Bronx Takes URT Summer Title

16th-ranked driver secures title in comprehensive fashion with 15-second lead in final. Full table of prize money and tournament placings revealed. Soybean award winner announced.
Bronx has become the latest owner of a brand new Bugatti Veyron after he clinched the URT Summer title with a dominant win at Stone Park on Sunday. Our champion was ranked 16th going into the tournament, and yet he still managed to hold off no fewer than four top ten drivers in the final to finish with a commanding lead of 15 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

"Unbelievable feeling. Definitely the best achievement in my Torn life. To be able to win against all these elite racers in the final is something special. I was lucky to get through the semis (would have finished 4th if the finish line was a bit further) and it was then when I realised that maybe, just maybe, I have a fighting chance in the final."

The lead was exchanged multiple times in the early stages of the final, but it was around lap seven that Bronx really started to motor. Our soon-to-be-champion lost the lead briefly on lap thirteen but led for the remainder of the race to clinch the coveted Bugatti, in addition to $1 billion in prize money, a Gold Racing Trophy, and the usual competition prizes and ribbons.

"Definitely keeping it [the Bugatti]. No amount of money would replace the honor of owning this car. I will try to get on the global leader board for Convict and Speedway tracks with this car now and get a good position in Winter URT if I manage to qualify."

Bronx has participated in official races for several years now, but he told The Times he only started taking racing seriously this year after he qualified for the Winter Rally URT in January. Bronx finished 28th out of 36 drivers at that tournament, but he went on to show his true ability in the Justice League Tournament later that Spring when he finished third. Bronx believes that this result boosted his racing confidence massively ahead of the Summer URT, and if you'd like to follow in the champion's footsteps, here's an insight into his URT strategy.

"Following the WhatTheFoxSay's guide (RD_'s Racing Guide "2.0") was definitely worth it. It shows the importance of having the right car for each track. Other than that, my strategy was to race throughout the day (but not on the track where URT race took place) and join URT races very late. Worth noting that the URT final was only 78th race where I used Audi R8. So its a relatively fresh car."

Our URT Summer runner-up was our 2019 Champion ChristmasBazaar, who came into the tournament ranked third according to Racing Skill. CB's bid to become the first driver to win back-to-back titles was thwarted by Bronx's superb performance in the final, but he'll be able to console himself with a cool $800 million in prize money, alongside a rare Audi, a Silver Racing Trophy, and the usual prizes and ribbons.

Third place in the Summer URT went to Data, who came in just over two seconds behind ChristmasBazaar. Data is Torn's highest-ranked driver by some considerable margin, with his Racing Skill of 81.1 being 16.2 points ahead of his nearest rival, ToxicMonkeyMZC. Data was considered the favourite this year due to his form in the early rounds, but in the end, he secured a highly respectable third-place, and with it a Racing Coin, $650 million, a Bronze Racing Trophy, and of course, the usual prizes and ribbons.

Our fourth-placed driver was Stormcast, who takes $525 million, with fifth-placed ruler taking $425 million, and sixth-placed JCaine winning $350 million. We also ran a Runner-up final to determine who would place 7th to 12th in the tournament. Nath was the winner of this particular race, with Tyrion coming in second, and Donco coming third. Fourth, fifth and sixth were taken by dunmugmeh, Cheekym0nkey, and NNWS respectively.

The remainder of the tournament's rankings were determined by the drivers' times in the knockout rounds, or how they performed in the Group Stage. When drivers were level on points, they were separated by the number of victories, the number of second-places, and their average position over all six races. If these were all equal, the driver with the lowest RS score was placed higher. Here are the final placings and prizes for all 48 of our participants in this year's Summer Ultimate Racing Tournament:

In addition to the regular prize money, one driver is awarded an additional $100 million as the recipient of the Soybean award. This award is given to a driver who has defied a low Racing Skill score to achieve highly in the tournament. This year, the winner of the Soybean award is Excomantia, who finished in 14th overall, 27 places higher than their Racing Skill of 20.5 suggested they would. Honourable mentions should also go to Kobie, who was ranked last and finished 37th, and dblcork, who was ranked 46th but ended the competition in 32nd place.

All drivers will be paid out their prizes via Church cheques later this week, as will those who took part in our open races over the weekend. The funds for this year's URT were kindly provided by our tournament's sponsor, Shirley Prima Dante Calabrese, aka The Duke. His reasons for funnelling these prizes through the Church are twofold.

First, we at the Torn City Times were given a tipoff earlier this month that a group of muggers planned to target both myself and the drivers as soon as the prizes were given out. To avoid paying the mugger's tax, Don Calabrese kindly agreed to pay the entire prize pool of over $10 billion into the Church where Pastor Williams will distribute the winnings directly - while taking a little admin fee in the name of the good Lord of course.

The second reason for using Church cheques is that The Duke wishes to launder some of the money he's made from the recent coronavirus outbreak. I have it on good authority that Don Calabrese purchased a job lot of face masks on Alibaba last November, and he is currently being investigated by Interpol as a result. The masks he bought later turned out to be props from an erotic movie set in a circus, and have been deemed 100% ineffective at preventing viral transmission.

And so our biggest ever Summer Ultimate Racing Tournament comes to a close. This year we ran more qualifiers than ever before, added a whole new testing phase, and we expanded our main tournament to include 48 drivers in total. We were only able to do this thanks to the dedication and reliability of our outstanding stewarding team. Each and every one of them contributed enormously to the success of the URT, and when a rare mistake was made, another steward was always on hand to take charge of the situation and ensure the tournament went smoothly. Thank you to all of you who helped to steward our testing sessions, qualifiers, and tournament races. And thank you also to Indolent for your provision of some excellent graphics, and to Digger67 for running the Betting House.

We already have plans to improve the tournament ahead of the URT Winter Rally in January, including an official method of steward designation, and the addition of flair to URT races to ensure trolls cannot replicate them. In the meantime, don't forget to enter some of the fantastic player-run tournaments which are advertised all year round in the Racing Forum and the Racing Discord. The Community's enthusiasm for racing seems to grow year on year, and the more people who support these efforts, the more events there will be to participate in.

Thank you again to all of you who took part in the Ultimate Racing Tournament. And congratulations once more to Bronx, our Summer Ultimate Racing Tournament champion.
