Record-breaking 122,045 respect taken from Phoenix Rising after epic raiding battle. Sharkeyfive blamed. Misinformation believed to have played a part in record total. PR owner scammed by temp leader.
Phoenix Rising had nearly 2.4 million respect at the beginning of August. Today, that figure stands at just over 2.2 million thanks to a record-breaking raid initiated by The Wolverines earlier this month. At least it would, if Phoenix Rising still existed.
Less than 24 hours ago, the Phoenix Rising faction was sold and renamed, with all but a few of its members kicked and its history erased. Their troubles began on the 29th of July, when The Wolverines began raiding PR in an assault that would not stop until the 10th of August. During this time, The Wolverines removed 122,045 respect from their rivals, whereas Phoenix Rising only managed a 9,041 respect reduction in response.
At the time, this meant that The Wolverines held the record for the most destructive raid, the most respect removed by an aggressor, and the largest margin of victory in Torn City history. The previous highest raid score was held by JFK, who hit Unrelenting (RIP) for 106,395, with their opponents managing just 38 in return. JFK vs UR also resulted in a victory margin of 106,357, whereas The Wolverines triumphed with a lead of 113,004 over Phoenix Rising.
The combined total of 131,086 respect removed from both sides also beat the old record of 125,849 lost during a fight between UnLeashed and Catalysis. However, just a few days later, Vinerri smashed that figure when they countered a raid by MMCP with a Dirty Bomb strike. And earlier this morning, yet another raid on Vinerri, this time by SMTH, resulted in The Wolverines' total respect score being broken too, with SMTH's 76,613 to 67,236 victory over their opponents resulting in a total of 143,849 respect lost by both sides.
Here are the current top ten most destructive raids as of August 19th, 2020.
NOTE: These are the current names of the factions which completed these raids. They may or may not have been renamed since the raid.
The purists among you might suggest that The Wolverines should still be considered the record-holders for the highest aggressor raid score, given that theirs was achieved entirely through battle, whereas 348,735 of Vinerri's respect damage was due to a Dirty Bomb strike. Either way, The Wolverines can still claim the record for the most damage done through a raid assault at the time of writing, as Vinerri are technically the defenders during their ongoing fight with MMCP.
That being said, The Wolverines' leader, Chronology, told The Times that their record-breaking raid was something of a defensive battle too.
"It feels great to know that we had achieved the top raid score in Torn. Though this thought never crossed our minds as the raid was an entirely defensive move, and just ended up as another goal. (At around 90k on raid score) since there were no signs of negotiations. Sort of like a chain target (hit 5k, and now feel a 10k is proper). Achieved by the moment Wolverines initiated the Raid, We continuously HOSP their online members and left the rest."
The Wolverines' raid was mightily impressive and deserves to be recognised regardless of where it stands in the record books, but how did this record attack come about? It appears that this fight broke out after The Wolverines took umbrage when Phoenix Rising's member Sharkeyfive attacked their young players. He apparently had a problem with one player in particular called AdstaLynx, and Sharkey explains why in the following quote:
"It's a well-known fact that TMB has the hots for me, they like to bait me so I bounty them. Its been going on for ages and no sign of stopping. AdstaLynx decided to place 2 bounties @ 5 mill each on me and leave TMB. He joined Wolverines, I messaged the leader and warned him he was letting trouble in. I told him every hit every bounty the faction placed on me I would repay at 10 to 1. The leader ignored me..."
The Wolverines kicked AdstaLynx when his former TMB leadership role was revealed - a crime many consider equal with bothering a toddler or murdering a puppy - but not before Sharkeyfive had doubled down by bountying Wolverines' young players. Chronology rejects Sharkey's claims that he ignored him, and insists that he tried to prevent the situation from escalating early on.
"When S5 first contacted me, I asked if he could keep it between himself and the specific member, as he was a new recruit and the rest of our members had nothing to do with him or S5. S5's answer was then to bounty The Wolverines lower statted members, Young Wolverines and Balkan Wolverines included."
Sharkeyfive was warned that retaliation would come his way if he continued this behaviour, but he carried on attacking Wolverines' young players anyway. Phoenix Rising were then told by The Wolverines that they must ban Sharkeyfive from the faction and that all of their members must place a $1 million bounty on him too. Phoenix Rising refused and were subsequently raided hard by The Wolverines.
This behaviour surprised many, as attacking a rival's faction and employees is a tactic used by Sharkeyfive, and is not known as the modus operandi of The Wolverines. Gux-, one of The Wolverines' leadership team, explained that their use of such tactics represented a "crusade against an individual actively bountying new players, potentially culling them from the game, simply to get at their true enemy."
The following message from Gux- to PR's leader, SoftRising, further explains why The Wolverines decided to give Sharkeyfive a taste of his own medicine.
"We decided to employ Sharkey’s own tactics against him and raided you. We had hoped that by stooping to Sharkey’s level, we may be able to highlight to him that vendettas should only include those actively involved – not faction mates, spouses, work colleagues, etc."
"We had hoped this would be a short term thing, allowing us to try raiding mechanics and teach Sharkey a lesson. We have approached your leadership with some terms, mainly the permanent ousting of a poisonous player but also asking you each to place one bounty to support the message that Sharkey should target only those he has a vendetta with, not an innocent."

Pictured: I couldn't think how to illustrate a vendetta, so here is a picture of a Vienetta instead.
Reports in the forums seemed to indicate that Sharkeyfive was actually kicked out of PR before the raiding began, but SoftRising told The Times that this wasn't the case, as he left of his own volition.
"Sharky5 voluntarily left PR prior to The Wolverines raiding or mentioning a raid - my understanding is he does this often when he starts stirring s**t up to avoid situations like this... ultimately sharky5 won this raid. PR lost huge respect and while Chrono was kind enough to not publicise it as I requested, I’m now willing to admit that part of our peace agreement was a 1bil settlement. I paid this out of my own vault, the faction vault is untouched."
Chronology claims that several attempts at peace were made by his side before their record-breaking raid was completed. He says that their offers were either rejected or ignored, with Phoenix Rising's rank and file members being the only ones to reach out and ask when the raid was going to end. SoftRising counter-claimed by saying her side was baited by fake offers for peace, and that it was wrong of The Wolverines to continue attacking after Sharkeyfive had left - something they reportedly did due to PR's members being caught selling bounty slots to Sharkeyfive. SoftRising does not deny that this took place.
"I never saw sharkey recruit bounty slots in faction chat nor knew this was common for PR, but I’m sure there must have been some of our 80+members who sold bountyslots. Certainly not a feature of PR though sharkey bought slots from everyone, and Larrystooge of Balkan wolverines actively tried to sell me his 600 bounty slots to hit his own faction, and asked me to vouch for him to sharkey."
"Wolves leadership knows this, so I find any mention of this Raid being deserved due to a minority of us potentially selling bountyslots utterly absurd, because they endorse doing it on their own members. (When Larry offered me his services I refused)."
Sharkeyfive told The Times that AdstaLynx was also partially responsible for some of the bounties placed on The Wolverines, and he further accuses him of bountying both himself, his co-workers, and Phoenix Rising. In the middle of all this, SoftRising claimed to have messages from Gux- admitting PR were innocent and did not deserve the hit. From the outside, it does look like Phoenix Rising were punished unjustly for the behaviour and reputation of Sharkeyfive.

However, this conclusion ignores the fact that Phoenix Rising were more than ready to war with The Wolverines over this incident. During our interview, SoftRising revealed that Bodybagger had been hired by PR to make 10 hits a day during this conflict, a fact which backs up Chronology's claim that Phoenix Rising rejected his initial peace talks and were willing to put up a fight.

Pictured: SoftRising's failed attempt to release this information anonymously.
While the initial reason for The Wolverines' attack upon Phoenix Rising seems harsh, the willingness of PR to go to war over one member means they cannot be seen entirely as victims. Despite this, SoftRising still believes that the attack was unjust due to the fact that Sharkeyfive was not present when most of the raiding took place. But if we can put conjecture to one side for a moment, none of this really explains why this dispute turned into a record-breaking raid.
The following quote by SoftRising reveals precisely why that happened.
"Something we learnt as a faction though is what it actually means to be in PR. If it’s your home, you’re family, and no one else gets to force you out. (The mass kick was a poor calculation by other leadership based on tornwiki being down, and misinformation that raids auto ended if faction had less than 10 people. I believe the intent was to kick to 10 people and then immediately reinvite them when we had reset the raid, except the raid didn’t reset..."
This quote will come back to bite SoftRising on the a**e later in this article. But first, let's focus on the mass-kick SoftRising mentioned, which refers to an incident where most of the faction's members were booted temporarily. It was thought that an old raiding rule was still in effect whereby a faction of fewer than 10 players could not fight in a raid and that reducing your numbers below 10 would automatically end your enemy's attack. I asked for clarification on this from Chedburn, who gave me the following comment on the matter:
"Nope never been the case afaik. You can only START a raid if you have at least 10 members. If the opponent has fewer than 10 members, you can cease the raid even if you're losing. You can only cease the war if the OTHER faction falls below 10 members."
By reducing their membership to fewer than 10, Phoenix Rising did nothing but give The Wolverines the ability to cease the raid - something they were unlikely to do until they'd eaten their fill. And eat their fill they did, as with their opponents now weakened by their own hand / wing / whatever a Phoenix has, there was nothing to stop The Wolverines from devouring their prey.

Pictured: Phoenix meat, probably.
But PR weren't the only ones dealing with false information. Due to the Torn Wiki being down, some Wolverines' members were unaware that a raid only reduces your opponents' respect, and erroneously thought that the 120k they took from PR would be applied to their faction's respect score. Gux- admitted this was the case, and explained that because his faction hadn't raided before, some of their members assumed it relied upon a similar mechanic to chaining.
How much this misinformation contributed to their record-breaking score is debatable, however, as Chronology asserts:
"I believe that is true as to the notion on newer players (Green Leafs) and a few of those not socially active as others. For the most part, everyone had a good idea of how a Raid worked, but until actually doing so was just an assumption. And others were just confused if raid targets added to + respect to the chain while also taking the - from PR. but I couldn't be more proud of all our fierce Wolverine family. They are all a great bunch and through our teamwork and work ethic, conquered our common goal. Even more so if they 'had no idea what they were doing' but that's not the case."
A post by Softrising on August 10th announced the existence of a peace treaty between the two sides, told Sharkeyfive he was welcome back if he ended his grudge, and called for Phoenix Rising's 80+ members to return to the faction. Their membership tally stood at 38 when I checked earlier this week, but this morning I was shocked to discover that Phoenix Rising was no more, with the faction having been renamed to Atlas Society, a group currently led by MrSands.

MrSands reportedly bought Phoenix Rising from SoftRising of $20bn, despite it not being his to sell - an incident which led to the revelation that SR is a man, not that this matters. A player called Chieftain was supposedly the real owner of PR according to one forum poster, but we are yet to discern whether MrSands knew this before he purchased the faction. What we do know is that he is well aware of this fact now, and he is currently trying and failing to convince the community that his purchase was legitimate.
When last we checked, SoftRising had been hospitalised by tinytown, the true leader of Phoenix Rising who had been installed to protect the faction by its owner. This is a sad end to this story indeed, with Phoenix Rising's members first suffering due to the actions of Sharkeyfive and AdstaLynx, and now losing their entire faction thanks to the duplicitous nature of SoftRising. tinytown reveals his feelings on the matter below:
"It was left in my hands to keep safe. People use real-life money to make their Torn life more fun and give them a leg up. I never would have sold this faction for that reason. I have had control of this faction for years, but knew it always belonged to someone else. As far as the Wolves, their main goal was PRs destruction. In the end, they got their wish. Then they have the audacity to try to recruit myself as well as others in the process."
"As far as rebuilding, unfortunately, that will not be happening with me, PR members are the best, we were a strong knit family and if they ever needed anything, I will be the first one to jump in. As far as SoftRising, he did sell this faction on his own, but, my question is, his NW is only 5 bil, so, where did the 20 bil go? His multi? Don't know, Softrising seems to be MIA. As far as how much I blame Sharkeyfive for this, I don't.....he will and always will be a friend to me."
MrSands doesn't appear to have any interest in giving back the faction to its rightful owner and pursuing SoftRising for his $20bn back. He also seems to have no sympathy for PR's members, as he kicked the vast majority of those who had returned earlier today. He has promised to let those with close to 1,000 days there come back to finish their tenure for the merit, but that appears to be the limit of MrSands' generosity.
Unless some of their former members can club together and raise an eleven-figure sum, it appears that the Phoenix may have risen for the very last time.
