Which subfaction landed on the island with ease? Who has been extorting factions in sector 6? And who is purchasing Trap House Corporation? Find out all this and more in our latest Local News Report
At the risk of developing repetitive strain injury, we've decided to bring you another hot jet of speculation from the streets of Torn City in the form of an additional Local News article. Many interesting stories have passed by our desks over the past week, and we thought their spicy contents might help to distract your brain from the effects of lockdown. Here be gossip. Enter at your peril.
NATURAL SELECTION AT WORK
The big story from the weekend was that Natural Selection II lived up to their name and ensured only the fittest may survive on the island, as they removed Unrelenting 2 from Torn's prime sector 1 territories and dumped them at the city's edge quicker than a trucker disposing of a hooker's corpse. Late on Friday night, an exasperated member of UR2 gave me the following summary of events.
"UR2 scheduled a mock war with URM today, UR 2 declared at 1700. At 1900 NS II declared on UR2. I personally was hosp'd at 1905. Before the hour was up management made the decision to abandon all holdings and leave the island."
As screenshots from Kata's thread show, Unrelenting 2 and Unrelenting Medical immediately abandoned their territories as soon as Natural Selection II attacked. Somewhat surprisingly, Unrelenting failed to turn up to support their subfaction in their hour of need, and Lord_OFlame of UR2 decided he wasn't going to try and explain why papa Zahid didn't turn up to kiss it all better.

Pictured: Welcome feedback from a happy customer.
Lord_OFlame may have clammed up like some sort of giant clam, but on the forums, Unrelenting's leader ItsZahid explained the absence of UR main with the following comment:
"...UR1 WOULD fight, this is if we were attacked directly OR could even reach the island to defend. But we simply were not attacked, nor had the ability to reach the island. I understand that NS II was not aware of this and expected us to come, but we couldn't! so there's that. Anyone who says other dumb s**t like we are running away or whatever is just deluded."
Is this ItsZahid's way of minimising the PR disaster that was Unrelenting's abject failure to defend its own subfaction? Yes, but he does have a point, as the factions on either side of the island are hardly friendly to Unrelenting's cause, so there was no way they could've gotten there to help in time.
However, that shouldn't stop UR from defending their honour at a later date. So will ItsZahid make amends for their absence like a dad who overcompensates for missing his son's birthday by buying him a Rolex? Because I'm pretty sure that's how Evil-Duck got his.

Pictured: A watch can hold your hand better than any father could *sobs*.
So if Unrelenting do try to hit back, when will they strike? And who? And why? And also who again? It seems likely UR will have to assault Natural Selection II for no other reason than pride, even though by ItsZahid's own admission they know they will probably lose. And in a brief interview with NS II's co-leader Rhino, he made clear that their motive for this attack was the animosity between the two sides, giving ItsZahid further reason to strike back.
"[We attacked] to evict them... We've never got along with UR... we're not staying on the island."
Rhino expressed doubts that UR would even bother counterattacking at all, given their recent poor fortunes on the battlefield, predicting that "after UR lost to JUX, I imagine they'll probably opt for the safer route of attacking someone they won't lose to." Regardless, Rhino says that NS II will return to their previous territories shortly as he feels "the island is a cage, we don't want to be caged."
He added that Dystopia will be allowed to move into their vacant island holdings, and when I asked him why that particular faction was chosen, Rhino remarked that they were "one of the only factions we could think of that we were friendly with that would want to do it, to be honest." However, Dystopia can expect some attention if they do take up NSII's territories, with a potential second attack from ELITE on the way shortly.

Pictured: An excerpt from the full mailout which can be seen here and here.
This mailout was sent by Kitman to ELITE's members on Friday. ELITE attacked NS II shortly afterwards and failed to make an impact. Rhino admitted that they lasted longer than UR2, though, adding that "They deserve more respect than UR though, at least they made us work for it rather than throwing in the towel immediately."
But the tone of that mailout suggests that ELITE are desperate to avoid a public loss of face similar to that which Unrelenting 2 suffered when they ran from their fight with NS II. When I asked Rhino if they would step up to defend Dystopia in the event of another assault, he said that would depend on who attacked, adding that the faction is not owned by NSII, and nor are they their puppets.
So will ELITE take another shot at redemption when NSII leave the island? Their leader Kitman doesn't believe that this question needs answering, as it simply won't happen.
"Why would NS vacate? They are safer from Corona there."
Whether this fight comes to pass is something we should know shortly, if and when Dystopia is handed the keys to the financial district. Dystopia's leader Nurz seemed to confirm that they would be taking over part of the island shortly though, with the following comment all but confirming their move.
"We are hoping to train, but for our relatively new players, this is an adventure we just couldn't turn down - with the staleness of wall farming for a considerable time its like a holiday for us. We are resigned that as the world turns it will always be a contested area great wars have been fought in the past over the island. We will see how things develop, of course, we will always do our best in the face of any aggressor - our best is all we can do."
A KEY WORKER LOSES THEIR INCOME

RELENTLESS TO BUY THC?
A faction mailout seen by the Torn City Times indicates that Relentless may be about to purchase Trap House Corporation. It appears that THC's leadership came to the conclusion they could not succeed as an independent faction when their recent assault against ShadowSpire drew in the likes of Onion Smugglers and The Igloo to their defence.

The full mailout can be seen here. It goes on to explain how Cristen of Relentless - reportedly a friend of THC - was given temporary leadership duties in the face of threats from The Igloo. Cristen managed to secure a peace treaty with The Igloo by pretending she had bought THC and that they were now allied to Relentless.
However, this clever piece of chicanery may now turn into something more tangible, as Ampheromine's mailout to THC's members indicates Cristen may purchase the faction in the near future. This might make THC a Relentless subfaction, which suggests that R is looking to strengthen its ranks following their recent slump.
We do not know how the members of THC have reacted to this news yet - the leak came to us indirectly from someone outside of the faction - but either way, it appears big changes could be coming to the Trap House Corporation. When I asked Pops of Relentless about this deal, he seemed to deny that it was anywhere close to being done, and he even went so far as to suggest they may not be interested at all.
"Haven't ironed out any details yet... so for most intents and purposes, no. We probably aren't looking to acquire it."
Cristen's response was even more cryptic.

On reflection, that's not that cryptic. It's looking like THC will be unofficially affiliated to Relentless, but not actually a subfaction or ally. I asked Pops whether R had a policy on factions owned by their members and whether they would war with them if they had to. He offered up the following comments in response:
"[It is] unique to each situation, we could do [war with them] - depends entirely on circumstance. What having a member as a leader / owner of a faction brings to the table, is an open form of dialogue to prevent issues before they arise."
NOW I FEEL DUMB

BOMBER ID CONFIRMED
After much umming and ahhing, it appears that the members of Subversive Alliance and Just Fer Killin are finally united on one issue - Dekloren definitely bombed JFK. Dek seemed to out himself quite overtly in the forums, but for some reason, his own factionmates and victims were desperate to believe otherwise.
Discord screenshots I've seen indicate that both parties have now been convinced of Dek's guilt, although we are as yet unsure what evidence, if any, was used to achieve this turnaround. We are also unsure how this change of opinion will affect their newfound friendly relations, if indeed it will.
What we do know is that JFK is determined to stand tall in the wake of the attack, as they made a point by chaining just 48 hours after the Dirty Bomb went off. My anonymous JFK source had the following to say:
"We're not afraid of DBs and we will not let a DB stop this train. We all chained with -50% stats or worse. Intent was a quick 5k."
JFK's intent is clear, but why did Dekloren set off this Dirty Bomb in the first place? Last week he got in touch with the Times to let us know his thoughts.

420 SALE
Last year's 4/20 event was made even more enjoyable by the generosity of FIDEL-CASTRO, who bucked the trend of seasonal Cannabis price gouging with a sale event offering weed for just $420 a pop. And it appears he's doing the same again this year, which is fantastic news for stoners and convenience store owners everywhere.
"I am once again preparing for another $420 sale. I've started gathering items a few weeks earlier than last year, hoping to have much more cannabis to go around as well as lots more items to give away, all for $420 each. Read my official announcement here. I'm just doing this is a fun way to celebrate 420."
Fidel's bazaar can be accessed via this link when it is open. We will publish a reminder of this sale in the official newspaper article for Cannabis Day in mid-April. And if you're planning any sales or similar Cannabis-themed events for 420 day, please get in touch with the Times for some free promotion!
JACKET LOTTERY
Nathan2005 got in touch with the Times to promote her Bazaar Lottery, where players can enter simply by buying a single item from her store.

Her jackets are going for $100k a pop right now, and she had over 1,200 in stock when last we checked - the original price was $1 million, but it has been reduced due to skepticism over whether it was a scam or not. If Nathan manages to sell all of them, she stands to make over a hundred million dollars in profit. If she fails to sell enough to cover the prize money, she probably won't be able to stand, as people will take her knees.
What say you, good people of Torn City? Shall we all purchase a jacket from Nathan2005 and get her lottery off the ground? You can enter Nathan2005's Jacket Lottery by purchasing one or more jackets from her bazaar, which is linked here.
NOTE: We failed to delete the image above when Nathan2005 changed the jackpot from $100 million to $10 million. To make up for this, the TCT will cover the additional $90 million to ensure the jackpot remains at $10 million.
HOW TO MAKE MONEY

LOWEST RESPECT CHAIN
Last week we speculated that either The Next Level or The Igloo may have been the lowest respect faction to achieve a 25k chain, but neither could be proven, as HoF records of this nature aren't kept. However, we did receive messages from many players attempting to prove that their faction was the lowest.
Clitasaurus of The Igloo shared the image below to show that their faction held just 1.9 million respect when they completed a 25k chain. Although the chain shown below is incomplete and has no date, the numbers appear to add up based on the information we have recorded.

Mysteria wanted us to add that The Igloo's recent 25k chain was achieved while under heavy fire from five other factions. The image supplied below suggests they had over 2 million respect when it was completed, but this may have been inflated due to the number of wars they were fighting at the time.

MonChoon of The Next Level also got in touch to say that they were the 13th highest respect earning faction in February. If true, this means they may have been even lower than we previously thought at the time of their 25k chain, depending on when during the month they achieved the bulk of their respect. Leader Andrew _616 provided the following evidence that his side was at least below 1.9 million when they completed their chain, noting that Torn Stats also tracked them as being around the 1.8 million mark.

Valgys of Impulse believes his faction holds the record, though, as he claims that they racked up a 25k chain at just 1.2 million respect back in 2019. We know for sure that this chain was completed, but we have no supporting evidence which shows the level of respect they had at the time. If anyone has any screenshots, please send them in!

In the meantime, let's hear from 39th Street's Smurf about another interesting statistical record which his side have achieved.
"39th Haka Achieved a chain of 25,000 over the course of 3 days, 2 hours, 32 minutes13-02-2020 18:01:20 to 16-02-2020 20:33:21... That marked all three primary 39th factions having successfully completed 25K chains. Our healers faction doesn't chain. And our newest sub, 39XR isn't full yet."
Will 39th Street be the first to make it to four or even five? It looks likely!
THE IMPOSSIBLE 1337

REVIVE API MODIFIED
If you read the Patch Notes articles or the Suggestions forum, you may have noticed that the API has been modified in order to help revivers. Additional data regarding a target's status is now included on the API, which Kivou suggested should make it easier for revivers to adhere to revive contracts. Relentless' Pops would like to draw your attention to this addition.
"I'd like to highlight to the community about this addition to the API and that revive contract factions need to have their scripts modified to make use of it, or alternatively just use YATA. [The update is already live there and has been since day 1 of implementation] This allows for filters based upon revive contract requirements, such as only online, or only hosp."
Pops says that this change means revivers are no longer able to "spam revives and then log off and get filthy rich off it", adding that Relentless is one of many top factions who will no longer issue revive contracts unless the aforementioned functionality is in place. He also wanted to point out that Kivou is the creator / solo dev on YATA, and noted that he's built a great community tool.
Funny, I thought the biggest community tool was joei.

A NICE STORY?
Cestbon contacted The Times to tell us how his brother, Redsoldier, went to South Africa to purchase some flowers. Sadly, upon his arrival, he realised he didn't have enough money, so he mugged a few tourists to make up the numbers, and subsequently purchased the flowers he wanted.
Shortly afterwards, one of Redsoldier's victims, Vlad199469, contacted his assailant to ask why he'd been mugged. Redsoldier replied with the following:
"Excuse me, I hit you because I have no money to buy flowers."
Isn't that polite! The victim did not respond. However, a few days later, someone gave Redsoldier $1.5 million dollars apropos of nothing. The money came with a note.
"This is the money for you to buy flowers."
Cestbon says that both he and Redsoldier were deeply moved by this act of generosity, especially as vlad199469 does not appear to be rich - he has not even eaten a single Xanax. Redsoldier reportedly gave six people one million dollars each to pay this deed forward - or at least that's what I think he did, the explanation I received was somewhat garbled. Cestbon ends the story by reflecting on what happened in a rather unique way.
"This is what happened. We come from all over the world and trade, exchange, marriage, gambling, racing and leave, mug, hospital in torn city. These may not sound good, but there are always some stupid people who moved us (like Jesus or father). Our lives will come to an end someday, but these fools will always be remembered by me."
Eh?
FFS, AGAIN?

THE D3VL'S IN THE DETAILS
We have received a tipoff that HT has entered the racket business and are using proxies to attack small factions in sector 5. An anonymous faction member spoke to us about their experiences at the hands of HT and their leader, D3vl.
"Yes, I can confirm that D3vl and HT are using proxies to attack other factions (or at least just ours), to my knowledge this is done either to elicit payments to his faction in form of tribute (speculation on my part but something he has mentioned recently after the Xanax lab incident) or in our case to take high-value rackets and have all the income from said rackets funnelled to his main faction."
The anonymous source went on to say that when a REDACTED racket came up in their territory they immediately knew they were in for some trouble. What they didn't expect was that Fluffle, a unicorn-themed faction with just 260,000 respect, would be the faction to try and take it. My source suggests that Fluffle was taken over forcefully by HT and turned into their proxy faction, something made evident when HT members joined their ranks to assault the anonymous faction in question.
"While we did fight back and reportedly made some of the revive faction of HT upset because of our efforts, we decided to negotiate a peace and give up the REDACTED, especially after learning they were planning on taking more of our territory."

Pictured: I guarantee these lot are bronies.
My anonymous source says that their leadership's conversation with D3vl was not pleasant, as he apparently refused to budge during negotiations - either the racket is handed over, or they will take several more territories. DivineLust of Fluffle denied being HT's proxy, however, stating for the record that they are "an individual faction. We have worked with HT, and many others, but we are not a part of the HT family."
D3vl said much of the same, pointing out that the good relations between the two factions stemmed from an agreement they had over a nearby Xanax racket.
"When we decided to go for the Xanax racket we would have to split Fluffle in half if we were to hold it with HT-O. So to avoid doing that to Fluffle I asked them if they were willing to let me bring 20 HT members to fight 99 Covenant members"
According to D3vl, Fluffle's low-level active players bolstered HT's ranks on the wall as his members fought The Covenant. And as a thank you for this help, Fluffle were allowed to hold that particular "high" sector 6 territory, while HT received the racket payouts they fought to gain. D3vl went on to say this was a win-win for both parties, as it meant they didn't have to split Fluffle's territories to sit on that racket.
Does this make Fluffle a proxy? It's hard to say either way. As ever, the territories game is a murky and dangerous business, and the racket business even more so. It seems you can't move an inch in Torn City without spilling someone else's drink.
HILDEGARDE'S HEIR?
Ambitious players in Torn are ten a penny, but those who rise to the very top like the creamiest cream often have something else about them. For many great players, an obsession with data and statistics is key, and that certainly appears to be something one anonymous newcomer had in their locker, if their Google Spreadsheet is anything to go by.

Pictured: Statistically speaking, the person who made these statistics is likely a fan of statistics.
This player believes they are the youngest player to reach the rank of Outstanding by more than two weeks. As you can see from the stats above, they are currently monitoring their close rivals in an attempt to better them in every way possible - all of the data above comes from players who are under 400 days old.
The player in question wasn't interested in bragging or causing any drama, they simply thought that this information would raise an interesting debate over how certain new players play the game. This dedicated individual is actively keeping tabs on their peers in an attempt to out-do them, and if that isn't the sign of a future powerhouse, I don't know what is!

LOWEST RESPECT CHAIN
Last week we speculated that either The Next Level or The Igloo may have been the lowest respect faction to achieve a 25k chain, but neither could be proven, as HoF records of this nature aren't kept.

Eh?
FFS, AGAIN?

Franky has won the lottery again, for the eighteenth time. For context, Covid-19, and R-Kelly 13.
