Tags Comp Hots Up Amid Final Flurry

Top 25 scores revealed. Current top 10% figure also released. Accusations made of top players being 'spoonfed tags'.
The 2018 Dog Tags competition is now just five days away from its conclusion, and things have really begun to spice up as we enter the final stretch, with two of the reported frontrunners seen trading accusations and insults as if they were cheap plushies.

But before we get into the handbags, let's first take a look at the cold hard numbers. The current minimum score required to place in the top 10% of all players is 783. If things stayed the same until Sunday, a score of 783 or higher would therefore net you ten tokens. However, one week ago this figure was 683, which leads me to estimate that players will need between 850 and 875 points to achieve this feat if current trends continue.

Whether they do so depends on the tag collecting rate, which admittedly seems to have slowed during the latter part of the competition. There have been 377,024 tags stolen so far, compared to 262,567 on the 13th of November. In the first nine days of the event an average of 29,174 tags were being taken per day, compared to just 16,351 in the past seven days. It may, therefore, transpire that the 10% estimate in our previous paragraph will turn out to be complete and utter botty water.

Much clearer is the outlook for the top ten, where the placings have been shaken up harder than a baby in the care of a British nanny. Since we announced the leading scores last week, the most significant change has been seen at the front of the pack. First and second have swapped places and are now seemingly battling it out for the title between themselves, with less than 1,000 points between the pair, but a huge margin of 12,883 separating them from the chasing pack.

Our current third-placed player was sixth last week and is followed in fourth by last week's fifth. This week's fifth was last week third, our current sixth was fourth, and in seventh is Alexstrasza, who said I could reveal his placing after he correctly predicted he was ninth in last week's standings. Still with me? Great. New entrants into the top ten currently sit in eighth and ninth place, with last week's tenth still tenth at the time of writing.

Here is the anonymous top ten table of taggers so far, which was correct as of breakfast this morning.

1st - 903 tags - 26,053 points
2nd - 1,047 tags - 25,128 points
3rd - 712 tags - 12,245 points
4th - 699 tags - 11,991 points
5th - 458 tags - 11,973 points
6th - 552 tags - 11,950 points
7th - 417 tags - 11,310 points
8th - 660 tags - 10,379 points
9th - 495 tags - 9,210 points
10th - 451 tags - 9,078 points

Beyond that, less than 1,000 points separate 10th from 15th, but a gap of more than 2,000 points exists between 15th and 20th. The remaining top 25 are just a few hundred points behind that, with 5,735 points the current cut off if you are looking to receive the illustrious Metal Tag item.

11th - 518 tags - 9,036 points
12th - 455 tags - 8,961 points
13th - 369 tags - 8,780 points
14th - 222 tags - 8,410 points
15th - 318 tags - 8,118 points
16th - 364 tags - 7,608 points
17th - 368 tags - 6,669 points
18th - 437 tags - 6,353 points
19th - 592 tags - 6,348 points
20th - 335 tags - 6,000 points
21st - 221 tags - 5,924 points
22nd - 348 tags - 5,826 points
23rd - 174 tags - 5,763 points
24th - 223 tags - 5,752 points
25th - 224 tags - 5,735 points

Alexstrasza aside, speculation continues to grow as to which players are fighting it out for the dog tag title. Td3h seemingly let the cat out of the bag in a forum post last Tuesday, when he accused Shuka of leading the competition and, amongst other things, having tags spoon-fed to him by former champion Kniv - an accusation backed up by Hildegarde.

I cannot confirm whether Shuka is or ever was in the lead of the tags competition, nor whether he enjoys being fed like a little baby boy, but I can tell you that he denies Td3h's accusations in full.

"For the record I hold most respect for kniv 3 beat, man I borrowed few pages of his textbook, but there is absolutely no correlation between us. Never interacted with kniv...period."

Many have wondered why our triple tag champion elected to avoid this year's event. Is he bored? Does he have something better to do? Is he cheating on us with another game? Based on what we've heard so far, it doesn't seem unreasonable to presume that Kniv may have decided to mentor Shuka in return for a fee. Kniv's response to this suggestion was as coy as a koi carp, to say the least.

Far from receiving help from Kniv, Shuka claims that he's been on the receiving end of some distinctly Knivesque tactics, as he made a series of counter-accusations towards Hildegarde - his purported rival for top spot.

"Credit where credit is due, shout out to my company director for turning down hildegarde offer to kick me out, nice burn. Btw that's another kniv antic, maybe kniv not competing but his tactics are very well still in play. Also I like to congratulate hildegarde on a well bought campain, buying is not actually competing, while players competed he went to auction."

Shuka went on to blame this newspaper's publication of the top ten scores for hindering his chances of outright victory, while also commenting that he felt unable to hold off Hildegarde's challenge due to the money and support his rival enjoys. Once more, I cannot confirm whether Hildegarde is or was in first place, second place, or sixty-first place. However, it does seem that Hildegarde has indeed been buying tags, if Td3h is to be believed.

"All the help I've given him is selling a few of my tags...My problem with Shuka is that he is a whiny bi**h. I hit him twice and got messaged by his faction leader immediately after. Since that annoyed me I stepped my game up a notch and watched him closely. After I hit him again he accused me of cheating. Needless to say, I don't take those accusations lightly and decided to make his competition miserably from now on."

Hildegarde didn't deny this when confronted in the forums, merely claiming that a little help is normal, whereas Shuka is being "spoonfed 100%". In a brief interview, Hildegarde said his hands were tied since Shuka "cried to his leadership", but maintains that he will still beat his rival, opining that "he's garbage and the final score will show."

Indeed it will. The 2018 Dog Tag competition officially ends at 5pm TCT on 25th of November.
