Obsessive Compulsive Torn

Obsession: the domination of ones' thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire etc.

Everyone suffers from it at some point in their lives. It can be over women, men, food, work, education, thrills or games. It can be a dangerous thing, often hard to notice before you have been sucked in too far, with the claws of obsession clasped tightly around your mind. They can persist for years or vanish in an instant.

Gaming is an addictive endeavour which can often turn into somewhat of an obsession - Torn is no exception. But the question is where is the line between playing a game with a passion, and becoming obsessed with a game? This is a tough question to answer, and views will differ greatly among players.

Looking at Torn; there are some players that begin to twitch when they know they are on full energy and who set alarms to train. Is this obsession? Or is it just trying to progress in the game quicker - after all, training takes just ten seconds. Other players laugh at those who set alarms, but at the same time spend large a amount of time on Torn in the forums or warring, maybe blind to their own obsession. Often, players are reluctant to admit or show how much time they actually spend on Torn. A quick search of the forums, and you will find many discussions about Torn clashing with real life, whether it be about angry spouses or the battle of "going out" vs playing Torn. These discussions can sometimes feel as if players are attempting to prove how unaddicted they are or how socialable they are through their comments.

This leads to the question -Is there anything wrong with spending so much time on Torn? Contrary to what many people believe, playing Torn a lot doesn't automatically mean you have no life. Some hold the crazy belief that one can have both a social life and a gaming life - As with most things, too much of anythings can have negative effects.

So the big question - When does one cross the line from being passionate about a game, and being obsessed with a game?

It is difficult to measure, and even more difficult to tell if you yourself have become addicted. Perhaps things such as finding it difficult to detach yourself from Torn when doing other activities, or a need to log on regardless of the real life situation are signs that you are tinkering on the border of obsession. However, everyone's perception of Torn obsession will differ depending on their free time and other life commitments.

How close would you put yourself to the line of obsession? And when do we differentiate between obsession and addiction?
