If you've never won a Community Event but you like free stuff, then boy have we got a suggestion for you. Read on to find out which Halloween themed competitions are running, and how to win them.
Have you ever won a Community Event? If the answer is no, then I'm here to tell you how you can stop being one of life's perpetual losers and take your rightful place atop the victory podium.

Right now there are no fewer than seven Halloween competitions going on over at Community Events. We have everything from a best-dressed pet event and a pumpkin carving challenge through to a creepy storytelling competition and a meme contest. Yet many people seem to think that they have no chance of winning. That is not true.

If truth be told, our events receive a lot of terrible entries. Forget half-assing, if you were to quarter-ass an entry you'd be in with a chance of placing in some contests. And with so many great prizes on offer, why wouldn't you just full-ass it and go for gold? Champion may have temporarily departed Torn City, but if you win a Community Event, you will receive the much-coveted Champion honor bar, thus making you the real Champion.

1st place is also rewarded with a Gold Ribbon, 1,000 points and an item worth $500 million - often a stat enhancer. Second and third take ribbons too, along with 500 / 250 points and an item worth $25 million / $5 million. On top of that, certain contests also pay out additional bonus prizes, including unique awards and hauls of useful goodies. So if you'd like to try your hand at one of our Community Events this Halloween, here's a list of all our current contests, and what you can do to win them.

Pumpkin Carving

The Pumpkin Carving contest has just three entries right now. The judges don't take notice of how early or how many upvotes an entry gets, but by entering now, you'll avoid repeating an idea that's already been done. Draw out your idea before carving so you know what you're doing ahead of time. We'll always favour Torn-themed pumpkins over anything else, but just like in Saudi Arabia, it's the execution that's most important. Oh, and don't forget to give your pumpkin a nice backdrop and take a clear photo too. If we can't see it, what's the f***ing point?

Creepy Bedtime Stories

This event is best suited to those who really want to put some effort into their entries. We want you to record a 60-second creepy story set in Torn City, so if you've got a voice for radio or an eye for writing drama this is the contest for you. Take your time to write an interesting story before recording it, and try adding music and sound effects for extra fanciness. And make sure your story is clever. If the twist at the end is "Crimes 2.0 was great, but then I woke up and it was all a dream", I will go round to your mother's house and tell her that new haircut doesn't take ten years off her at all.

Best Halloween Costume

This event can be low-effort if you want, as with the competition only closing at midnight on November 1st, you could just take a picture of your regular Halloween costume next week and submit that - so long as you include your player name or number. Torn-themed outfits are nice, but we don't get many of them, and it's probably a bit racist to dress up as Leslie these days anyway. If your costume is well thought out or just a little bit gross, we'll probably like it. Hats off to Estelle for her 2017 entry below. It's bloody marvellous.

Best Dressed Pet

I'm going to begin with a simple request: PLEASE DO NOT DYE YOUR PETS GREEN, BLUE OR ANY COLOUR JUST TO WIN IMAGINARY TORN ITEMS. Now that we've got that out of the way, I'd like to suggest that the owners of non-traditional pets like horses, spiders or megasloths try entering this competition, as it's always nice to see something other than a dog with reindeer antlers on its head. Last year, the winning entry wasn't dressed-up much, but we were tricked by Josephine's sweet story about her dogs being orphans or something. This year that won't be the case. I don't care if your dog only has a week to live. If it looks like crap, it ain't winning.

Best Torn Meme

This is probably the lowest of the low-effort competitions running right now. I mean, how hard is it to slap text on a jpeg? Not hard at all. So try to put at least a small amount of effort into thinking of a unique idea for your meme. Go through this year's entries and see what's already been done, then don't do those things. And please, for the love of God, leave off the Crimes 2.0 skeleton memes. Make fun of recent events for maximum impact, like mugging changes, dirty bombs, or the fact that most of the people who posted essay-length quit posts are online right this minute.

Creepy Poem

If the prospect of recording yourself for the creepy story competition fills you with dread, then enter the creepy poem contest instead. Oh look, that rhymes. This competition already has over 100 entries so far, so you'll need to make your poem stand out if you haven't submitted already. For a start, your entry should be shorter than Tyrion Lannister's ding-dong - a handful of stanzas at most. Also, make sure you've used a consistent meter. If your beats are all over the show, it will be annoying to read. If in doubt, nick the structure of another poem and write yours accordingly - just make sure you change the words, or we'll find out and beat you consistently using a meter ruler.

Decorate Your Torn Home

For reasons unknown we used to combine this competition with the signature design contest. This year, we haven't, so that's nice. All you need to do here is find or draw a 600 by 400 image of a Torn property (or one that looks similar) and decorate it using Halloween themed items. Subtle animations seem to go down well in this competition, but the best entries are the ones that are neat, tidy and we can tell you've spent time on. Here's 100points' second-place entry from last year what he done a draw of with the photo shops.

tl;dr: Enter Torn Competition. Don't be crap. Send by 1st of November. Win fancy thing.
