With the war between these two behemoths now seemingly over, we hear from the top brass as to how this war went down, why it lasted so long, and why it ended in a crushing defeat for SA
Natural Selection has been taking territories from Subversive Alliance on an almost daily basis for the past month. Yesterday, the 22nd, was the first day in nearly two weeks without a territorial fight between the two factions. It appears that this long-awaited war is finally over, and the result could not have been more comprehensive.

The territorial side of this war began at CUG on March 30th with a successful assault by Natural Selection. It ended with another NS victory over SA at RCE. Over the course of the entire war, the territorial score between the two sides is 24-3 in favour of successful assaults by Natural Selection.
These figures become even more damning when you discover that the three doesn't refer to Subversive Alliance victories, but successful NS defends against SA attacks. That's 26 direct fights between the two factions over the course of nearly a month, and every single one has ended with a Natural Selection victory.

The Long, Slow Death
At the time of writing, Subversive Alliance has no territorial holdings of which to speak, having been forced out of the high-value Docks territories they themselves took from the DA factions earlier this year. Natural Selection now runs this area, and in the wake of such a brutally one-sided fight, there are many questions to be asked. The first being, why did it drag on when the result was already a foregone conclusion.
"We are having too much fun to stop this war. Continuing a war is easy when you are winning, however, we never take anything for granted." -
Those comments were made by NS leader Stretch on the 12th. Going into this fight, Stretch says his side was apprehensive, given that SA has the highest battle stats. They expected an intense battle that would swing back and forth, but that didn't happen, and he described the opening salvos of the war as a one-sided affair.
"SA just didn't show up as expected. We don't know whether it was too many inactive vets, leadership problems, or some other reason. SA was just not at the top of their game during these battles. They are a fierce group and will show that moving forward we are sure."
NS2's SpeedSkateR commented that several members of NS were able to hit well above their stats by simply knowing how to roll and stack boosters. She added that high stats don't mean anything if you don't have the activity or proper knowledge on how to war well. I think there's enough evidence over the years that SA knows how to war, but for some reason, on this occasion, they didn't.
SA One Punch's Mysteria contact the Times shortly after publication to refute Stretch's suggestion that SA has higher battle stats than NS. So if stats weren't to blame for Subversive Alliance's defeat, what was? In a rare interview, SA leader Midknight decided not to elaborate on the specific reasons why his side had lost, preferring to proudly declare that Subversive Alliance has nothing to prove to anyone, least of all NS. And when I asked him last week what would end this war, and how financially damaging it had been to SA, Midknight responded with the following.
"Doesn't bother SA either way. Our options are vast. Nothing in Torn lost means anything to SA, it's a game. Just ask the factions that had to give up their legacies just to compete with a faction filled with BBQ lovers. SA isn't going anywhere."
Allies Assembled
By all accounts this was supposed to be a strict 1v1 war, but while direct fights between NS and SA did make up the bulk of the action, both sides appeared use proxies and / or sub-factions to some extent.
It is no secret that Subversive Alliance maintains a web of affiliate and ally factions that reportedly spans more than half the city map - our own investigations revealed as much early in 2020. Anyone wandering into SA's chunk of vaguely undefined territory can expect to come up against many of these so-called proxies, and this is something Natural Selection had to deal with, as Stretch reveals.
"The fake walls and declares from their minions grew annoying, including some trickery by OP and another faction saying they just needed to move through. In the end, after SA handed off so many of their rackets to these subs/proxies etc, we were forced to declare to make headway. SA OP actually were a ton of fun in the battles we had with them, they had a really good humor about them, we didn't really face any major push from the smaller factions though."

Pictured: One Punch making the most of the war.
SA One Punch incurred defensive defeats to NS at NBG, CWG, and DWG, with a failed attack also made at YYG. Numerous fake walls were then put up with SA and Winter is Coming afterward to hold back NS forces, but since then, One Punch has only fought the likes of Savage Plague, Nub Navy, and Wolverines.
An anonymous member of OP told The Times that his side enjoyed the war, but didn't join in fully because they had no real skin in the game, they couldn't take NS on their own, and it was supposed to be a pure 1v1 fight versus SA. Nevertheless, my source says that OPs leadership made the best of it for their members, but eventually, a new priority emerged.
"We had a choice to make to help our friends RoD or stay and again since it was supposed to be a 1v1 we stepped over to the west to do just that. OP members were amazing the whole way through. We are now resettled over here and have no plans to move from where we are, we feel this TT is a good spot to allow our members to continue their growth."
Their replacement on the battlefield was Itsi Bitsi Bikini - or at least that's what everyone thought when MightyGoober's newsletter leaked. IBB and SA have recent history as allies, having teamed up with Chain Reaction to slaughter the Animal Kingdom earlier this year. IBB's faction newsletters declaring their intention to war were leaked a couple of weeks ago, but this never happened. Midknight explains why IBB was brought into the fold.
"NS is an enemy to many. IBB has never had good relations with NS and having them as neighbours doesn't appeal to them based on previous interactions so they were getting ready to help if needed, nothing more."

Pictured: IBB discussions. Larger link here.
IBB are still loitering to the North-East of the Docks, but they never once got involved in a direct fight with NS during this fight. In fact, IBB only ever faced off against the likes of HT-, the 420 factions, the Damage factions, the 709's, and various others in the region south of the military base. In a comment to the TCT, IBB's MightyGoober revealed why his side prepared for war with NS but never actually fought them.
"We had no involvement in the SA / NS fight. SA are our friends, so we did start unsetting our upgrades early on in anticipation for them. We soon found out that the fight was intended to be 1v1. Us jumping in would only ensure more jumped in."
Note: I have been informed that the 420/709 factions are IBB affiliated, with these fights being part of the war between Damage / HT against IBB and friends.
On the other side, Natural Selection decided to go it alone for the majority of this war - officially, at least. Earlier in April, Stretch told me NS2-4 were "on standby in case some extra-curriculars began", with this move coming in light of the leaked IBB newser. Stretch is a fan of traditional 1v1 wars, but he clearly prepared to face off against those who didn't share his view.
"We wanted to ensure if SA decided to gather other factions, that we were prepared as well. The main purpose of the Insurgency war a couple of years ago was to constitute 1v1 wars and we have tried to stick to that. In the end, NS's subs were basically not involved. We just had them on alert in case."
This comment was made on the 12th of April, but my records show that NS4 was deployed in territorial conflict against Subversive Alliance at CBG on the 9th of April, eventually being defeated on the 12th. They followed this up with five consecutive wins over The Masters, but NS4 hasn't been involved in a territorial fight since the 19th of April.
In addition to NS2, some members of SA and One Punch have claimed that NS2 and NS3 fighters have been hospitalising them for some time. It looks like NS has tried to hit SA directly as much as they can, but they have used their subs a few times when necessary. The boundaries of a strict 1v1 war look blurry to me - something that could also be said about the beginning of this war itself.
The Beginning, and the End
As we said earlier, the first fight between NS and SA began on the 30th of March, but there were some highly explosive exchanges in the weeks before that. On the 1st of February, -BC-Airesslady of The Equalizer 3 United took 490,502 respect off SA with a single Dirty Bomb strike. On the 10th of March, another bomb hit SA for 496,648, and crucially, this one came from Hcom3.
Stretch believes that Subversive Alliance held and still holds NS responsible for this bomb, despite the fact that Hcom3 spent only one month in the past 18 within Natural Selection. However, in the forums, Proxima pointed out that this isn't a particularly accurate assessment of Hcom3's historic loyalties.
"Hcom3 was a diehard NS member for most of his Torn "career", and in the time after leaving NS he didn't become party (sp) of another faction family in the interim, he just went inactive. It might not have been an "NS bomb", seems like he managed to ruin just about everyone's day in fact lol, but it's a bomb NS are responsible for."
Penicillin, one of NS' leaders, countered this by describing Hcom3 as a B-list player in a sub-faction. He admits that a rational person would not say he was 0% NS, but he believes he was well below the percentage that would justify dropping a retaliatory DB on them.
"I think SA's determination was probably driven by emotion from just having been bombed, miro's merit-lust, and an overestimation of their strength. Regardless, SA felt their actions were justified and NS thought otherwise. Those are the makings of a war."
A quick read through ORAN's interview with Hcom3 before he left reveals he was part of NS2's council, so that doesn't really make him a B-list player. This conversation also makes it look like Hcom3 dropped the bomb out of boredom, but his choice of target does appear premeditated. Regardless, Penicillin is right that the disagreement over this issue led to the escalation of a conflict that has threatened to start for a while now.
SA hit back against NS with a Dirty Bomb of their own on the 17th of March. This bomb took 527,215 respect from NS, and while no confirmation has been made of the detonator, many in the forums have pointed firmly in Miro's direction. Regardless of who pushed the button, Stretch feels that SA was responsible, and believes they have done their best to obfuscate the truth on whether or not this action was authorised by their leadership.
"We attempted for a long time to setup a war with SA, but after 9 months of excuses and delays, we gave up. Then SA dropped a dirty bomb on us which, in our opinion, was unwarranted. We then decided a war needed to happen pronto."
Midknight offers up a different version of events.
"Using war negotiations from 18 months ago after trying to attack our racket in the middle of our JFK war until we defended it and fought NS as well leading them to sector 7 tells me enough about them to not care for their opinions. If they wanted a real war they should have chosen Christmas day."

Pictured: Ho-ho-hold your line, men!
One of the main criticisms leveled at NS by SA was the way they began this war without a formal declaration. Whether or not you believe such things are necessary, it appears that communication between the two camps was not a priority for either leader during this war. Stretch described SA leadership as being quiet throughout their conflict, and it looks like the war fizzled out on its own, with no formal terms having been discussed.
If both sides' proxies and allies pitched in more, the war could have gone on much longer. But they didn't, despite the fact that Stretch showed no sign of wanting to end the fight just a few days ago, and Midknight indicating that the financial impact of the war would not be an issue for his faction.
However, just one day ago, in comments to the TCT, Midknight appeared to suggest that when an end to the war came, it would be a choice borne out of care for his faction, not a formal peace treaty.
"SA members' health and sanity is all that matters to us. 2 months ago we fought a 3-week long war so we're not new to long wars. Subsequently, before this new update that gave their top members a huge advantage over more balanced factions they [NS] had no desire to fight longer than a day or 2, which I find that highly amusing."
"We don't need permission from anyone to end anything in Torn."
The Future
With Subversive Alliance now temporarily homeless, one wonders where they'll end up on the city map. They have no need to rush, but I suspect that a request to move along is already in the inbox of one of SA's many proxy pals.
And yet I can't help but wonder if Natural Selection has ended things too early. When the war was still in full swing, it looked like no faction would ever get a better chance to carve up SA's empire than now. Whatever caused SA to lose to NS was there to be capitalised on, and even though the dismantling of SA's proxy empire wasn't the goal of this war, Stretch admits it would've been a pleasant side-effect.
"This was not so much about going Braveheart on their territories or proxies, it was just to have a battle after the bomb and get some retribution. If the unintentional effect is that SA's 60%+ control of the map diminishes, we won't be disappointed."

Pictured: An artist's impression of what Stretch would look like as William Wallace. This cost us $20,000 to make.
If NS had continued the war and SA's empire had collapsed, many would deem a rebalancing of the racket proceeds a good thing for Torn in general. Developer changes to the territories system have spread the wealth somewhat, but perhaps all we needed in the first place was a faction with the will to rip it apart with their bare hands.
Penicillin of NS hopes that his side's dominant victory over Subversive Alliance will lead to such an outcome.
"I hope one of the outcomes of this war is that it breaks down some of the massive amount of proxying SA has built up across the map. The funny thing is that when you talk to some of these SA proxies, they say nice things about SA because SA gives them a piece of land that they couldn't have gotten otherwise and they can peacefully sit on it."
"Sure, they need to pay 50-100% of the proxy proceeds, but they are probably happy to just have the respect the land provides. The thing is, it robs the proxy of one of the best parts of the game, which is the struggle to get ahead on your own. Making your own decisions. Enjoying the successes and living with the things that go wrong. Not being told "sit here and don't fight anyone."
Medical Changes
I'll end this article with a quick comment from both leaders on how they've handled this war in the context of the (relatively) new medical system.
"It was challenging to get a great grasp on the new medical system, but I think there was not nearly the fierce battle that we have seen in the past. It will take some time and testing through more difficult wars to really know for sure what to think of it. While a few tweaks may be needed, managing med cd provides a more tactical approach to battling." - Stretch
"The new system is basically the old system. Being able to immobilize players with E won't lead to more warring, quite the opposite really. We're back to being able to end a fight in a few hours with the right stats which is far from progressive. Like previous s**t updates, all it takes is a little abuse and the game will go into doing nothing again." - Midknight
