SA vs JFK - Clash of the Titans

Territory warfare has been out for some time now, and since it's release a grand total of zero interesting wars have followed. So far, most territorial conflicts have involved small skirmishes between minor factions, although this is expected to increase once Sectors 2 and 1 become available.

But why is this? Why has there been such a lack of large-scale conflict? Well, instead of jumping into the new system head first, many factions have instead opted to set up termed farming wars. For those that don't know what a farming war is, it is where a faction runs 100 chains during which time they are not particularly looking for a fight back.

The new craze was/is to set up a three-way farm war, as this had the bonus of building up a juicy claim bonus for all three factions involved. But other than these super fun non-competitive farming wars, there has been little action in territories war-wise, or not in the HoF at least.

Until now.

Just over a week ago a thread popped up in the forums - one of those semi-interesting "players personal top factions threads" which tend to come around a couple of times a year. This time much of the debate was about the rankings of the two strongest factions in Torn - Just Fer Killin (JFK) and Subversive Alliance (SA).

For the most part, it seemed everyone was in agreement that these two beastly factions were a fair way above other factions in terms of strength and dominance. But the biggest question was the same as it has always been: Which is the number one faction in Torn?

After pages and pages of discussion, we found out absolutely nothing but other players' opinions. I suppose that was to be expected; it is the forums after all. But either way, the players needed a war!

And a war is exactly we got!

News of its outbreak first came to the forums on 25th March via a timely, all be it poorly received, post by Champion. This announcement was given no credence by many, but a little while later another thread was created by an SA member, Critch, who confirmed that war would indeed take place at 10:00AM Torn Time.

SA had been farming respect before the war with JFK, but at 2:36:58 PM on the 24th of March they paused to restack for the forthcoming assault. SA have been fishing for wars over the past couple of months, but nobody had bitten. Not surprisingly either, as to go toe to toe with the giant that is SA is no small challenge, one that no faction in the HoF (apart from JFK) was willing to meet.

SA informed JFK at 9:00am TCT on the 25th of March that they would be declaring war. Z_junior read the message when he woke up around noon and told his team at around 2:00 PM TCT.

There were talks between SA and JFK about a termed war taking place; however, this didn't pan out for one reason or another. And so perhaps the most anticipated war of the past twelve months commenced!

Unfortunately, after the community had waited a year or more to see these two juggernauts engage in a massive chaotic spectacle, most people missed the entire thing, since it took JFK just under five hours to claim victory.

26/03/17 2:48:48 PM JFK claimed victory over Subversive Alliance, the war is over! Your faction received 3,359 Bonus respect.

So that settles it, JFK is number one and SA suck.

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple. Not only do SA not suck, quite the opposite, but one war between two titans is hardly enough to make a clear judgement. History tells us there have been plenty of wins and losses on both sides, and hopefully, this will be but one of many articles over the next few months covering an epic battle between these two colossal factions.

Regardless of the result, congratulations must be given to both factions. JFK should be commended for swiftly steamrollering their opponent despite having to fight at short notice. And SA must be respected for having the balls to declare and go head to head with JFK, who some would argue can safely be called the strongest faction in Torn - at least until the next war, anyway.

But one question which many people asked in the aftermath of this war is why it was so one-sided? Both factions prepared for the war adequately, and win or lose the majority of combatants from both parties agreed in advance there would be no excuses. However, there is no harm in analysing what contributed to JFK's victory.

Before the war, some thought that JFK might be a little rusty having not warred competitively for a very long time. In fact, it could be said that both factions needed to stretch their legs, as they are simply too strong to be able to challenge anyone but each other in a straight up guest free war (perhaps even one where they allow generous guests).

This makes the fact that their last head to head was around two years ago rather perplexing - many would expect multiple wars between two factions who can only war each other for a challenge. Perhaps other HoF factions need to step up and fight these two behemoths, even in the face of certain defeat?

Although, that may take some persuading.

So if both factions began the war equally out of shape, what else may have contributed to JFK's dominant victory? It certainly wasn't numbers, since SA started with 99 members and JFK with approximately 90. Or was it?

JFK's roster is always a difficult one to figure out since they have their core member base that stays put, and then they have their sub-factions as well as long-standing members that are out visiting or guesting in other friendly factions. JFK knows who is family and who is not, but to the outsider, it isn't so clear. Altogether a dozen or so JFK members returned home to bolster their roster for the war, and this uncertainty would have made it more difficult for SA.

Comparing the two rosters in terms of strength, SA has two members with over 10 billion stats, whereas JFK has considerably more. So even if SA had known who they were facing, it's still likely they wouldn't have been able to handle the vast number of JFK top guns who stalked their members like hawks, stopping them from gaining any momentum.

Four hours in, and the members' lists of both factions looked like this, which is roughly how they stayed for the duration:

Of course, SA's most infamous 10billion plus member is the strongest player in Torn, Bodybagger. So surely he could've made the difference? Well yes, he could have, but unfortunately, he turned up too late to save the day. And even if he did log in earlier, there is no guarantee even BB with his monstrous stats would have been able to halt JFK's onslaught by himself.

However, had SA's two elite members been online from the beginning there is no doubt the war may well have been much closer. As great a faction as SA is, there is no hiding from the fact that JFK out-statted them in the 10b+ range, and without BB or Lonewolf they were sitting ducks.

So, the question on many people's minds is this: Without BB, could SA challenge JFK? Make no mistake, with or without BodyBagger SA are still a long way ahead of the rest of HoF, so much so that no one has dared to war them. But exactly how close they are to JFK with a fully stocked roster from the outset, well that is something we'll have to wait to find out.

(JFK seemingly having a bit of fun with BodyBagger)

Ultimately, though, JFK showed why they are number one in Torn at the moment, and why they were too much for SA on this particular occasion. They fought on short notice against a strong opponent and beat them in no time at all. No doubt this will spur SA to evaluate and come back for round two better prepared than ever, and hopefully, we won't have to wait another two years for the privilege of witnessing it.

But as it stands, the result is clear.

JFK 1 - SA 0
