How lower level players can farm tags efficiently; an interview with a ninja tag collector who is flying well under the radar.
With this year's Dog Tag event in full swing, many players are currently battling it out by taking tags from other active players. While this is a tried and true method of playing the competition, there is a hidden art to this event often overlooked by many - raiding the dead.
Some players find that harvesting large quantities of tags from inactive players is more efficient, and lower key, than exchanging tags with other actives. And not only does your tag collecting remain secret, but it also comes with zero consequences, unless said players return to their accounts after being inactive.

This tactic comes in very handy for new players or those with weak stats. And, rumor has it that a group of ninja players is harvesting inactive tags with over a 70% collection success rate! This rumor has been confirmed by the fact we interviewed one of these players, who is among a group of lower level players focusing on the merits and tokens provided by the Dog Tag competition, rather than 1st place.
Note: The player in question wishes to remain anonymous, and is known as Ninja Tagger for the duration of this article.
Q: Thank you agreeing to speak with me. Many of our readers would like to know, what is your secret to success?
NT: First I get tags, then I keep tags.
Q: While that was infinitely helpful to many readers, what's the real answer? How many tags do you have?
NT: I currently have over 250 tags.
Q: How did you get them all? Or maybe a better question is where did you get them all from?
NT: That is the million-dollar question. While most people are fighting each other over a few 100-point staff tags, I am collecting 5- and 10-point tags en masse from inactive players.
Q: You said before your interview your collection rate is above 70%, what are you doing that no one else is?
NT: To start, I'm only hitting players over 80 days inactive. I have found a correlation between longer inactive times and collecting tags on the first hit.
Q: It can't be as simple as just hitting inactive accounts, how can you reliably get tags?
NT: Here is my golden secret you paid for. Inactive players are only ever going to have one tag, once lost they will never take one from someone else. In addition, we know higher inactive days increases the players drop % for their tag. So, what if we just looked at the "Defends Lost" chart in their stat page to see when they last lost a fight? If it's before the beginning of the completion, they still have their tag.
Q: It can't be that simple. If that's the case, why don't you have a 100% collect rate?
NT: Because the chart only updates once per day. Someone could have attacked them earlier today and I can't tell by the chart. In addition to the chart, I also check their current HP on their profile page as another potential indicator that they have been hit. There's also a cap of around 80% or 90%, so no one can guarantee a tag 100% of the time.
Q: Why share this information now?
NT: For one, you're paying me. Additionally, I've hit my 250 tags in the first 3-4 days. Since I'm sitting comfortably in the top 95% with my 250+ tags, I figured I'd share the wealth. Since you only need to be holding 250 tags to unlock both merits, there are plenty of inactive accounts for people to farm the merits without hitting other active players, at least until the last week when it matters for the top ten.
Q: How are you maintaining all your tags to get above 250?
NT: I self-hosp with IEDs, blood bags and I fly. When I go to bed, I use standard travel to fly to UAE. I set a timer to wake up and send myself back to Torn at night as well. When I arrive back, I complete 22 hits.
Q: How do you do 22 hits when you land?
NT: Yep. Six from Natural Energy, six from a refill and I pop a Xanax for ten more. Every morning I start my day with around 20 more tags. I wake up before the flight actually arrives and open windows for all my targets to know who I'm going to hit. It's all about minimizing landing time. Then I just fly out to rehab, back for more plushies and flowers or stay in the hosp.
So there you have it, folks, the secret for overachieving in the Dog Tags competition. It's time to get farming! Because if you follow the guide within this article, it seems the 900 people with the Departure merit are going to get a lot more company this year.
Cliff-Notes:
- Hit low level in-actives over 80+ days.
- Line up your targets using advanced search.
- Check to make sure they have not lost a defend since the competition started.
- Line these up before you land to minimize time on the ground.
- Change weapons while attacking to work on your finishing hit merits!
- Use standard travel when you need to sleep or take a break.
- Run down drug and medical cooldowns while sleeping or taking a break.
- Give yourself longer flight times to ensure fewer lost tags when you are absent.
- Remember to set an alarm to fly back or you'll have a long morning flight back!
NOTE: An update to the current tags scores will be published early next week.
