People play games for all sorts of reasons - enjoyment, passing the time, socialisling. However, for some gamers a game, much like some experience whilst reading books or watching movies, is something that they can lose themselves in. Often, those that don't have an interest in games label those that do as unsociable or "geeks", which may be true in some cases, however, these labels are often far from the truth. Gaming can be considered a hobby just like reading, playing chess, cycling or extreme sports.

With a game like torn you rarely get to see the faces of those player with which you communicate and play the game with, and it is easy to forget that there are people sitting at the receiving end of messages, event and discussions. Perhaps more importantly it is easy to forget what type of person you yourself are.

As Torn is a role-playing game a little chest thumping and smack talk is understandable, but with torn also being a place where people chat constantly and potentially build friendships (and sometimes more), is it a smart move to be a little considerate of how we interact with fellow players?

Some players will be more or less exactly the same as they are in real life as they represent themselves on torn, minus the mugging of old ladies and burning down of every warehouse they happen to come across. On the other hand, others put on a different act from that which they show in day to day life. Whether this be an angel of a person turning into a devil, or wimpy child turning into a gangsta.

Some would say this is what a role playing game is all about, being able step into the shoes of someone that does things you would never dream of doing, or can't do, and take on the personality of how you believe such a person would act - and that is part of the gaming experience.

The point is that you never know who is sitting on the other side of you interactions in Torn, and it is quite easy to forget that there is indeed another human on the other side; it could be a mother of three, a successful lawyer, a teenager struggling with studies, an average kid just passing the time.

Whether this thought changes the way you interact with other players is dependent on the individuals, and there isn't necessarily a single correct way...but perhaps there is a minimum amount of respect and character that should be upheld.
