Dear Aunty Torn

In her first column of the year, Aunty tells her readers how to shake off bounties, what the difference is between a scam and exploitation, and how to propose to the love of your life!
New year, new me! Aunty has had her legs waxed to celebrate the start of the decade, and who knows where else she'll have hair removed from over the coming weeks. That upper lip has been crying out for a shave for a while now, and let's not even talk about the small of her back - it's like a little tail!

But enough of hirsute old Aunty, because it's time for her readers to receive her smooth, hairless nuggets of advice once more. First up this month, we have a victim of bounty bullying! Oh what to do.

Dear Aunty,

I've been struggling with some people who are constantly mugging me and putting bounties on me. I have avoided them for a while but I am starting to get annoyed. How could I combat this without getting factions involved?

Anon

Hi,

For a start, make sure you always have $0 in your wallet. There are many ways to store your cash so it remains liquid but off-limits to muggers, and this article from a couple months ago tells you how to go about this, as well as offering up a few other handy hints too.

The key to handling bountiers is to avoid interacting with them, as most of the time you'll only ever provoke them more. Unless you know specifically what they want I'd say ignore them, as eventually, they will get bored! That’s the only advice I can really give without getting others involved.

Good luck!

Dear Aunty,

I stumbled across a random thread by a low-level complaining he was scammed when he was messaged by a higher level player wanting to buy losses. Apparently, the low level knew nothing about "slutting" and sold these losses at 25k each. The thread went on about how about how "abusive" high levels were. It seemed that many saying they had been scammed by high levels as well.

At first, I thought these high levels were doing something pretty bad, but after some more reading, they were basically complaining that they sold 100 sheep plushies for 50k rather than 55k. Then someone used the word "exploit" when describing the situation and the thread became more of a debate whether it was okay to "exploit", but not to "scam".

After reading this, I remembered a pretty old Torn newspaper clip on all the different types of scams that existed in Torn and how they were done. Took some time, but I found it and read it again, and something like "lowballing" prices isn't considered a scam in Torn's eyes. Considering how so many people come to you for your wisdom, I was wondering if you could solve this puzzling question.

What counts as a scam, and what counts as an exploit? Not only would this solve a personal question, I believe your answer could help some self-victimizing newbies to stop complaining and work harder instead.

CrimsonCarnival

Hi CrimsonCarnival,

I would say that scamming is when you offer to do or give someone something they want or need in return for something else, and then not follow through. Exploitation is taking advantage of someone’s naivety or circumstance/desperation to profit yourself. Underpaying for losses is just trying to save money. Why pay more for something when you can pay less? This is a lesson in life. A young player can also spend 2 minutes asking in chat or browsing the forums to see a fair value for a service/item. If they don’t understand that, they are probably too young to play Torn. Perspective is key, I suppose

Good luck,
Aunty Torn

Dear Aunty Torn,

Would you happen to have any knowledge if the games in Torn City Casino are rigged to take away our money? I have been getting 9-12 straight losses in between 1-2 wins every day. The win-loss ratio is incredibly skewed. Should I just buy lottery tickets and hope for the best instead?

Anon

Hi Anon,

The House always wins! This is true in Torn's casino and indeed any casino in the world. The only games that should have even odds are poker and RR, but any other games of chance will always benefit the house more than the average player over a long enough period of time.

If you are becoming paranoid that the casino is screwing you, that tells me you aren't enjoying yourself there. Take some time away. The lottery is less irritating but it comes with a much lower chance of winning. Have you tried working the item markets? This feels like a fairer, smarter form of gambling to some, as it's based on real info - info you can often find in our newspaper's monthly Market Report.

Either way, my best advice is to find money without using the casino. They call it gambling for a reason!

Good Luck,
Aunty Torn

Dear Aunty Torn,

What’s the best way to say sorry in Torn? I recently used a lot of Xanax from the faction armoury and used it for myself instead of chaining. I didn’t know we had to chain with it so they kicked me out. I am really ashamed of this act and I have given the leader some money for my apologies. I’m sure money doesn’t make up for what I did, so is there a better way to apologize?

Some dude

Hi Some dude,

I think intentions are important. If something is done in ignorance and you feel bad, making it right by paying for it and saying your sorry is the best route. You did the right thing in the end, and if your apology isn’t accepted, that’s on the person who won’t forgive. You can always ask them what you can do to make things right, but at some point, if they won't relent, you should just move on. Lesson learned!

Good luck,
Aunty Torn

Dear Aunty Torn,

So there is this lass that I have chatting to for a while now and we seem to be hitting it off. I recently gifted her with a piece of jewellery as a gesture of my affection without a responsive comment. Makes sense though. In today’s economy, it was probably simpler to pawn than acknowledge.

Anyway, I know I am shooting to the stars with this lass. They are kind, down to earth and on paper appear kind of real. They are also a much higher level and therefore totally out of my league. I don’t know what to do, Aunty Torn. I got a Diamond Ring and I want to pop the question but I am too nervous to move ahead. Sigh, this is silly…
What should I do?

Nervous Wreck

Dear Mr Nervous Wreck,

This woman has taken your stuff and completely ignored you. If you're into being cuckolded then go for it! Give her the Diamond Ring. Send her a Donator Pack. Trade your Private Island and a Stat Enhancer for her shack. Turn up at her home at 3am playing the acoustic guitar outside her bedroom win... no, maybe don't do that last one.

In return, you might get a "thanks hun" or a "cheers babe x". Is that worth it? Are you worth more than this? Aunty thinks you should value yourself a little higher than to settle for someone who ignores you. Right now, you're half price in a 99 cent store. Bump up those prices sonny. Charge top dollar! (Do not become a rent boy. That's not what I'm saying).

When you've done that, Aunty thinks you should cast your net a little wider. There are plenty of eligible partners on the market right now, and some of them might not ignore you. And when you find the one, maybe they'll propose to you first!

Good Luck!
Aunty Torn

That's all for this week my lovelies! If you have any queer queries for Aunty then drop me a message via Torn's Tell Your Story feature. Anyone featured in my monthly column will receive a Donator Pack along with some fantastic advice that I definitely haven't just made up on the spot. Right, Aunty's going to see if that leftover Christmas turkey is still good. See you next month everyone!
