War erupts over Proxy Rackets

ORAN [1778676]
Natural Selection, Subversive Alliance, 39th Street and We Are Rising involved in skirmish over racket territories held by proxy factions. Conflict may escalate over coming days.
Is Torn on the brink of yet another huge faction conflict? It appears so, with a dispute over territorial rackets potentially set to escalate into a city-wide war involving several major factions.

Last week the Torn City Times was made aware of a campaign by Subversive Alliance to hoover up a number of high-value rackets using their proxy factions. On the 14th of October, an anonymous rival faction member told us that Brotherhood of War, The Igloo, Impulse, Dead Body Crew and Mental Disorder were all funnelling the proceeds of their rackets to SA, and it was also rumoured that One Punch were giving half of their racket earnings to Midknight's troops in return for protection too. Our anonymous source is not impressed.

"I think it's pretty greedy of them to be taking as many rackets as they are with these factions who would otherwise not be able to take them and hold them.
I also think it's pretty crazy being how they apparently fought the war against JF and allies saying they wanted to free torn from them yet they are 10x worse trying to control the whole map."

We have now been told that this situation has escalated, and other major factions have taken umbrage at SA's actions, with Natural Selection seemingly furious at the double-standards being shown by a former member of the Insurgency. And so righteous and furious is their indignation, that Torn City may be on the brink of yet another divisive and brutal war.

Subversive Alliance currently occupies the prime sector 1 island territory which they took during the Insurgency War versus the TUN alliance earlier this year. Despite paying out high levels of respect, the island's territories do not currently play host to any rackets. Subversive Alliance seemingly did not want to miss out on the benefits provided by this new feature, so they've called in their proxies to help.

If you’re unaware of how this works, major factions will basically buy up a 50,000 – 200,000 Respect faction and fill it with all the level 90+ players they have. These players will then work to take over a desirable racket, after which a trusted member will stay to reap the rewards for the main faction. This tactic results in the big guys getting a larger slice of the pie than they should, and we also get some rather creative names and Faction Descriptions to boot.

"Pictured: It's bad when you have to say it."

Subversive Alliance currently has five proxy factions that we know of who have been working to acquire rackets for them. At the time of writing, The Brotherhood of War are their only proxy in active conflict, as they seek possession of an Illegal Casino worth $25 million a day. This racket's current owners are a faction called Vinerri, a Sector 7 bully faction who are often too scared to pick someone on their own level. Pretty ironic if you’d ask me.

Another racket battle which only recently ended was an invasion by Mental Disorder of a truck stop territory owned by We Are Rising and a money launderer owned by Little Stompers. Both territories are now owned by Mental Disorder after their assault was successful, and WAR leader WALL_St told the times that his side had no choice but to relinquish the rackets in the face of decimation by Subversive Alliance.

"We decided to abandon the fight because (to our understanding) the fight against sa and ns was closing down and we knew that SA and Insurgency was going to come to us fully swinging. Or they would stack, switch to war perks and overwhelm us with a full assault."

"Thus, war, honey badgers and little stompers decided to settle for them giving us back the spots they took. I also would like to point out the war was with me, little stompers and honey badgers family against insurgency."

As WALL_St says, both WAR and LS were made to hand over their rackets if they wished to retrieve the territories they'd lost to SA's proxies. WALL_St was proud that he and his allies managed to stand against the strongest alliance in the game with an average battle stat total of a few million, and while he regrets not winning the rackets back, he believes the fact they restored their respect gains means they did indeed win something.

Conversely, SA leader Midknight was less than complimentary about his side's opponents in this fight.

“Cristen [MD leader] is a big girl with many friends and We are Rising are low class citizens. She'll be fine.”

This situation is worrying. It's one thing for a small Sector 7 faction to be bullied out of a territorial racket, but quite another for a strong, top 100 Hall of Fame outfit like We Are Rising to be made to bend the knee like this. Midknight denies the existence of any SA proxies, claiming "we work with faction owners to acquire rackets near to them, nothing more." He went on to say that Impulse, Igloo and BoW were already up and coming when they offered their assistance, and that if war comes their way, Subversive Alliance will support them.

Whether SA owns these factions officially is irrelevant. If they are protected by SA, given instructions by SA and they are paying for said services with racket profits, these smaller factions are effectively their property, whether they will admit it or not. Every faction claims to be "going it alone" in fights like these, but they are almost always backed up by friends, allies and subservient proxies coincidentally stacked with the main faction's best players.

What's interesting is just how many of these proxy factions are out there right now, and how major names are accidentally attacking them. Not every one of SA's "protected" factions has their owner's name tattooed on their profiles. Indeed, this confusion is precisely why Natural Selection ended up fighting SA in the first place, as Stretch explains.

"We have been trying to arrange a war for a while, but have been rebuffed, so we went to look for a racket to take and fell into this lil hornets nest, but it gives us something fun to do."

"SA seems to have went hard on rackets via proxy factions attacking people who helped support them in the Insurgency campaign even. We just targeted a rando faction, had no idea they were involved, as it was some 5 man operation with people who all had been there 1,500 days, figured, go get it, only to find out it was an SA proxy."

It is no secret that Natural Selection have been trying to arrange a war for some time now. Subversive Alliance were one of the factions who rejected their advances, with Midknight explaining that timing was the main issue. Post-Elimination, the huge number of dirty bombs prevented any meaningful conflict from breaking out. And with an SA chain taking place late October, and Dog Tags running throughout November, a war between the two sides was not convenient.

However, Midknight told me they did have a war against NS pencilled in for December. It appears this battle has now been brought forward unintentionally, though, and there are fears it may escalate given how easily other factions have become embroiled in the conflict. Penicillin, leader of Waste Management, a faction owned by NS, told me that after his side took a Xanax racket from an SA proxy, they also went after a Neumune racket held by a 39th Street proxy. 39th did not respond with indifference.

"39th saw us working our way toward it, and planned to defend the territory. Unfortunately for them, they had this one inactive player holding the faction for them and the guy had been offline for 13 days and they couldn't reach him to get him to log in and accept the 39th members, who were waiting with stacked energy, into the faction to defend the territory."

"After losing that racket, I think they were pissed off about the situation, so they tried to make a move on the other racket we took. Sadly, they felt the need to call in guests right away. In our minds, we totally understand them wanting to defend their territory and we are glad they did, but attacking us to try to gain a different racket was an act of aggression."

39th are hitting back against Natural Selection via 39th Street Killers XR, and this means Stretch's troops are now fighting on several fronts. One wonders if Subversive Alliance will co-ordinate with 39th Street, given they now have a mutual foe. Moreover, the likes of We Are Rising and Little Stompers might try to take back their rackets, if SA are inconvenienced by Natural Selection elsewhere.

Natural Selection certainly don't look like they're going to let SA wander across the map unopposed. According to Stretch, other unnamed factions are being asked to help defend Subversive Alliance's proxy rackets, and he feels this is contrary to the goals stated by the Insurgency Alliance, which SA were a major part of.

"The entire Insurgency concept was all about staying out of other's business, no dog-piling, freedom from "evil overlord" and all that propaganda..."

Stretch then cited this post by Midknight from a thread over seven months old (someone's been holding a grudge), in particular, one quote regarding territories where Midknight essentially said that if factions can earn a territory, they should be able to have it. This attitude does seem in contrast to the aims of Insurgency, and one wonders what the other members of this group feel about SA's actions.

If I were to speculate wildly, I'd imagine they're not all on-board with this use of racket proxies. So does this change how factions might respond to SA in future? WALL_St seemed to believe that he was fighting the whole Insurgency alliance when he took on SA's proxies. But might he consider a fresh counter-attack if he knew that SA was acting alone? Because when Miro was asked if this war had anything to do with Insurgency or if it was solely an SA venture, his reply was rather blunt.

"Insurgency is dead".

If that's true, then your guess is as good as ours as to what will happen next. Midknight even suggested that SA could vacate their prime Sector 1 island territories which Insurgency fought so hard to obtain, if the right opportunity came along, saying that "the island means nothing to us in the larger scheme of things. It was a challenge we accepted and completed. If something is there for the taking it might as well be us taking it."

This attitude is evidenced by Subversive Alliance's ruthless attempt to snap up as many rackets as possible. SA are willing to wage war across Torn City to improve their acquisitions, and even their peace terms demand the concession of rackets from their vanquished opponents. Make no bones about it, SA are on the move. The question is, will other factions allow them to run rampant throughout Torn? Is this small-time racket war about to escalate? Or will everyone roll over like good boys and girls?

"It's Torn. Action could quite conceivably break out at any moment."
- Miro
