Torn's Level Best

Josephine [1923258]
The Hall of Fame: the place we go to when we want to compare our progress to other players, or when we've misclicked trying to find the forums. The HoF stands as a compendium of rankings and information available to any who care to seek them. Thanks to its existence, you can see your networth dropping, monitor how your attacks stack up to others and stare angrily at the thirty inactive level 12's above you that have undoubtedly better work stats.

But is there more to the Hall of Fame than a mere record of player statistics? Does this vast repository of information possess any secrets, any intriguing insights, any titbits of interest which most players would never even notice? Why yes, it does.

The first category that greets us upon opening this page is the Level Hall of Fame. Originally, players of equal level were listed according to their ID, but this changed when Stylin posted this Bug Report, expressing his discontent at being kicked off the first page. From this moment on, the HoF order was dependent on experience, but this change also brought forth many opportunities for the information within the HoF to be used.

Now, active people don't have to worry about falling in their HoF ranking just because an older player levelled. Anyone wishing to know how close they are to the next level can guess based on how high or low they are compared to their peers. Also, level holders are ranked amongst themselves and sit at the top of each level. And with this, comes a question:

If everyone in a level is ranked by their experience, wouldn't it mean someone must also be ranked the highest of each?

Someone out there could be statistically proven to be the best of each level, or at least the most experienced. If that was you, wouldn't you want to know? I know I would, so to find out who indeed was the best of every level, I endured months of occasional clicking and note-taking. Unfortunately, given the live nature of the HoF rankings, some of the names and values changed during the process. Therefore, the data I present to you must only be considered accurate as of September 14, 2017. With that caveat in place, I now present my study of these so-called Number Ones, and the results should prove rather interesting even to those whose names do not appear.

So long as you like numbers, that is.

As one would expect, Bodybagger is the highest ranked of the level 100s. However, the strongest player of the game wasn't always the highest ranked. For a while, DrGonzo of JFK stood in first place, before being pushed back down to #2. This fact exposes an interesting quirk of the level HoF; if someone is ranked best of their level, but they aren't the strongest, that person could take the position one day and lose it the next.

Take the case of Shoogs for example. With over twenty-seven thousand defends won, fourth most in Torn, Shoogs stands ranked as the highest of all level 1's. But according to notes taken on April 15, 2017, that spot was previously held by a lesser known player called SiGagah. Both players are currently inactive - Shoogs passed SiGagah in experience at some point between April and August 2017, which implies the rankings respond to experience earned regardless of activity.

SiGagah's drop makes sense when considering the defends Shoogs has earned. Despite his last action being over 400 days ago at the time of publication, Shoogs is still bountied continuously; as a level 1 holder he is prime bait for innocent noobs who fall for him, steadily increasing his defends won count.

Upon deeper investigation, SiGagah still seems to surpass Shoogs in many aspects. Bearing the rank of #12 Veteran while Shoogs is #11 Highly Competent, SiGagah has thirty-eight more awards than Shoogs, as well as over four-thousand more attacks won and nine-thousand more respect gained. With almost five-hundred Vicodin taken and 1,000+ days donator status, it seems as though SiGagah was a formidable holder in her prime, despite being branded a Loser thanks to her 665 attacks lost.

SiGagah's thirty-two days' worth of play time compared to Shoogs' seven seems to validate this, despite the lack of any identifying clues on her profile as to who she could have been before inactivity. At first glance, it seems unlikely that Shoogs is stronger than SiGagah, despite him now being ranked above her. However, a quick look at their spy reports helps us uncover the truth.

As you can see, SiGagah's stats are far lower than Shoogs'. Since both players in question are inactive, it is impossible for stat changes to have influenced SiGagah's fall to #2. These results also demonstrate how neither player is particularly strong by any standards, but their stats are nevertheless enough to defeat the average low-level player. The case of SiGagah and Shoogs exposes the volatility of these HoF rankings, as it shows how attacks can be enough to surpass or at least hold rank above someone with far higher stats, as well as how defends may be a slow but steady way up on experience.

My research indicates that the highest ranked player of each level in the HoF is often a holder. Yet in some cases, the person in question is long inactive, which can make it hard to determine whether they were holding or just have the closest amount of experience to the next level. This is especially true at the highest of levels, notably with Ch0ppy of JFR at 78, Gronk of JFK at 91, and --Jobo-- at 99, who have all been inactive for a considerable period of time.

Did these players stop levelling before or after they went inactive? It would be somewhat strange for people of such a high level to stop then, especially in the case of --Jobo--, unless they decided to focus on stats before levelling. That being said, it is rumored that there are several level 97 holders, with the highest level 97, David of JUX HQ, confirming that he is one of them.

Many of Torn's Number Ones are also holding bizarre and interesting records in addition to their level. One of the most notable is zaney from TempAgency, who holds the position of the highest ranked level 65. With 7,864 Xanax taken, he is currently their biggest user in Torn according to Tornstats' playergraphs, while he also stands at #63 in stats according to the Top 100 Stats Thread by Proxima.

Something that begged to be mentioned was the one married couple who both held a #1 position in a different level HoF; the highest ranked level 41, Venko of Blodigrove, and his spouse Mony of level 45. A month after I noted this Mony lost her status to Mega_Mindy of PT-Calculated, which was interesting in itself, as Mega_Mindy was previously listed as #1 of level 44. To verify what happened, a response from Mega_Mindy was sought.

Her place as the highest of the 44's is now occupied by dut of Itsi Bitsi Bikini. Next up is a look at biNjAi of level 3, who like SiGagah seems to have been quite the player for his level, with over three thousand attacks won and nine thousand respect gained. At 163 awards, biNjAi has the highest award count and rank (#14 Highly distinguished) of any #1 in HoFs below level 15. For someone below level 15, biNjAi's drug use was also surprisingly high, which is startling given his inability to fly to Switzerland to rehabilitate.

biNjAi aso has a decent crime record, with over seven thousand auto thefts and nine thousand arsons. As with SiGagah, there are few clues as to what kind of player biNjAi was prior to inactivity, and this just shows how difficult it is to analyze the HoFs below level 15. Since travelling is unlocked at level 15, few people intentionally hold below this point, leaving those #1's like a needle in a haystack among inactives who never had the experience to level. To say the HoF pages down there are gruelling to search through would be an understatement, although there is the consolation of finding a rather peculiar sight every now and then.

The real question here is whether they're ranked higher than all 9's or lower than all 10's.

The average age of a #1 level in any HoF is approximately 3,305 days. The oldest among them is bounty_hunt of level 77, a member of We didn't start the fire. As far as the youngest is concerned, the pages of the levels below 15 seem to have provided a perfect niche for young holders to achieve a #1 spot they'd have been unlikely to reach in a higher level. Rheahero of Torn Medical stands as the youngest #1, holding the highest rank of the level 13's while being barely two years old. The second youngest is the factionless Reamus of level 7, who has topped his level group at the tender age of 930.

Beyond those two examples, the rest of the sub-15 levels are shrouded in inactivity. Fana89 of level 14, SpankyTheElf of level 12, Shauna of level 10, and J_Force of level 8 all hold the title of Deserter, despite still ranking as the highest of their respective levels. The remaining unnamed #1's comprise of CandyPants at 11, Arcueid at 9, Tilted at 6, avatar1234 at 5, and aspalela at 2; with the first three being the only ones to remain veritably active.

Although long gone, messages remain on the profile signatures of Shauna and aspalela, acting as a testament to the fact that such players were fully aware of what they were.

Another piece of interesting information I've noted is the most common rank of these #1's, as in their actual ranks based on triggers of networth, crimes, and the like. As you can see from the graph below - one which has refused to sort itself in numerical order - #23 Heroic comes out top, with #22 Champion and #24 Legendary joint second.

The majority of those at the top of their level have not achieved the highest possible rank available to them. For example, Turon1 of Corleone Crime Family lingers foremost among the level 15's ranked at #19 Celebrity, but fellow level 15 Pingu4ever of JFK 2.1 has the maximum rank achievable to them, #21 Idolised.

Overall, the #1's who have achieved the maximum rank possible for their level are BodyBagger at 100, --Jobo-- at 99, David at 97, Sacster of Italy at 96, -spacebird of Habitat at 95, Argh of Ðestructive Anomaly at 94, Gronk at 91, BigNemesis of Karma Chameleons at 90, Butters of LONDON at 85, Leaf_Bikini of Itsi Bitsi Bikini at 75, Horica of 39th Street Killers at 71, Paige of JFK at 61, Mega_Mindy at 45, DeaLer of Milk and Cookies at 40, and GOLDWING_UK of FITZ FAMILY at 20.

On to another subject; awards. The average amount of awards among those who top their level is 270, although most low-level leaders cannot hope to get anywhere near this number. BodyBagger has the highest number at 421, followed by megalomaniacal of Nub Navy with 409 awards at level 80. The level 8 J_Force has the lowest awards total of any #1 by far, having achieved only 17, which is barely half the amount of the second least, SpankyTheElf, 32.

One of the most surprising observations I've made is that despite what one might assume, not all #1's belong to a well-known or HoF faction. If related factions are included, Itsi Bitsi Bikini and Destructive Anomaly hold the most at five each. The former contains dk1234 (level 76), Leaf_Bikini (level 75), dut (level 44), Griffon4 (level 31), and Kimber7 (level 18), while the latter contains Argh (level 94), D3ATH- (level 66), MY_NAME_IS_TORN (level 63), INXTINCT (level 33), and JoesMum (level 23).

Following them, with four #1's each, stand Milk and Cookies and their related factions, with Bezee (level 79), duckroid (level 56), DeaLer (level 40), and -FC- (level 39). Also on four are the JFx factions, with Izzanods (level 98), Gronk (level 91), Ch0ppy (level 78), and Paige (level 61). With Divalicious (level 82), Horica (level 71), and FIN (level 50), 39th Street Killers and their related factions have three #1's. The same number is present in PT, who have Mega_Mindy (level 45), Shuu (level 22), and Broly (level 16). Subversive Alliance's own trio of level toppers consists of mellamo_sue (level 51), Saucy_Jack (level 21), and James85 (level 19).

From then on, the concentration among major factions lessens. Shampoo (level 93) and Foggy (level 84) of Forged Through War each hold the #1 title on their levels. JFB has Timoteo32 (level 58) and Kali (level 52). BigNemesis (level 90) and LovelyLadyLana (level 62) are both members of Karma Chameleons. Butters (level 85) and Yee13 (level 35) from LONDON each dominate their respective HoFs. Other factions containing two members who are #1 of a HoF include SPECTRE - Recruiting, which houses _TB (level 88) and Trole (level 26), and The Black Pearl, which includes Enzotic (level 48) and hackertracker (level 25).

The remaining level champions are either the sole #1's of their faction or factionless altogether. All in all, it appears that over 60% of level toppers are unrelated to well-known, or so-called HoF, factions.

At this point, despite the plethora of information we've poured through, there are a few level leaders that are still yet to be mentioned. To avoid anyone feeling left out, let's list those people now. -KC (level 92), Blindside (level 89), Lord_Mchammer68 of The House of Retribution (level 87), BettyBoop (level 86), Frank_Underwood of Helvetes in Vegas (level 83), DrDeath of WeeD (level 81), drytorch of Yakuza - Infinity (level 74), Buuwack of Desert HeaT (level 73), gocool of NewSMTH Flying (level 72), badger1965 of Nuclear Blast (level 70), superglen of Pornstars (level 69), Belkas of FMfB (level 68), OneBigDummy (level 67), clayton_bigsby of GDZ (level 64), InFamous of The Hero (level 60), VenomImoneV of PIHB (level 59), barcode of Savage Plague (level 57), johnnyfireball of Devils 'n' Angels (level 55), Azalus (level 54), bekuletz (level 53), Dogballs of HOUNDS (level 49), Speedball of Lex Talionis (level 47), Lonium of DropBears (level 46), Madman200 of Immortal Droogs (level 43), LouCypher of Naughty (level 42), Old_Lady of Crony Colony (level 38), ChainingBeast of The Drunk Tank (level 37), Hans of Ravage (level 36), Syzslak (level 34), strange2 (level 32), sXe of Thrasher (level 30), trickbase of Lawless (level 29), Man_In_A_Box (level 28), thehass of Seven (level 27), ryan_mc44567 (level 24), and Marijus_ (level 17).

Relevant.

With those remaining names listed, this concludes my research on the highest ranked people of each level. This search was mainly driven by a burning curiosity, with no intent to call out anyone on the list for any reason. Achieving a #1 spot in any level HoF is an impressive feat and those who hold said titles should be proud of what they have done. It is this type of research that fuels the quantities of trivia-esque knowledge available, and the satisfaction I feel upon its completion is enormous.
