Event Days in Torn

When is the next event day? What do they all do? And how should you prepare for them to make the most of their bonuses?
Bonus event days are a relatively new feature in Torn, with the first having taken place on Valentine's Day this year. Since then we have seen various others occur on a monthly basis, marking everything from important awareness campaigns like World Blood Donor Day, through to more entertaining occasions such as 420 day. But when is the next one? Where can I find a list of all the event days? And what can you do to make the most of each and every event?

The answer to the first question will come later in this article. The answer to the second question is the forthcoming Calendar feature, which we've given you a preview of above, and which should be out next year. The answer to the third question is slightly longer, since event days are varied in the bonuses that they offer.

First, let's explain precisely what these days entail. Regardless of theme, their one common factor is that each event sees an aspect of the game modified and buffed, often for 24 hours, but occasionally longer. Alternatively, a new item may be released, one which is far more potent than others currently available, or which does something no other item can do by itself.

Thus, it is no surprise that certain activities are indulged heavily on these particular days. For example, on the 20th of April, the nerve effects of Cannabis are tripled, but so are your chances of an overdose - which usually stands at 0.018%. This heightened threat of whiting out may not seem beneficial for most, but the prospect of a quicker overdose is a welcome boost to those chasing the Cannabis OD merit.

Another event which sees citizens change up their routines is the aforementioned World Blood Donor Day. On June 14th, citizens are often found lying passively at home, extracting all the red liquid they can to produce as many blood bags as possible. Since the cooldown and life penalties are both temporarily halved for doing this, merit hunters are out in force again on this day, with many looking to obtain the rare Anaemic honour given to those who have filled 1,000 blood bags.

However, the effects of this event are more complex than an uptick in the number of people suddenly discovering they have haemophilia. For a start, the hospital was seen to be less populated on this day, since everyone had too little life to fight each other. June 14th therefore represents a bad day to try and earn money through revives, but a very good day to start a territory war against a faction whose members are all busy drawing blood.

Moreover, the most interesting impact World Blood Day had upon Torn was the way it affected blood bag prices. You would expect that the cost of blood bags would fall drastically in the days after the event, due to the sudden increase in their availability. What actually happened was that various types were affected differently, with no clear trend present, and many fluctuations occurred much earlier than expected, on the day the bonus was revealed.

We tracked the various prices and circulation figures from the 11th, the day the newspaper announced the event, through to the 15th, the day after the event. We found that AB+, compatible with no other blood types, saw its price rise by $4,000, despite a 1,700 increase in stock. A+ and B+, both also compatible with AB+, each slid by around $1,300 in price, which one would expect from a boost in circulation by 20,000 and 4,000 respectively.

Less predictable were bloods compatible with themselves and three other types. As expected, O+ lost $1,000 due to 20,000 more packs being available. However, A- and B- gained $600 and $1,200 in value, despite 4,000 and 1,500 increases to circulation. O- behaved more sensibly, losing $5,000 in value after gaining 4,200 in circulation. Empty Blood Bags also adhered to the laws of supply and demand, gaining $4,000 in value when over 60,000 were used up on June 14th.

Not all items are this unpredictable. Cannabis understandably spiked to three times its normal price on 420. The same thing happened to Business Class Tickets when World Tourism Day was announced, although their value fell drastically soon after, when an error with the bonus saw thousands of BCTs given out as compensation.

Savvy traders and opportunists should therefore take note of these examples when planning ahead. Those who read the situation correctly are almost guaranteed to turn a profit* but those who are caught out stand to lose millions.

While most of the special days mentioned so far are beneficial to individuals, some require coordination between groups to extract the most from them. Chief of these is perhaps Valentine's Day, when consumption of the drug Love Juice reduces the energy required for an attack by three fifths, while also greatly increasing your combat stats. On this day, faction chains stretching for tens of thousands can be achieved in record speed, and this has certainly drawn the attention of Subversive Alliance Leader

"Valentine's Day will likely be a major blood bath in Torn. Many people in SA have already expressed a lot of interest in going for a nice long chain. We are really hoping that 50k will be released by then!"

There are also a few other special days that could be boosted further through the help of factions and companies. For instance, Beer Day, on the first Friday of August, increases the nerve granted by beer by as much as five times, but if your faction has booster cooldown upgrades set to maximum, you'll be able to drink 3x more alcohol! With the right combination of an event day and specials, you could potentially gain fifteen times as much nerve as you normally would.

Another instance where strategy might be employed is Employee Appreciation Day, held on the first Friday of every March. Though normal and rational people would suggest it'd be fair to split the train gains for everyone, with enough persuasion, bribery, and possibly threats or intimidation, it isn't hard to force your employer to use all their trains on you!

Right, now that we've made you read over 1,000 words on special event days, here's the moment you've all been waiting for. The next bonus day will be on Wednesday 14th of November and will involve candy. The exact details will be released in a newspaper article to be published on the 12th. All event days are announced via the newspaper or Torn Facebook, so if you hear of them anywhere else, check those places first.
