New annual bonus day added to the calendar. Double racing points and skill on offer for 48 hours. Find out how to get started in racing in time for this weekend's brand new event!
Have you been staring longingly at the Bugatti Veyron wishing you'd made it into the Ultimate Racing Tournament? Is your Driver Skill lower than DUDE DUDE's IQ? Then why not release your inner petrolhead this weekend and make use of Torn's first-ever Weekend Road Trip bonus event, during which you can gain double the usual amount of racing points and driver skill XP!
This event starts at noon on Friday the 31st of January, lasting 48 hours until noon on Sunday the 2nd of February. All official races which FINISH during this timeframe will pay out twice as many Racing Points and Driver Skill points as usual, whereas all unofficial races will pay out twice as many driver skill points. Please note that a race has not officially ended until the final participant has crossed the finish line.

If you haven't yet begun to explore the Racing side of Torn then this is the perfect time to do so. Racing is an inexpensive pastime which has little impact on the rest of your gameplay, as races do not cost you nerve, money or energy to enter - unless you enter a custom race with a betting option. You can acquire six Honor Bars from racing, and there's also the chance to earn extra cash if you manage to place well in player-run races or competitions, which are advertised via the Racing Forums.
Baldr's Racing FAQ is a must-read for beginners, but the first thing you'll need is a Racing License (not a driver's license) which you can obtain from the Points Building for 50 points. Once you've bought this, you can start entering Official Races and Custom Races down at the Race Track. Oh, and you'll obviously need a car, because running around the Race Track in your underwear and a helmet isn't advised.

All new drivers start at Class E, so this is the only class of car you can buy as a newbie. Baldr recommends that you purchase a Honda Civic to begin with, which can be found on the Item Market for $9-12k today. When you level up to Class D, C, B and A, Baldr's guide tells you which cars you should go for when you make the step up.
When you've purchased a car you must enlist the vehicle by going to your Items page and clicking the tick box next to it. You can now enter Official or Custom Races with your shiny new automobile. Entering an Official Race will see you paired up with other players with similar car stats to yours, and if you finish first, second or third, you will receive 3, 2 or 1 Racing Points - obviously, these figures are doubled during the Weekend Road Trip event.
Players who have earned 25 Racing Points will rank up to Class D, with 100, 250 and 475 required to move up to Classes C, B and A respectively. Racing Points can be spent on upgrades to your cars too, and it is recommended that each time you rank up, you purchase a new car in that class and spend some (but not all) of your Racing Points upgrading it, as this will improve your chances of placing in the top three in your new class.
Custom Races do not provide you with Racing Points, but both Custom and Official Races both give you a boost to your Driver Skill score. You will receive twice as much Driver Skill XP from races as usual during the Road Trip Weekend, and the most XP is to be gained from longer races - 100 laps being the maximum. However, you must make sure that any Custom or Official races you enter finish before noon on Sunday the 2nd if you want to earn double racing skill and points from it.
If you want to make an educated guess as to whether your race should end in time, take a look at your Statistics page at the Race Track and see what your best lap times are. If your best lap is 1 minute 30, your next race has 100 laps, and it starts at 11am on Sunday morning, there ain't a cat's chance in hell you're passing the finish line in time to receive the bonus points and XP.

There are a few other ways you can earn extra Racing Points and Driver Skill XP aside from races, and these methods are covered in detail by Baldr's Racing Guide. If you have any other specific questions then don't be afraid to search or post on the Racing Forums. Torn's racing community are a positive bunch who always seem to support new drivers. And if you start racing hard this weekend, who knows, maybe you'll be in with a shot at qualifying for the next Ultimate Racing Tournament in the summer!
TL;DR: Official Races payout double Racing Points and Driver Skill from noon 31st Jan until noon 2nd Feb. Custom Races payout Double Driver skill during the same period. All races must end within this timeframe to be eligible.
