1st place player extends lead. Top three pull away from the rest of the pack. New record 10% cutoff predicted. Duke set to release tags imminently.
With just over a week left of Dog Tags 2020, it appears we may already have a winner, as our first-placed player has extended their lead to more than 10,000 points since last we checked. Here are the top ten scores which were correct as of 14:30 TCT today. Previous positions on the 9th of November are listed in brackets.

DOG TAG STANDINGS

1st (1st) - 33,666 points - 1,004 tags
2nd (2nd) - 22,314 points - 605 tags
3rd (3rd) - 19,772 points - 498 tags
4th (10th) - 15,340 points - 483 tags
5th (6th) - 13,558 points - 612 tags
6th (9th) - 12,777 points - 335 tags
7th (?) - 12,563 points - 571 tags
8th (4th) - 11,536 points - 345 tags
9th (?) - 10,842 points - 373 tags
10th (5th) - 10,719 points - 365 tags

The players whose former positions are marked with a question mark were outside the top ten when last we checked the standings. As you can see, the lead between first and second has grown from just over 3,000 to 11,352 points during the past eight days. The second and third-placed players have also pulled away, with figures of 2,542 and 4,432 both marking an increase on their previous gaps to third and fourth respectively.

The most significant movement outside the top three is our current fourth-place player, who has climbed up from 10th by gaining an additional 8,621 points from 304 extra tags since the 9th of November. The players who were in 7th and 8th place have now dropped out of the top ten altogether, with newcomers in 7th and 9th entering in their place.

Based on the updated figures, we remain confident that this year's first-place will beat the previous record of 42,682 points held by Penicillin. Our current leader's score of 33,666 points is 3,921 higher than Penicillin had on the 18th of November last year. Furthermore, while Penicillin had 877 tags at roughly the same stage in 2019, this year's top tagger has secured their score with a much higher haul of 1,004 tags, meaning their lead is well protected by lots of low-value tags should attackers come knocking.

One prediction we have had to revise, however, is the minimum total score you will require to gain 10 competition tokens. To achieve this, players must finish in the top 10% of all taggers based on your score, which in 2019 meant you needed a minimum of 727 points. Based on this year's figures, we estimated that 764 points would be needed this time around. Boy, were we wrong!

Top 10% Minimum: 996 points

996 is a huge increase on the previous year, and it is extremely rare for this score to go down as the tournament progresses, meaning it is almost certain to top 1,000 points before Dog Tags 2020 is over. We will give you another update on this figure in our final score update on Monday the 23rd of November, 48-hours before the Dog Tag competition ends.

The reason we're seeing such high figures is that we have more heavily active participants than ever before. The number of taggers has risen from 25,208 last week to 31,537 today, and while this figure is lower than the 32,432 participants we had at the same stage in 2019, the number of tags stolen overall is higher. 419,003 tags have been stolen so far this year, compared to 409,167 by the 18th last year.

For comparison, 511,147 tags were stolen over the course of the 2019 edition with 36,187 people taking part. Both of these figures represented new Torn records, and it looks likely we may see both of these broken again this year. Our chance of seeing new high scores will be further bolstered by the number of tags players choose to return. We've had 4,148 tags sent back so far, compared to 1,661 last week.

And speaking of returned tags, it is expected that Duke will release another batch of his own tags back to their rightful owners later this evening.
