Tornography: Icebluefire

Some Torn players stand out from the rest due to their incredible personal achievements. Others are well-known for creating useful tools and guides for the betterment of others. And some people are famous for remaining active in Torn since its inception back in 2004. Icebluefire ticks all of these boxes; this guy has been here since the beginning, reached several notable milestones, and worked tirelessly to provide the most widely used Torn tool in the game's history: Tornstats.com.

Tornstats.com allows players to track and compare their statistical achievements with greater detail than Torn.com allows. The biggest bountiers, the most merciless muggers and the highest earning bazaars can all be identified thanks to this comprehensive data analysis tool. There have been other similar sites created by the likes of JFK, SA and other factions for their own use, but Torn Stats is by far the most popular. So what drove Icebluefire to create it in the first place, how has it evolved, and where does he hope to take the site in future?

"I originally started making Torn Stats because I personally wanted the tools. I wanted a way to track my own growth, and to track my own spies, and to quickly use it to compare with other people that I trusted (faction mates). However, I realized the potential and decided to design it for not just the faction I was in at the time, but to be expandable and open to anyone that wanted to use it for their own private uses and for their own friends and faction mates."

"Over the years, this site has evolved beyond anything I ever dreamed it would be. It was only supposed to be a helpful tool for myself, that I figured maybe a few others would find cool too. But I'm beyond thrilled to see the amount of success it's achieved, and the amount of people that are thoroughly enjoying and using the tools it provides. I couldn't ask for more. My only goal for it now is to provide a useful tool with powerful analytics that help other players improve their game play."

Icebluefire thinks he's probably the biggest user of his site, having created every tool on there with the purpose of using it himself. He originally constructed it while he was a member of Milk And Cookies, but later began to develop Torn Stats in ways which would allow others to analyse their progress as well.

"Personally, I think one of the most interesting features is the player graphs, as it gives a really fascinating look into the player base, as well as giving you an idea of where you measure up in the grand scheme of things. And the best part is, this is all maintained by the user base itself! The more active they are, the more active those results will be!"

"It took a very long time before I started to earn people's trust and actually gain a user base...I strive my very best to make sure that I don't look at data that others would see as private. I know that there is a lot of data hosted on there that is sensitive to many players, and it's definitely not easy to earn their trust."

Icebluefire's integrity is evident from the way he continues to treat player privacy with paramount importance. He denies the existence of back doors which would enable him to obtain detailed analytics about Torn's users and maintains there's nothing he can do with Torn Stats that others cannot do for themselves. Icebluefire even ruled out the possibility of playing with the data for fun, which I suggested he could do by placing himself at number one in all categories just for a laugh.

"As fun as it would be [manipulating data], I haven't. I prefer accuracy over tricks. I have other little easter eggs laying across the site, but I've never thought about manipulating the data, even as a joke."

In spite of Icebluefire's honesty and transparency, there will always be some paranoid individuals who believe he holds some unfair advantage due to his ownership of Torn Stats. This is something Icebluefire firmly refutes, though, and he claims that the site has only helped him as much as it has helped others.

Nevertheless, I imagine this man is someone most factions would kill to have on their side - something Icebluefire's faction boss Z_Junior thankfully never had to do. Although if you think Icebluefire was brought into the JFK family for nothing more than his data analysis skills, you'd be wrong.

"All members of JFK contribute with something to the faction and Icey is no exception to that. He has made some nifty things that made life easier for a lot of players, not just JFK (Tornstats website for example) and that in a nutshell is what he's like - always trying to help people around him, not like many others that seek only to improve themselves. That quality exactly, rather than his skills with coding and data mining/processing is what I value the most." - Z_Junior

Icebluefire sees his membership of JFK as an honour, and as he closes in on his two-year anniversary with the faction on July 29th, it's fair to say he has no regrets over leaving Milk and Cookies. Not that this should be taken as an insult to MnC or indeed any of his previous factions, though, since Icebluefire seems to have left his previous factions amicably, and he's been well liked regardless of who he's affiliated himself with.

"The dedication of the players here [at JFK] are truly inspiring. Here, it's a team effort from everybody. We all play an important role with the faction and within our drive for success. It's been a great experience to be a member of such a powerful faction, and I'm just honored to be a part of it."

"I've made many friends everywhere I've gone, and I still have good connections with all the factions i've been a part of. I've never left a faction on bad terms or against my will...I don't mean for this to sound mighty, but I don't think I have many/any enemies."

It's true. Despite doing my best to dig up some dirt, I have yet to find a single person with anything bad to say about Icebluefire. Believe me, I really tried. I even told people he'd been selling their data to professional kitten stranglers and still, they praised him to high heaven. But surely there must be something wrong with him. He's a statistics nark so that probably makes him super boring, right?

Not according to his spouse of 572 days, Angel_Princess.

"Would you believe if I say he's extremely entertaining? And one of very few people in Torn that has the ability to get along with almost anyone. As far as being married to him in Torn, his statistical knowledge is just one of many qualities that makes him a great partner. He's easy going, humorous and a total game wiz! Which is great when we socialize with our friends, except for the part where he wins all the time."

"I love Tornstats. I've been using it for about 3 years. It's great to see how far he has taken Tornstats from then to now. And it also helps me to keep an eye on his stats don't get too far from me. I think everyone that have been in contact with him or Tornstats has benefited their torn play in one way or the other and I'm no exception to that."

Despite this glowing review and my personal failure to track down any enemies, Icebluefire insists that he has antagonised the odd person over the years. And while that is to be expected in a game like Torn, Icebluefire also believes his position in certain organisations is at least partly responsible.

"I've crossed paths before, and being where I'm at in the game, it can be difficult (JFK, Staff, Committee, the trifecta of evil), but I'm a forgive and forget kind of guy and typically don't hold grudges."

Indeed, as well as being the brains behind Torn Stats, Icebluefire has also helped to shape Torn through his position as an Officer and his work on the Committee. In regards to the former, Icebluefire has performed a vital role in what is a notoriously taxing job; dealing with player management issues on a daily basis, as well as investigating high profile federal cases.

And as for his involvement with the committee, Icebluefire was honest about his own shortcomings and those of his peers. In fact, his comments on how the committee works may prove eye opening to those who hold an unfairly low opinion of this clandestine group.

"I've been on the committee since the beginning of RESPO testing...some of the suggestions that go through there aren't really my area of expertise, and I take more of a backseat in those. I try my best to use my very long experience of playing Torn to help achieve the best results we can, even though it doesn't always work out perfectly, and there are occasionally some oversights that are simply unavoidable."

"There's been plenty that I don't agree with. It's my job as a committee member to object to decisions that feel like would have a negative impact on the future of the game. I think that because of this, not just from me but from everyone, that we've been able to refine ideas and come out with a much better product than was initially proposed."

Icebluefire's honesty is refreshing. The committee is certainly not perfect, nor would any of its members ever claim it to be. It is comprised of human beings with biases, opinions, emotions and loyalties just like any other organisation. But this does not mean that it is corrupt, as some might say. People are capable of voting against their own interests, just as they are capable of voting in their own favour too.

(Pictured: Your average committee member, apparently.)

Icebluefire is blatantly someone who many people trust to tell the truth. Otherwise, nobody would use Torn Stats. So if you believe him when he says he has not, can not and will not ever benefit from your information, you should probably pay heed to what he has to say on those rumours of corruption within the committee.

"I believe it's all just speculation. Seeing the discussions that happen within the committee, there's a lot of argument back and forth over proposed changes. Obviously, some changes are going to affect some players more than others, and because of this, I believe it leads people to believing that there's a biased opinion. I, personally, have argued for and against changes that have benefited me and I believe that we all truly do have the game's best interest at heart."

The altruistic attitude of which Icebluefire speaks was made evident further when I asked about his current faction's dominance over Torn. I am currently talking to several notable Torn players for future Tornographies, many of whom hold the view that JFK enjoys an unhealthy advantage compared to their rivals. I asked Icebluefire if he thought this was true, and he responded with candour.

"I can understand where they're coming from, but the truth of the matter is, if it's not JFK, it'll be someone else. What happens if/when JFK disappears? There will be a new top dog that will be deemed as out of control. I'm all for competition, and I would love to see a closer group at the top, but in a game like this, I don't know if that's possible."

"On the other side, I don't think JFK is as out of touch as people believe them to be. They're definitely beatable, and have their weak points. But JFK has one advantage that most people don't realise: They win the battle before the battle even begins. People tend to go into the war with a defeatist attitude and expecting to lose already, which puts them at a huge disadvantage right from the start. It's all about morale."

You wouldn't find many willing to admit their faction isn't as strong as others make out. And nor would you find many Torn players whose integrity allows them to be a member of JFK, the Committee and an Officer without having mud slung at them on a daily basis. But somehow, Icebluefire manages it. And while this Teflon reputation has much to do with his character, it is further enhanced by the sheer amount of time Icebluefire has dedicated to Torn City life.

This guy has been here since the very beginning, arriving in Torn nearly thirteen years ago on Friday September 17th 2004. In that time he's reached Level 91, hit rank 24 Elite, earned over $109billion and acquired 3102 karma in the process. According to Proxima's estimates, he currently ranks around the mid 160's regarding battle stats. And of all the goals Icebluefire has, it is an improvement in this area which he strives for the most.

"I'm sitting around 1b behind the top 100. So if they could all just quit for a year, that'd be great! Another goal of mine is to reach financial stability to not feel guilty for taking an SE a day or so. However, that's an even bigger goal than the battle stats goal I think. It's a tall feat. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a unique and lasting impression on Torn. I don't want to be famous, but I want to feel like I gave something back to the community that gave me so much."

Hold on a moment. Icebluefire says he wants to reach financial stability, yet he's currently worth $109 billion. Okay, I can understand that given the price of SE's. But the second goal he mentions is downright crazy. He wants to feel like he's given something back, despite already serving as an Officer, a Committee member and having provided the most useful data analysis tool in Torn City's history? If Icebluefire hasn't given enough to the community already, then who has?

Clearly, this is a man with a deep passion for Torn that is matched only by his burning ambition. And in this respect at least, Icebluefire is well aware of just how much he has pushed himself.

"I've been around this game for so long, my ambitions and play styles have changed a countless amount of times over the last decade. When I originally started, all the best players were within arms reach of me, but I was young and couldn't give it the dedication necessary to keep up. Over time, I learned to just grow at my own pace and do the best I could given the resources I had to work with."

"These days, I simply strive to be the best player that I can be. A clear example of my initial ambitions was when the Hall of Fame initially came out. At the time, I was outside the top 500 in battle stats, so my goal was simple to break that barrier. Since then, I've worked my way into the top 200 in battle stats. I would say now, that I could quit happily if I ever reached the top 100 in battle stats, just to say I accomplished something."

It's obvious to everyone else that Icebluefire has accomplished much more something. While many are content to focus solely on boosting their own stats, he has given equal thought towards improving the experience of others.

"I strive my best to be as helpful a player as possible while continuing to improve my own game play to be the best player I possibly can be. Ultimately though, to be consistently active and interested in this game, you constantly need to be achieving and setting new goals for yourself, or you'll get bored and you'll stop logging in."

"On the other side, those goals need to be realistic goals or the opposite happens and you give up out of frustration. Everyone wants to be the best, and expects to be able to compete with the best in the game. The truth of the matter is, you just need to play your own game. Play at your own pace and set realistic goals. If you work hard enough, you'll be making an impact in Torn in no time."

Communities like Torn rely on people like Icebluefire as much as those who are behind the scenes coding, coordinating and creating. Without players taking their own personal time to add guides, develop tools, form competitions and find new ways of playing, this place would not be as fun and unique as it is. Icebluefire's commitment and expertise have helped many players achieve more than they ordinarily would have, and for this, all of Torn should thank him. For it is not as if he has nothing else to do.

"I'm the father of an amazing 5-year-old son, while working as a web developer. I live in a rural area, which allows me to get out and enjoy nature around me. I love to go for walks through parks and just take in the scenery, and spend time out by the lake at my cabin."

And yet with all that lovely nature and the trials of fatherhood to occupy him, Icebluefire still finds the time to build tools for the benefit of Torn. His ambition forces him to make space for this world, and we are all the better for it. Icebluefire told me that it is fear of competition which drives him to continue improving his Torn Stats website, with Wolverine's Torn Info providing the kind of challenge he needs to maintain his levels of enthusiasm. But even if he had no rivals, it seems Icebluefire would invent one just to keep himself going.

"I have to believe there's competition out there, even if I don't know about it. It's that fear of not being the best that drives me to continue to develop new tools and continue to captivate more Torn players."

To this end, Icebluefire has plenty of ideas ready to improve Torn Stats. And while he isn't working on anything specifically at this moment, he says there is no limit to the things he'd like to do with his site in future.

"My list is a mile long of changes or updates I'd love to be able to do eventually. With increasing competition, I'm not sure I'm ready to discuss what new features I may have in store for Torn Stats. All I can say is, there are some that I'm really excited about."
