Have you ever wondered which companies pay the least? Which are the most unpopular industries? And whether any of these firms might be boosted in future?
Torn’s most recent newsletter indicated that a series of small tweaks will soon be made to some of our city’s less attractive companies. The aim of this initiative is to balance the share of employees across all industries, with this deemed more important than the constant creation of new firms which require ever more staff to fill them.
A recent forum post by Smurf highlighted the problem of cripplingly high wages in Torn’s private industries, and it seems Chedburn has acknowledged this issue with his plan to amend existing companies. It has been suggested that both profit and specials could be boosted in some of Torn’s less successful industries to help Torn's wage issues, but how will Chedburn judge which company types to tinker with?

Pictured: This guy tried to work it out and after ten days he still didn't have a f***ing clue.
According to what we’ve been told by Chedburn, the decision will be at least partially based on which companies pay the least and have the fewest employees. Using said data, it will be obvious which industries need to be boosted to equalise the system. Unfortunately, these statistics aren’t publicly available, so it is hard to know which companies Chedburn is likely to target.
At least it would be if I hadn’t swiped the stats from his mink-lined briefcase while he was briefly distracted by a chaffinch that looked kinda like Morgan Freeman. So having gotten our greasy mitts on this confidential info, let’s first look at the companies with the lowest number of employees in Torn.
NOTE: THIS INFORMATION WAS CORRECT AS OF JULY 3RD
THE LEAST POPULAR COMPANIES IN TORN
4.) Meat Warehouse - 153 employees
The Meat Warehouse offers just one job point special, Blood Thirst, which allows players to gain one nerve point for one job point. Its remaining specials are all passive, giving players extra melee weapon damage, maximum nerve, hunting skill gains and life regeneration per tick. There seem to be just 16 actively trading Meat Warehouses in Torn, so one wonders whether profit increase, special boosts or a decrease in the stats required could help improve this industry’s attractiveness.
4.) Private Security Firm - 153 employees
The Private Security Firm was one of the first of several new companies introduced to Torn in recent years, and so you could blame this for its relative lack of popularity. However, these firms are also quite expensive to start up, with a $950,000,000 initial fee required, and the high stats asked of their employees makes these firms hard to get right - there are only twelve active PSFs in Torn today. A reduction of the startup cost may help here, or a slight buff to some specials.
3.) Theater - 139 employees
The Theater industry is currently hampered by the fact that one of its four specials, Twinlike, is presently unavailable. This perk is supposed to give players a 25% boost in forgery success rate and skill gains, but without it, Theater employees are only able to make use of four specials, making this an obvious area for improvement.
2.) Music Store - 121 employees
Another company with a limited set of specials is the Music Store, whose three-star special Bootlegger is also temporarily unavailable. Without it, only happiness, stealth and a passive stat increase are provided. These are all useful specials, especially for such a cheap company ($1,500,000 to start), so Music Stores could potentially benefit from an increase in profits and the stats required to work there.
1.) Gas Station - 99 employees
The Gas Station is the least popular company in Torn, with its two-figure employee total the result of its specials being too specific and reduced to four - the five-star Arsonist perk is unavailable. Early specials give players racing points for job points (Machinist) and a 75% reduction on car part costs (Discount Parts), and while Torn’s racing community has grown in recent years, it still isn’t enough to attract great numbers to work at the Gas Station. The final two specials provide Molotov Cocktails and a 50% boost to their damage and duration - a rather specific and weak offering for seven and ten-star companies.
THE WORST PAYING COMPANIES IN TORN
2.) Restaurant - $10,000
The Restaurant is tied with four other companies for the joint second-worst pay in Torn City, offering a median of $10,000 per day to their broke-ass employees. As a result, Restaurants have attracted just 526 employees to the profession, with their specials nowhere near good enough to compensate for their low pay.
With a $1,000,000 start-up cost, Restaurants will never likely make a huge amount of money, so improvements must be made to their lower star perks. The 2% life regeneration per tick and 25% consumable cooldown reduction available at seven and ten stars are useful, but not enough on their own to draw people in. If these were pushed down to three and five stars, some tastier specials for top-ranked firms would surely draw people in.
2.) Gents Strip Club - $10,000
247 people work in Gentlemen’s Strip Clubs, making this the eighth-least popular industry in Torn. One reason for this is that only women are effective in this company, as it was previously assumed that men exclusively prefer lap dances from the opposite sex. In our presently enlightened times this restriction seems odd (gay blokes exist, I’ve seen them down the shops) so the Gent’s Strip Club may be best served by removing this limitation entirely, or by combining both the mens' and womens' strip clubs.
The low specials aren’t great here either, with the one-star Happy Hour perk giving players around $10k per job point, and the Free Drinks three-star special providing one nerve for the same amount. The High Heels provided for 500 job points at five stars represents good value for money, though, as these are worth about $15 million compared to the rough value of $5 million for the job points. But selling these can be difficult, so some kind of stat boost to this item could also improve the popularity of the Gent’s Strip Club.
2.) Firework Stand - $10,000
Firework Stands cost just $500,000 to set up - joint cheapest with the Candle and Flower Shops - and with ridiculously low stats required to work here and a huge amount of competition, it is no surprise that the wages on offer are so low. There are 364 Firework Stands in Torn, but only 83 seem to be operational. Our recent glut of new players means this entry-level company is never going to struggle for employees, but are those who work there being underpaid?
Possibly, as the specials aren’t worth a great deal, with nerve, awareness and a flame-thrower boost given between one and five stars. The seven-star special is unavailable, meaning the only other perk is the ten-star Inferno, which provides random amounts of incendiary ammunition. This seems like yet another company which should be made more attractive by boosting its specials rather than its profits.
2.) Grocery Store - $10,000
The Grocery Store has half-decent specials, as while the free candy and alcohol at one and five stars aren’t much to shout home about, the ability to exchange twelve job points for cans at ten-stars most certainly is. The cheapest cans available are Santa Shooters, and even if you only ever received this brand, you’d still be getting roughly $200k value for every job point spent - Adult Novelties provide roughly the same exchange rate when swapping job points for EDVDs.
Coupled with the passive effects of a 10% consumable cooldown and a 10% consumable boost at three and seven stars, this makes the Grocery Store an attractive place to work. Despite it being far down on the list in terms of pay, I wouldn’t expect any massive changes to this already useful company. The only exception would be if Chedburn brings in some lower value cans which reduce the average value of the ten-star special - a distinct possibility in future.
1.) Music Store - $1,000
The 121 employees of the Music Store industry are paid the joint-lowest median wage in Torn City. As we mentioned earlier, this company type has only four available specials, so boosting the rest would certainly help increase the number of employees working here. But considering the appalling pay on offer too, it may be that a two-pronged approach is needed, with a boost to profits and a perk improvement required.
1.) Farm - $1,000
Farms are something of an anomaly right now, as despite being the 15th most popular company type to work for, they are joint rock-bottom of the median wage chart. The most useful specials this company provides are related to happiness and energy, with the latter capable of providing 700 extra energy per day in exchange for 100 job points - a useful boost during Wars, Elimination and Dog Tags.
The other Farm specials are less useful, with Ketamine and a 25% boost to hunting rewards bettered only by the provision of small explosive devices for 100 job points. The current value of SEDs is $3,000,000, meaning that this exchange rate of $30,000 per JP can’t compete with the Grocery Store can special. One possible solution would be to reduce the price of an SED drastically to 20 or even 10 job points, giving the Farm an edge over its low-pay rivals.
So those are the worst paying and least popular companies in Torn. We can expect some changes to be made to some of these firms over the next few months, so keep an eye on the newspaper for such announcements. And for those of you who would like to know the median pay and number of employees working in every industry, please see the spreadsheet below - note, this information was correct as of July 3rd, 2019.
