In April 2016 Torn's military personnel numbered more than 80,000 for the first time in the city's history, maintaining an upwards trend which has seen a steady increase ever since the mass desertion incident of November 2011. At the present rate we could see a force of over 100,000 soldiers before the year is out, which begs the question, why is the military so attractive to Torn's citizens? And also who, if anyone, are they preparing to fight?
The attractiveness of a military career is plain for all to see, and in November 2014 the military overtook Torn City Hospital to become the city's largest employer. Whereas Torn's citizens were historically described as too deranged, drunk and incapable of following simple instructions, this sudden period of mass military employment has flown in the face of such observations, but to what end?
A continuous recruitment drive such as this does not merely occur; it is deliberately planned and executed by an organisation with a clear plan of action. Based on this analysis we can surmise but two possible explanations for this swelling of army numbers - either Torn faces a serious external threat which must be dealt with in the near future, or the threat is internal, and Torn's military top brass is preparing to intervene.
With regards to the former, Torn's status as an independent free city remains protected and guaranteed by several major world governments. An invasion of the region would be deemed an act of war by many, and could lead to a global conflict on a scale not seen since World War 2. Torn is conversely unlikely to attempt military action against any other nations around the world, for the simple reason that such an act would seriously dent its popularity as the planet's premium destination for guns, girls, gear and gambling.
But as for the latter, an internal mass conflict within Torn is certainly a possibility. Some neighbourhoods have actively called for a military presence on the streets in response to the recent surge in violent attacks seen lately. Torn is hardly a children's playground at the best of times, but there has been an alarming rise in aggression ever since December of last year, with this sudden peak coming only three months after Psycho September 10th, a brutal day of violence which saw over 70,000 attacks take place in a single day.
But is martial law really the answer? Most would say not, instead advocating for tougher jail sentences, ammunition rationing, and a temporary ban on narcotics to quell the aggression. There have even been some who believe we should reform the Torn City Hospital admittance policy so that those with injuries clearly obtained through violence are made to pay a premium.
Thankfully such action has been ruled out by the head of TCH Erich Hoffman, who responded "If we were to charge violent criminals and their victims they'd treat themselves at home, and we'd be left with nothing but wards full of people off their norks on Xanax. And if I have to change one more junkie doped up on smurf balls I'm done. Absolutely done."
Regardless of their motives, it seems something is afoot within the Torn Military Headquarters, and an equally dangerous air of malcontent seems to be bubbling under the surface of Torn. The military clearly does not intend to stand idly by and watch chaos unfold, and when coupled with the rumours of new and improved weaponry about to hit the shelves it seems inevitable mass conflict will soon bring misery to the people of Torn. But between whom this war will take place, and how it will affect the people of Torn...that, we cannot know.
