Torn Territories Remain Unclaimed

A survey conducted by the Torn City Times has discovered that only 57.3% of the city has been claimed as Faction territory since it was made possible on the 14th of February, with vast swathes of Torn's three available sectors still up for grabs at the time of going to print.

Sector 6 is the most virginal region of Torn right now, with 49.3% of its 756 territories remaining untouched, unspoilt and as pure as the driven snow. Sector 7's 261 free territories make up 34.5% of its unclaimed property, but perhaps most surprising is the fact that 44.5% of Sector 5's valuable blocks still awaits conquest on the eve of Sector 4's release.

Why factions are unwilling to take up these easily available territories is not immediately apparent, especially since the prospect of having to defend them is, for the time being, a distinctly remote possibility. Many of Torn's top factions have their eyes on more valuable territories located further towards the city centre, and with so much free space on offer, you're only likely to be challenged should you occupy an area of particularly high value.

Or it has an amusing name, like SOD, GOB, or JEB.

The release of Sector 4 coincides with an expansion in the number of territories one Faction is allowed to hold, with this figure set to rise to nine come the 14th of March. Bearing this in mind, it seems unfathomable that a Faction without territory would not seek to claim an entire block of cheap, discrete property, like this one in Sector 6.

In between two areas owned by Guardians of Asgaard and Nub Navy lies a block of twelve available territories, and if one were to apply for ownership of the nine most valuable, you could acquire 247 daily respect for relatively little risk. Rather than your Faction's investment being tied up in one piece of prime real estate, it seems far more beneficial to go after a less-attractive block of hobo properties and reduce the likelihood of losing one or more individual territories.

And these are by no means the only worthwhile regions on offer, with free territories worth far more spotted across Sectors 7, 6 and 5; depending on how close you're willing to get to some of Torn's most powerful and influential factions. Is this the reason why so many areas remain unoccupied? Are Torn's smaller factions fearful of stepping on the toes of the rich and famous? They certainly shouldn't be.

Subversive Alliance currently holds a series of high-value territories in the southernmost part of Sector 5's west branch, but if you were to head further south, you would find a plethora of empty 68-valued territories just begging to be entered. A few blocks north, Forged Through War have carved out their own area of influence, but once more you'll find many 68-value properties whose status can only be described as gaping.

Even better prospects are to be found on the Eastern side of the city in close proximity to PT-Family. The 13th rank Faction led by Alguem may have taken several 135-value territories such as DAD, EDE and DDE by the Estate agents, but there are plenty of 79-valued blocks right on their doorstep, and even some 101-valued properties located on the outskirts of the military base.

The availability of these territories makes some of the city's rare territorial battles seem all the more bizarre, given the rewards on offer elsewhere in return for little or no conflict. I personally saw Flux and Darkside fight over the 33-valued territory TYF, and I later bore witness to the futile dust-up between LI Juniors and Your Nightmare over the frankly worthless LQF.

Yet if either of these Factions had cared to look, they would have found several valuable and unoccupied territories right under their noses. But nevertheless, whether they were oblivious or not, the two rival gangs fought to the bitter end over these areas. And the result was something I did not stick around to find out. I had things to do, people to see. I'm sure you understand.

But I couldn't help thinking that the whole situation felt like two rats fighting over a dog turd in an alleyway, despite there being 960 freshly baked pizzas on the ground next to them.

(this guy gets it)

However, they're not the only ones who seem intent on needlessly fighting over territories, with a few other notable conflicts having occurred across the city over the past month. These outbreaks of violence are likely to increase in both number and severity as the stakes are raised, but any wannabe conquistadors would be wise to avoid an incursion into any territory held by one particular Faction - Impulse.

As of 15.00 TCT on the 13th of March, this Faction, led by Torn veterans Eagle and DoomKitty, has successfully repelled each one of the five attacks wrought upon its property by envious assailants. This situation is likely to change now that I've drawn attention to their streak, and I expect to receive several angry messages over the coming days as a result. But one Faction which needs no encouragement to challenge the territorial claim of others is the formidable HT, commanded by HT-Supermikk.

HT has invaded fourteen territories in the past month, failing to take the region on just one single occasion. And several Factions have yet to taste the bitter lemons of defeat even once, most notably Hold Your Fire (8 victories), Little Stompers (6 victories), Helvetes in Vegas and Imminent Apocalypse (5 victories each).

103 Factions hold the maximum seven territories at the time of writing, but with 699 new districts being made available as of 14.00 TCT tomorrow, it is anticipated that Factions both flush and forlorn will head straight for Sector 4's major landmarks to acquire its most prestigious territories.

Several 158-value territories can be found around the docks, with MYG, FUG, AYG and ZYG but to name a few. There is another called POG located on the border with Sector 5 just south-east of the college, and a further high-value region called WNG, which you'll find a short walk inland from the south-western part of Torn's coastline. The 138-valued UXE territory on the border with Sector 3 might prove tempting too, located as it is in the centre western portion of the city, with another found at the Pawn shop, one seen north of Item Market, and an additional 138-value property located next to the Auction House.

But going after such high profile territories may prove unwise for even the strongest Factions; partially because of the competition you'll face in acquiring them, but mostly because Torn's territorial bonuses will be increased via the "Influence" system at some point over the coming months.

According to a set of plans I acquired after Chedburn downloaded my Trojan - a Trojan disguised as a dossier of incriminating evidence against Relentless mixed in with some of Nash's amateur nudes - the Influence system will award bonuses to Factions that hold territory surrounding or parallel to an official city area. These bonuses will increase based on how much of the area one Faction envelops, and based on this knowledge; it seems that some of the city's less-attractive territories may yet prove to be rather valuable indeed.

So why am I telling you this? What good can Faction control possibly bring to Torn City and its people? For it was only last month that this very reporter wrote a fear-mongering expose on the rampant Faction activity threatening to engulf the city, so what possible reason could I have for changing my tune so swiftly?

Well, for those of you who do not know, I reside in a modest little Palace on the south bank of the city in a wholesome part of Sector 5. However, this area has recently come under the control of the Canterlot Cartel, who swiftly took five of the territories surrounding my precious home when they were released a fortnight ago.

I have become aware of a growing Bronie presence within my local area as a result of this invasion, and the knock-on effect has been a significant reduction in the number of flaming dog poop bags left upon my doorstep. It seems that while I have something of an affinity with the Bronie community, those who fear their "type" no longer feel safe here, and as such, I have been left well alone by my usual band of less than enthusiastic followers.

I can only thank the Canterlot Cartel for their unwitting intervention in this matter, and offer up my hope that the rest of Torn City will one day feel the warm, comforting security afforded by having their small part of the world taken over by a band of vicious, angry thugs.

Albeit, in this case, thugs with flowing multicoloured hair and glitter on their cheeks.
