Was 7 Days Enough?

In a series of dramatic raids which took place over the festive period, several notable Torn citizens were discovered to have been trading Torn City Dollars for external currency - a direct breach of the first rule in Torn's 10 Game Offenses and Punishments.

One of the most notable convicted sellers of TCD was Big__Al, who was known mostly for his exploits in responding to a poker dispute with a Dirty Bomb. Big__Al has now been permanently banished from the city due to this severe rule breach, and the exact number of TCD sellers caught in this latest operation is expected to be revealed in the next edition of the Torn City Newsletter.

However, when several of those caught buying TCD were only slapped with a seven-day sentence, some citizens - led by the perpetually exasperated Maxheadroom - then sought answers as to why their punishments did not fit the "lengthy ban" mentioned specifically in the rules. So is Torn going soft on Real Money Traders, or is this yet another example of how eager our citizens are to form a lynch mob at the mere sniff of perceived injustice?

I sought answers from the very top on this issue, and I was assured that while the seven-day ban is standard practice for a first-time RMT offence (as is the case for multi accounts, impersonation and other such crimes), the real punishments are to be found out of sight of ordinary Torn folk. And they are not soft, not by anyone's definition.

Those convicted of purchasing Torn City Dollars are stripped of both their illegally acquired cash and the gains made as a result of these illicit funds, in addition to being placed into Federal Jail for 999 days while further investigations are made. This combination of penalties renders the entire act of paying for TCD pointless, as not only will players lose the real world cash paid for this service, but the act of cash retraction also drops their balance sheet well below the red line.

Have you tried existing in Torn City with minus $10billion? It ain't easy, bub.

If it transpires this was a first time offence, the losses incurred by a player in Torn Dollars and real world cash are then deemed a sufficient punishment. Because of this, many former buyers of TCD struggle to re-enter Torn society due to the massive negative balance accrued as a result of these deductions, so those who call for permanent deletion may do well to note this. Only the laziest citizens attempt to make gains using illicit funds, but if these people do wish to reform themselves, Torn City's laws are humanitarian enough to allow determined citizens to make amends - up to a point.

This position may be seen as weak by some, but if every offence in Torn was punished with a permanent expulsion then I fear many of those calling for such draconian measures may end up banished themselves. According to my sources, each case is tried on an individual basis, and if longer punishments seem necessary they can be easily handed out by the powers that be. This situation is far preferable to a blanket banning; as I imagine our streets would be empty by noon should Torn take such a heavy-handed approach to law enforcement. But is this really what Torn's most vocal citizens want? Or are they just letting off yet another vent of steam in the direction of our hard-working staff?

It seems this whole issue is nothing more than a rehashed version of the recent salt-mine that was Marc's Staff Changes thread, as in both cases a single, angry voice has attempted to reduce the public's trust in the authorities and their ability to mete out justice. Once more, a person with only a tenuous grasp of the facts as denounced an official decision made by those with more information, and once more people have merrily hopped aboard this heavily opinionated bandwagon.

I am surprised the bandwagon's wheels even turn considering the weight of knowledge on board. Although, of course, I am forgetting to consider the mitigating effects of all that hot air released by its passengers.

The fact is, Torn's authorities do as much as they can to inform the public of how these RMT traders are caught and punished, but there is a limit to what they can reveal while maintaining their ability to stay one step ahead of the game. Sadly, Maxheadroom's erroneous claim that Torn is soft on these criminals will only encourage more people to take the risk, and this will lead to both Torn and its citizens losing out in the long run.

The majority of individuals who try to purchase Torn currency using external cash often fail anyway before they've even started. Our investigations conclude that 9 out of every 10 transactions which involve TCD being traded for real world currencies are a scam, with the fraudulent sellers knowing full well that you can't complain to the authorities. The remaining 1 in 10 are always caught eventually, and with new techniques developed to aid this task, this spate of recent convictions will certainly not be the last.

Right now several more investigations are underway, and those involved or suspected of being involved in RMT are being monitored, charged and sentenced in a constant, on-going process.

If you think RMT is worth the risk then you're in for a rude awakening, because you will be caught.

You may feel seven days is no kind of punishment at all, but when your balance is minus ten billion we guarantee you'll think otherwise. Especially if we make you listen to Craig David's Seven Days repeatedly throughout your sentence.

And you may believe that if your transaction hasn't been flagged yet it never will be. But let me assure you, it has.

So make sure your pyjamas are clean boys and girls, because you can expect a knock at your door very soon indeed. Nothing stays secret in Torn, not now, not ever. Your past will catch up with you. Real Money Traders never win. And even if you're only purchasing a few million to get you through the latest faction war, just take a moment to ask yourself...is it worth it?

Torn's staff can see what you're doing, and when they catch you, it's game over.
