EP.

Engineered Plague was originally the name of a Guild (very similar to factions) in another game called Archmage, which is no longer around. A group of players joined Torn when it was in Beta and planned to create a version of their guild in Torn. Titan [227473] and Templar [1281415] were the driving force behind EP and led the group for a long time. regulator906 [79649], -KC [130919], Peachy [10474], shmiffy04 [274028], RiskyMineWorker [12494], fcberke [271021] and Vimes [37] were a few of the other early members.

When factions first came about, the Plague Family received faction IDs 8 and 32 - only 32 remains (in this day, Born Fighting which is led by Woolis' [1568593]). As mentioned in a previous article, Know your city Factions Part 1, before factions were created, players would put a tag in front of their name to show that they were part of a larger group. Once modern group organizations came into the picture, even with two factions, the Plague Family was unable to house all their members in a sustainable manner due to the costs associated with factions. As many great teams do, they eventually found a way to grow in order to be able to accept most of those who wanted to be part of the family.

Engineered Plague, like many factions today, had members from all over the world. EP usually chained at midnight so that they could refill at the new day mark - requiring perfect chaining discipline.

EP was also part of a war that was named by members of Torn, World Wars One and Two. These were big fat wars that involved most of the strongest factions at the time; Secret Service, Plague Family, 39th Street Killers, SUN and and their associated allies (for EP, Secret Service was a great ally). While the wars initially started with two factions, many allies got involved and used their relationships to expand the fighting beyond what may have been originaly intended. These aggressive conflicts raged on for weeks and, in the end, resulted in stalemates.

Engineered Plague managed to gain a top spot in the Hall of Fame, for a time, due to their relentless chaining and the unofficial honor of winning one of the first faction wars. Taking advantage of the tagged member naming mentioned earlier, EP warred like crazy until their targets gave into the Plague Family demands. EP were also the first faction to reduce another faction's respect to zero. In fact, at the time they achieved this, the target faction actually went into negative figures as faction deletion at zero respect hadn't been coded yet (so it took a day or two before the losing faction got deleted).

The faction disbanded quite like Secret Service did - older members went inactive - and the faction lost the competitive edge.

Engineered Plague are a faction that are worthy of remembering, and shall not be forgotten in a hurry.
