Legendary Racers Miss Out on URT

Dunmugmeh, Guy_Smiley and Broly fail to qualify for high profile tournament. Group stages prove tighter than expected as final round looms large.
The World Cup may be distracting the rest of the planet right now, but in Torn City, there's only one competition anyone gives a single shiny shit about. I am of course talking about the Ultimate Racing Tournament, and so far, it has not disappointed in terms of drama, with several high profile names having failed to make it through to the tournament's group stage.

Rogue, aka Roguehomer, was the first driver to qualify courtesy of his victory in Qualifier 1 at Mudpit, as the veteran racer looks to build upon the fourth and sixth-place finishes he achieved in the 2017 PRC Summer and Winter editions. Second place in Qualifier 1 went to Chiubiz, with third secured by Tinzu ahead of experienced drivers Hammer and ChristmasBazaar. The final qualifier was Lord_Gorgen, with the racers placed third to sixth separated by just 57 milliseconds in a finale so tense I had to change myself several times. Someone else who may have soiled themselves was Garfthegreat, a notable casualty in this race, as the racing stalwart and PRC co-organiser tragically crashed out on lap 18.

The second qualifier took place at the Docks and saw 2017 Summer PRC champion Stormcast secure his place in the tournament, keeping alive his hopes of grabbing a second Bugatti like a big greedy boy. Second place in Q2 was taken by the 2017 Winter PRC bronze medallist Nath, who finished a full six seconds behind his rival despite both men taking to the track in a Ford GT40 - accusations that Stormcast added some sweet speed holes to his car with a pickaxe were later disproven. CarlosJ took third place in Q2, finishing in front of a tight group comprised of Viktoriya in fourth, Mercm3 in fifth and LumbricuS in sixth.

Tournament steward Mafia was the standout racer of Qualifier 3, finishing five fat seconds ahead of second placed urbanmenaceMiro qualified in third two and a half seconds behind, with RazzyD, NickHendrix and the_gunners2004 slipping into the remaining qualifying spots during a thrilling race on the Industrial track. Interestingly, this was the first URT qualifier thus far in which no cars failed to complete the course, with all 100 drivers returning to the paddock in one piece.

Next up was Qualifier 4 at Parkland, and after multiple attempts, the highest ranked driver in Torn, Data, finally secured qualification by virtue of his fourth-place finish. NNWS was the winner of Q4 ahead of Fear in second and Archimede in third. Two seconds after Data in fourth came Tyrion and Lindy_Lyson in fifth respectively, with the pair crossing the line just sixteen-hundredths of a second apart, edging out race organiser GeorgeCostanza by just under four seconds.

The fragrant surroundings of the Sewage works were the location for the penultimate qualifying round, with Q5 witnessing a stunning performance by Baldr to finish nearly six seconds ahead of the chasing pack. uLtraZ took second in front of kamas in third and Violence in fourth. 2017's Summer PRC third-place finisher ToxicMonkeyMZC was relieved to nab fifth-place in this qualifier, with Somebody taking the sixth qualifying spot just 16 milliseconds ahead of Night Racers chief Guy_Smiley.

And so we came to the final qualifier. Q6 was the last chance for a myriad of famous names to avoid missing out on this prestigious new tournament, but the fierce competition proved too much for many, with a number of high profile racers failing to qualify for the URT group stage. Rockem secured first position thanks to a massive 19-second gap between himself and Black_Dragon. ShuKa finished just under three seconds behind in third place, with a pack consisting of Fr0sty, JIMMYYO and kLz_BloodMoney taking the final qualifying spots as part of a pack which finished twelve seconds behind.

As a result, the likes of Kaxuxo, TriTuRaDor, Navin, David, Ali_Looya, Garfthegreat, Miros and Caladan all failed to qualify. Dilandu was another notable absentee, with his best finish being eighths place in qualifier 2. Guy_Smiley's best effort was seventh in Q5, and 2017 PRC Summer finalist dunmugmeh could only manage eleventh in Qualifier 4. Likewise, race organiser GeorgeCostanza was unable to improve on his seventh place in Q4, and he will have to be content with looking on from afar as he runs the tournament as a spectator.

Such was the popularity of the URT that some famous drivers failed to secure a place in the qualifying heats at all. Winter PRC Champion Broly failed to make it out of the sole qualifier he was able to enter, with the rest being full to the brim before he could even join.

"I'm from the Western part of NA whereas George is from the East, hence he used to set up race on around 5am my time. I even set up alarm just so I could join, but nope - crazy turnout! Even after George made the race exclusive for A class - it was still packed because first couple of qualifiers it was all class, hence 90% of the A class racers missed those favorable tracks."

"There have been reports of lower DS/Racing Class drivers selling their racing spot to the highest bidder. crazy! All in all, even tho due to crazy amount of participants I was not able to take my 2nd shot at the Bugatti, it absolutely makes me happy that the Racing community is back in business!"

Another driver who was notable by his absence was ScHiZoPhReNiC, who had no idea the tournament was even on in the first place. But enough about those who aren't taking part, let's focus on those who will now battle it out for the chance to win a Bugatti Veyron. With the qualifying drivers confirmed, a glamorous draw held in GeorgeCostanza's spare room resulted in the following groups being drawn.

Based on driver skill we can see that groups one and four are the groups of death, with average ratings of 37.1 and 37.6 respectively. Group six is by far the weakest group with an average of just 21.5 DS. Group two seems the most disparate too, consisting of three sub 14 drivers and three with ratings over 39. Here are the driver skill rankings for those who qualified for the Ultimate Racing Tournament.

At the time of writing the tournament has already seen three of the four group stage races take place. With several drivers level on points, we should like to point out that the deciding factor between racers with identical totals will be the number of races won. If this figure is also identical then the drivers' cumulative times over all four races will be calculated, and those with the lowest time overall will progress.

In group one Mafia secured qualification in yesterday's Vector race, with his first victory coming off the back of second place finishes at Uptown and Hammerhead. Baldr needs just a point to confirm his qualification in today's race at Underdog, with a victory in Uptown and a third place at Hammerhead followed by a second-place finish at Vector. Rogue, Rockem and NNWS are now out of the tournament, with Stormcast requiring a victory while also relying on Baldr to finish outside of the points if he is to stand any chance of doubling his Bugatti collection.

Group two sees five racers still in contention for qualification to the knockout stage, with only Urbanmenace mathematically unable to progress. A win for either Chiubiz, Fear or Nath will guarantee progression. Chiubiz or Fear could also secure second and progress to the next round, but if Nath were to collect just two points he would have to rely on his cumulative time score to see him through, while also hoping Chiubiz and Fear either fail to score or get distracted by a small baby bird at the side of the tracks. This is also the only way uLtraZ and Black_Dragon can qualify, as the pair require both a victory and the failure of Fear or Chiubiz to score points, while also hoping that Nath scores two points or fewer than themselves.

Group three was blown wide open last night by the failure of Miro to turn up for his race at Vector. CarlosJ took the opening victory at Uptown and Miro then won at Hammerhead, but both men have now been passed thanks to their failure to score points in any other race. Archimede leads the way after his victory at Vector yesterday, and he is followed by ShuKa who has two second-place finishes to his name. Any one of the top five could still qualify or drop out of the qualification places, though, with only Tinzu unable to reach the next round having failed to score points in every race so far. It should also be noted that I, Sugarvalves, participated in the previous Vector race as a steward. My Classic Mini crashed out on lap three. The only thing more bruised than my ego is my pelvis. I will never make love the same way again.

The tournament's top-ranked driver failed to secure his place in the last twelve yesterday, with Data surprisingly finishing outside of the points for the first time at Vector. Violence was the winner at last night's Group 3 race, with Razzy D and Hammer following in second and third. Viktoriya will be disappointed to miss out on points for the second consecutive race, and she must surely aim for victory in her final race having failed to build on that opening day win at Uptown. RazzyD also faces an uphill task to qualify, and he sits below Viktoriya by virtue of his opponent's single race win. Hammer requires a win, a pointless finish from Data or Violence and the maintenance of a better CT score than anyone else who finishes on five points if he is to overturn a three-point deficit between himself and the qualification spots. Fr0sty exits the competition after his third successive race without a point.

Tyrion qualified for the Semi-Finals in style last night, romping home to victory ahead of Christmasbazaar and JIMMYYO in the round three race at Vector. This means Tyrion cannot now be caught by anyone other than CB, who himself must hope to fend off the attentions of ToxicMonkeyMZC in the final race at Underdog. A point may be enough for CB if ToxicMonkey wins and his Cumulative Time proves higher, but second place is the minimum required to guarantee his qualification either way. Both ToxicMonkeyMZC and NickHendrix have to win their final race to stand any chance of progression, with both drivers having to hope that other results go their way too. The competition's lowest-ranked driver Mercm3 sadly exits the URT with one race remaining, although one hopes they'll still turn up to today's event out of respect for their fellow racers.

Group six has seen the most dominant performance by any one racer across the entire tournament, with  Lindy_Lyson having won every one of her races by a margin of over five seconds. Lindy, who is ranked 14th in the competition, will surely hope to make it a clean sweep come today's race at Vector. If she does, then whoever finishes in second place will qualify alongside her. The only exception to this is kLz_BloodMoney, who would also need to have a lower CT than whoever finishes in third position in today's race. LumbricuS, the second highest-ranked driver in the competition, currently stands in second position for no reason other than that's where I put him in the spreadsheet. Each of the four drivers on two points is equal at present, with their cumulative times only determined should it be required - let's hope it isn't, it looks like a right f***ing faff.

So those are the standings after three of our four races. If you'd like to watch the final round of action in the URT group stage check out the links found in this forum post here. Following the final round, the URT Semi-Finals will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by the grand final on Saturday 23rd of June. Before that, non-qualified drivers are invited to participate in the Sunday Driver event, which oddly takes place on Friday, where 100 participants will compete to finish last in order to win a Class 3 Audi and a special prize from Duke.
