Find out how you can put the Slash Wednesday event to good use this week! UPDATE: Player suggestions added.
The event known as Slash Wednesday returns to Torn City this week. Beginning at noon on Tuesday the 8th and ending at the same time on Thursday the 10th, all hospital patients will receive a 75% reduction in their treatment time. For example, if you lose a fight to a player, you will now only become hospitalised for roughly 7 minutes, compared to the usual treatment time of 28 minutes.
Slash Wednesday remains something of an enigma within the Torn community, as many are unsure how to make use of the event. We've come up with a few ideas below based on previous years' activities, but if you have any thoughts of your own, please send them to Sugarvalves today. Anyone whose ideas are published will receive a Donator Pack. Here are a few of our suggestions:
SURPRISE ATTACK
Slash Wednesday is the perfect time to wage war due to the reduction in potential revive costs. A hospitalised player would usually remain in care for 4 hours 40 minutes, but this will be dropped down to 1 hour 10 minutes during this event. As a result, hospitalised players will need fewer medical items to release themselves from the hospital, which in turn means your fighters will reach their medical cooldown limit much later than usual. Mary adds that jumping and medding out for wall hits is more effective than usual, meaning that both real and farm wars are able to enjoy more activity.
This will also be true for your opponent, who will also be able to return to the battlefield as quickly as you can. To make the most of your advantage, timing your Slash Wednesday assault will be key. It may be that you need to attack your opponent as soon as Slash Wednesday begins, to ensure they are too decimated to retaliate. Or, alternatively, you could time your attack towards the end of the event, so that by the time they are able to respond, Slash Wednesday has ended.
CHAINING
Various forms of faction attack are possible during this event. TheUnfortunet points out that chaining is easier due to the swift return of your opponents to the battlefield - something that's especially useful for new players hitting inactives. Dradonus of We Are Reviving told The Times that they are using Slash Wednesday to chain easier, with Slash Wednesday marking their final attempt at a 5k - having already achieved one this weekend - before taking Christmas off.
"With most players under 15, or just at the 15 mark, many of them hit Baldr's list of targets. Sometimes, however, many of them are already hospitalized due to other hitting them frequently. We want to take advantage of the reduced hospital times to make it easier for those that use Baldr's list with the reduction of hospital times. This also helps our veteran players hit their more valuable targets more often."
SLUTTING
Andyman suggests that sluts will have a great time on Slash Wednesday, as these players won't have to use as many meds as usual to get out of the hospital. Slutting is the art of deliberately losing to other players for money, and while your client won't usually hospitalise you during such a transaction, leaving you in the street still leaves you laid up for nearly half an hour. Or at least it would do, on any other day. As we mentioned at the top of the article, losing a fight on this day drops your time in hospital to just seven minutes.
STALK BAZAARS
Bazaar owners are known to use Small Explosive Devices wrapped inside a parcel to self-hospitalise themselves when their bazaar is open, as this protects them from buy-mugging if they are away from their device. The typical duration of an SED self-hosp is 5 hours, but this is reduced to 1.25 hours, or 1hr 15 minutes on Slash Wednesday. Likewise, using the wrong bloods will now only give you roughly 15 minutes in the hospital instead of an hour.
Will every bazaar owner have realised this? Chances are that they haven't. If you're an unscrupulous buy-mugger, or you're simply an opportunist, Slash Wednesday may be the perfect time to relieve sellers of their profits when they emerge from the hospital earlier than expected. Remember, if you didn't buy from them in the first place, you're not technically a buy-mugger.
COMMIT CRIMES
Slash Wednesday is a great time to commit a number of dangerous crimes, as those with red hospitalisation results won't send you to the infirmary for as long as usual. Whereas a failed Warehouse Arson would usually see you hospitalised for 4-7 hours, this will be reduced on SW to between 1-1.75 hours.
Suckemup points out that factions can use this event to plan dangerous organised crimes as a too, by using this event to experiment and reduce hospital time in case of failures.
OVERDOSE
There's never a good time to overdose, but if you're going to do it, Slash Wednesday is the least harmful time. An overdose on Xanax will typically land you in the hospital for three and a half days, but that will be reduced to around 21 hours during Slash Wednesday.
LEVEL UP
Last year, a player called CockyNudist invited players to join his faction, The P-Team, with the sole aim of seeing it destroyed. He noted that leaving someone on the street after an attack would see players receive only four to six minutes of hospital time during Slash Wednesday, and this could be reduced even further with the Fortitude upgrade branch.
CockyNudist invited Punchbag players with a high level and weak stats to join his faction, with everyone else invited to attack The P-Team members in order to level up. The faction wasn't destroyed on Slash Wednesday and was only killed off several days later on the 14th of December. Nevertheless, this unique take on SW shows that there are plenty of interesting ways you can use the event, most of which involve spoiling someone else's day.
ATTACKING MISSIONS
Andyman pointed out that many of Duke's mission targets - players who have been inactive for a long period of time - are often unrevivable. If you are assigned one of these players by a mission, you must wait for them to emerge from the hospital naturally before attacking them. However, on Slash Wednesday, these players will emerge from the hospital much quicker than usual, allow more players to perform these missions.
Roadoilers adds that this is also a good time to hit powerful mission targets that are too strong for you to take down in a single attack. Slash Wednesday allows you the time to attack and revive yourself after being defeated multiple times before the target is able to recover their lost health.
TARGET NPCs
Another suggestion from Andyman is that NPCs will be left in the hospital for a shorter period than usual after being group attacked and looted. Some players may not realise this, so Slash Wednesday may provide you with a chance to loot the NPCs with less competition. However, since NPCs leave the hospital at loot level 1, the rewards for performing this action will be low - and you may even be targeted by those who were waiting for their loot level to rise.
GAIN MERITS
TheUnfortunet suggests that the merit for being in the hospital 250 times is something to aim for on SW, especially if you're already selling losses. They also mentioned that the merit Phoenix is easier on this day, as this one requires you to defeat someone after losing to them up to 10 minutes ago, something you can now do without using medical items.
CLAIM BOUNTIES
Another great idea from TheUnfortunet which was also suggested by fire-fly is that you can hoover up multiple bounties from the same player. Suckemup adds that players could even organise bounties to make the most of this advantage. Furthermore, PreSence suggests that those with bounties on their head may wish to attract attackers to clear them while the hospital penalties remain low.
HIT ABSENT PLAYERS
Bodowntown believes this is the best time to farm the AFK (absent from keyboard) players that everyone has on their hit list. He thinks you should hit your seven highest respect targets and cycle through them, before returning to the first one and repeating the process.
USE FORTITUDE
It is worth noting that the maxed-out Fortitude tree in the faction special system will reduce hospital times by an additional 25%. This special does not combine with the 75% Slash Wednesday reduction to give you 100% less hospital time, rather, the two values are applied consecutively to the hospital time you would have received.
For example, a 4 hour stay in hospital becomes a 1 hour stay on Slash Wednesday when a 75% reduction is applied. Under Fortitude, a further 25% reduction gives you a final hospital time of 45 minutes, as 25% of 60 is 15. For quick and easy calculations, any players with the full 25% reduction provided by Fortitude will only stay in the hospital for 18.75% of the usual time during Slash Wednesday.
TRAVEL ABROAD
Being attacked while abroad is always a painful experience, as if you're stuck without medical items, you face a long wait in a foreign hospital before you can even fly home. If this is a risk you face often, PreSence says that the lower hospital times mean you may enjoy a comfier state of mind while waiting for foreign items to be restocked during Slash Wednesday.
USE A BOOK
Medical Degree Schmedical Degree is a book which halves all hospital times. If you use this during Slash Wednesday, your hospital times will be reduced to 12.5% of their usual length. Any of the suggested activities above would therefore be even more worthwhile under the influence of this book. When combined with Slash Wednesday and the full branch of Fortitude, players will receive just 9.375% of their usual hospitalisation time.
ENTER GLOBAL
PreSence sent over several suggestions, many of which may be tongue in cheek, yet still contain a nugget of truth. They suggested that making your presence known in Global is less dangerous than usual, as the prospect of long-term hospitalisation is now reduced.
GAMBLE MORE
AFC and several others pointed out that Slash Wednesday means you can get back to playing Russian Roulette much faster after shooting yourself in the foot. Similarly, the effects of being kicked in the throat by Leslie are lessened, so why not give the old coot's wheel a spin?
tl;dr: All hospitalisations will be reduced by 75% from noon 8th December - noon 10th December.
ADDENDUM - SED STACKING
A post by Withlove three months ago revealed that players under the influence of the aforementioned book, Medical Degree Schmedical Degree, would not see the 50% reduction applied to all incoming hospitalisation events. While your first SED would see you hospitalised for 2.5 hours - half the usual 5 hour time - additional SEDs would be applied to your overall hospitalisation time, as shown by Proxima's calculations below:
SED 1: 5hrs * 50% = 2.5hrs
SED 2: (2.5hrs + 5hrs) * 50% = 3.75hrs
SED 3: (3.75hrs + 5hrs) * 50% = 4.375hrs
However, that system was deemed illogical and has now been changed. Only newly added hospital time is now affected by hospital reduction bonuses, not previously calculated hospital time. This change results in the following amended calculations for SED stacking.
SED 1: 5hrs * 50% = 2.5hrs
SED 2: 2.5hrs + (2.5hrs * 50%) = 5hrs
SED 3: 5hrs + (2.5hrs * 50%) = 7.5hrs
Obviously, these calculations don't take into account the additional impact of Slash Wednesday or any faction specials. Here's how those combinations work on Slash Wednesday.
Slash Wednesday Only
SED 1: 5hrs * 25% = 1.25hrs
SED 2: 1.25hrs + (5hrs * 25%) = 2.5hrs
SED 3: 2.5hrs + (5hrs * 25%) = 3.75hrs
Slash Wednesday Plus Fortitude Max
SED 1: 5hrs * 25% * 75% = 0.9375hrs
SED 2: 0.93hrs + (5hrs * 25% * 75%) = 1.875hrs
SED 3: 1.875hrs + (5hrs * 25% * 75%) = 2.8125hrs
Slash Wednesday Plus Fortitude Max Plus Book
SED 1: 5hrs * 25% * 75% * 50 = 0.46875hrs
SED 2: 0.46875hrs + (5hrs * 25% * 75% * 50%) = 0.9375hrs
SED 3: 0.9375hrs + (5hrs * 25% * 75% *50%) = 1.40625hrs
