Find out how you can combine faction upgrades, company specials, and books with the St Patrick's Day event to gain the most nerve possible.
Hey kids, are you ready to get s**tfaced? Good, because from noon on the 16th of March through to noon on the 18th, all alcohol will provide twice as much nerve as usual. And in addition to this bonus, all citizens have a small chance to receive a free bottle of 5 nerve Green Stout via the City Map during this time!

Pictured: Drink this, pinch your nose, and don't ask questions.
Until last year it was a Torn City tradition that our region's waterways were dyed green every March to celebrate St Patrick's Day. This dye contains a chemical ingredient known as Citiusebriusetium, a name derived from a Latin phrase meaning "Get Drunk Quicker". The Torn City authorities may not be educated enough to know Latin, but they do possess the ability to slot random words into Google Translate.
Citiusebriusetium has the effect of making you twice as susceptible to the effects of alcohol. As a result, whenever our waterways were dyed green between the 16th and 18th of March, the whole city would descend into a drunken stupour thanks to the combination of our viridescent water supply and widespread binge drinking.
"Readers should not confuse the water near the nuclear power plant in Sector 7, which is always green, with the green water associated with this festive event. The green water near the nuclear power plant has been associated with a medical condition known as hot dog fingers." - Penicillin
Over 20,000 bottles of Green Stout were handed out during last year's event, with this item set to spawn once more at various locations across Torn for 48 hours starting at noon on the 16th. The huge quantity of Green Stout traditionally imbibed during St Patrick's means that Citiusebriusetium will find its own route into the water supply this year when it is naturally expelled by a legion of incontinent drunkards.
Consequently, the city's rivers, brooks, streams, and tributaries will change hue of their own volition this St Patrick's Day, thanks to copious quantities of luminous, emerald piss.

How To Use St Patrick's Day
Now that we've got that convoluted explanation out of the way, you're probably wondering how you can use St Patrick's Day effectively. The first thing you can do is to persuade your faction to reset your faction upgrades to Voracity, as this will enable your members to gain double the usual booster cooldown. And if you have the alcohol secondary tree unlocked, you can also gain an additional 50% boost to the nerve that booze provides.
"Faction leaders not at war during the event should definitely encourage their members to go into the St. Patrick's Day event with a zero-booster cooldown and have the alcohol branch unlocked for the event." - Andyman
g_ho points out that faction upgrades take 100 hours to set, and with St Patrick's starting at noon on the 16th, this means you probably should've started doing this yesterday. But don't fret, for there is still time to act! And if your faction doesn't have Voracity unlocked, there are plenty of other ways you can gain extra nerve this St Patrick's Day.
Boost Those Boosts
The temporary double nerve boost produced by St Patrick's Day can be combined with other bonuses earned from companies, books, and faction specials to make alcohol even more effective during this event. These bonuses are multiplicative, which should make it extremely simple to work out how much nerve you'll earn from one single bottle. Let's use Green Stout as an example, shall we? YES!
Base Green Stout = 5 nerve
Green Stout on St Patrick's = 10 nerve
(5 x 2)
Green Stout / St Pats / Voracity = 15 nerve
(5 x 2 x 1.5)
Green Stout / St Pats / Voracity / Pub = 22.5 nerve
(5 x 2 x 1.5 x 1.5)
Green Stout / St Pats / Voracity / Pub / Book = 45 nerve
(5 x 2 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 2)
Please note that the figures above make several assumptions and are rounded for yourpleasure convenience. First of all, the Voracity multiplier of 1.5 references the maximum 50% boost one can achieve if your faction has the entire secondary tree for Alcohol unlocked. If, for example, you only have 4 upgrades of this tree unlocked, this figure would change to 1.2 (20%).
The pub multiplier of 1.5 requires you to work in a 7-star boozer or higher to take advantage of the Lightweight special that gives a 50% boost to booze. You must change this figure to 1.1 if you are working at a 7-star Grocery Store and are thus able to use the 10% consumable boost found under the Absorption special.
The Book to which we are referring is Get Drunk and Lose Dignity, which doubles alcohol nerve provisions for 31 days. There are other books, faction specials, and company specials that are also useful during St Patrick's Day, but the optimum combination shown above will gain you the most nerve from one single serving of 5 nerve liquor. If you don't have Green Stout, then use Moonshine or Christmas Spirit as a replacement, as both of these are 5 nerve too.
Over the course of 24 hours, a typical player can drink 25 (24+1) bottles of alcohol thanks to the base 24-hour cooldown. If your faction has the secondary Alcohol tree active then you must also have the main tree bonus in effect which provides double your usual cooldown limit. You can therefore drink 49 (48+1) alcohol items in 24 hours, and when used in conjunction with the aforementioned optimum combination, we have calculated that the maximum nerve it is possible to gain is 2,205 (45 x 49).
My working out for various combinations of cooldown bonuses and consumable boosts can be found in the link below. The closest we came outside of this combination is when we replaced the Get Drunk and Lose Dignity book with Self Control is For Losers, swapping out the doubled alcohol effects with a halved cooldown for a total nerve of 2,182 (97 x 22.5).
TABLE OF WORKINGS
This table shows us the best combinations of company, book, and faction specials. With four days to go until St Patrick's Day, you still have time to switch companies if you wish to take advantage of the Pub or Mining Corp specials. And if you don't have enough 5 nerve alcohol then you'll still gain excellent results through the use of 4 or 3 nerve booze instead. However, whichever path you take, don't expect your results to be exactly as we have calculated them, for there is a caveat to all this.
The Range
The calculations above use whole numbers to make everyone's lives easier, but the truth is that the nerve gained from any one item can vary by roughly half a nerve point on either side. For example, if you're drinking 5 nerve alcohol, the random number generator will give you a value of between 4.51 and 5.49 each time. You won't notice this when using alcohol without bonuses as these values are always rounded up or down upon use.
However, when bonuses are applied, these hidden discrepancies become magnified and can lead to confusion when people do not receive the statistical outcome they expected. For example, if you receive 4.51 nerve from Green Stout and this was drunk on St Patrick's Day, the 2x bonus means your final value of 9.02 would be rounded down to 9 nerve. If you receive a value of 4.75 or higher, this would be rounded up to 10 nerve.
A guide written by the now-fedded Audemars with help from the non-fedded Cloudjumper and Maledict explores the full range of mathematical outcomes in detail. As you'll see, the outcome for someone drinking 5 nerve booze on St Patrick's Day while using the optimum combination of boosts ranges from 41 (40.59) through to 49 (49.41).
Let's say you have the 48-hour consumable cooldown and you're adding 1 hour CD per bottle, and you consume your full complement of 49 bottles of 5 nerve booze. Whereas our nice round-number table says you'll get precisely 2,205 nerve over the course of a day, the results you can actually receive range from a minimum of 1,989 nerve if you're extremely unlucky, and a maximum of 2,421 nerve if you have recently consumed a barrel full of rabbit's feet.
Other Useful Boosts
Most people won't be able to take advantage of the most optimum combination of boosts, but that doesn't mean you can't get fully arseholed this St Patrick's Day. Here are some of the other useful boosts that can be found in Torn City which are applicable to this event. If we've missed any out, please let Sugarvalves know!
Factions
If your faction only has the main Voracity tree unlocked, this will still provide you with a useful boost in the form of 24 hours extra cooldown. This boost increases the number of alcohol items you can drink in a 24 hour period from 25 to 49 (48 hours plus one over).
Elsewhere, the Criminality main tree will give you a 25% increase in Crime Skill and Experience. You'll likely be using your extra nerve to commit crimes this St Patrick's Day, and this tree allows you to make the most of it. There are also several useful boosts found via Criminality's secondary, tertiary, and quaternary trees, with the pick of the bunch being an increase of up to 40 in maximum nerve.
Companies
Grocery Store employees have it made when it comes to St Patrick's Day. In addition to the aforementioned Absorption special that provides a 10% consumable boost at 7-stars, there is also the 5-star Bottled Up special which gives you a free bottle of booze in exchange for five job points. More importantly, a 10% consumable cooldown reduction comes as a passive bonus for any company above 3-stars thanks to the Fast Metabolism special.
Additional cooldown reductions can be found elsewhere too. The 10* Restaurant will give you a 25% reduction to all consumable cooldowns, whereas the Mining Corp 3-star special provides a specific 30% cooldown reduction to alcohol items only. This means that each bottle of booze adds 42 minutes to your cooldown instead of 60, and when combined with the Voracity special, this allows you to drink 69 in 24 hours before reaching your limit.
Other useful specials can be found at the Amusement Park, with the 1-star special allowing you to swap 2 nerve for one job point, and the 5-star special providing a passive 10+ boost to your maximum nerve bar. Meat Warehouses are also handy places to work, as their recently added 3* special reduces failed crime experience penalties by 50%, in addition to the provision of 2 nerve for one job point.
There are various other companies that offer nerve in exchange for job points, and we recommend using these to bulk out your nerve if you find that the random number generator does not favour you this St Patrick's Day.
Books
If you don't have a copy of Get Drunk and Lose Dignity to hand, but this was the last book you used, then a copy of Memories and Mammaries is equally useful. This book repeats the effects of the last book you read, so if you've timed your book use poorly, use this one to cover up your mistake.
Self Control Is For Losers is another useful tome, as it decreases all consumable cooldowns by 50% for 31 days. This book effectively mirrors the effects of the Voracity faction tree in a different way, meaning you could feasibly consume 97 bottles of booze in one day with both of these active. This figure increases to 138 if you have the Mining Corp special involved too.

Pictured: 138 bottles of booze on the wall, 138 bottles of booze. Take one down, pass it around, and that's how Covid spreads about town.
The Real Dutch Courage is another handy book, as it gives you double your usual nerve regen for 31 days. This would come in handy if you are likely to run out of booze supplies. The Hamburglar's Guide to Crime is far more useful though, as this book will increase the crime skill and exp gained from crimes by 25%. Given the number of offences you are likely to commit during St Patrick's Day, a book like this could make a huge difference to your criminal abilities.
Additional Notes
Andyman notes that premium alcohol can be very expensive to consume, and rarely pay for themselves with the proceeds of crime - especially for new players. During Christmas Town, he suggests players should spend CT buck son Glasses of Beer from the Beer Tent for use during St Patrick's, as these 2 nerve items are the equivalent of Kandy Kane or Pumpkin Brew.
"Though, premium alcohol can certainly be worth drinking while in a +7-star Pub and on an alcohol book; especially if you're on the bubble of being in a PA team and sharing in those sweet, sweet PA splits." - Andyman
