Early Discharge System Modified

Find out what "excessive outside hits" mean in the context of the latest tweaks to the medical system.
Torn's Early Discharge system has received a small tweak two weeks after its release, with Chedburn's latest Patch List describing the change as follows:

Changed Early Discharge to only become available after the faction has first received excessive outside hits.

The definition of "excessive outside hits" is simple. Early Discharge will kick in when the number of outside hits made within the past 24 hours matches or exceeds the number of people in your faction at the time of the attack. The only caveat to this is that factions with fewer than 20 members still have to receive a minimum of 20 outside hits for ED to trigger, regardless of whether you're a 1 man, 10 man, or 19 man faction.

For example, if the Wonderful Egg Boys have 40 members, but only 39 outside hits have been made against them within the past 24 hours, Early Discharge will not have triggered for any of them. However, upon the 40th outside hit being made, Early Discharge will become available for the player who was attacked.

Early Discharge will then kick in for any further faction members who are subsequently attacked by outside hitters, provided there have been enough outside hits made within the rolling 24-hour window when the attack is made. It is important to note that if the number of faction members changes during this period then your Early Discharge eligibility will be affected.

If, for example, someone joins the Wonderful Egg Boys and increases their total from 40 to 41 members during the 24-hour window, they would need to receive 41 outside hits for Early Discharge to kick in. Conversely, if the Wonderful Egg Boys were to drop to 39 members, their outside hit requirement also drops by one. Early Discharge is not applied retrospectively, it only triggers upon new attacks being made, so ED would only kick in with the next outside hit, regardless of how many faction members you've lost.

The basic aim of this system is to ensure that abuse of the Early Discharge mechanic is no longer worthwhile, thus allowing ED to continue to benefit those who are disproportionately targeted by outside hitters. It is expected that this latest change will prevent Early Discharge from interfering in large-scale extra-factional events such as Elimination. If it doesn't, the parameters of Early Discharge can easily be optimised to suit our requirements.

The introduction of these additional mechanics may seem complex, but they are not something many people will ever need to concern themselves about. Early Discharge is intended as a complex solution to a complicated problem, but most players will never need to think about its existence unless they are targeted by a number of orchestrated, outside hitters.
