How Will You Use Museum Day?

10% more points on offer for item and set exchanges at the Museum from 17th - 19th. Find out how other citizens are using the Museum Day event to earn big!
The 2006 documentary film "Night at the Museum" tells the tragic story of a drug-addled nightwatchman who loses his grip on reality and proceeds to molest as many wax Neanderthals as he can before being taken out by a police sniper. But if one were to spend a night at the Torn Museum this week, you would never get away with such escapades, as our city's cultural epicentre will be choc-a-bloc with real Neanderthals thanks to the arrival of Museum Day.

From noon on Monday the 17th, Torn City's world-renowned slightly s**t Museum will pay out 10% more points than usual in exchange for various items of intrigue. Museum Day lasts until noon TCT on the 19th of May, and will no doubt cause a huge haul of points, plushies, and pretty flowers to be parted with before the event is over.

The Markets

Museum Day typically has several profound effects upon the item and points markets, but their exact nature can vary depending on how our city's traders behave. Many plushies and flowers have already increased in value ahead of the event, with some players hoarding them to sell at inflated prices to those looking to complete their collections and others holding their sets to exchange themselves.

Outside of plushies and flowers, you may expect some of Torn's artefacts to rise in price too. We haven't seen huge movement on the likes of Medieval Coins and Senet Pieces, but there has been a noticeable increase in the price of Quran Scripts being sold via the Item Market and Bazaars. If you need one last piece to complete your collection, we advise you to use something like YATA's Set guide to compare the market value of an item with its equivalent value in points.

Pictured: The inflated price of Quran scripts on the item market compares poorly to their point rewards.

Of course, to find out whether an item or collection is worth buying at its current item market price to sell on Museum Day, you'll have to increase YATA's points value by 10%. In the example above, the item market value for a full set of Quran Scripts is $50,239,998, whereas its points value is only $48,377,000. This figure indicates that the price of points at the time was 48,377 since the Museum usually pays 1,000 points in exchange for the set.

Museum payouts are boosted by 10% on Museum Day, meaning you will get 1,100 points instead of 1,000. Based on the previous value of 48,377 per point, this means you should receive points with a value of $53,214,700 when exchanging a set of Quran Scripts on Museum Day. As a result, the initial $1,862,998 loss indicated by YATA has now been turned into a profit of $4,837,700. Or has it?

Point Projections

How much profit you gain from Museum Day depends greatly on how and when you sell your points afterward. The price of player-traded points had remained relatively unchanged since the pawn shop price was disconnected from the market back in July 2020, but the forthcoming Museum Day has put an end to this period of stability.

Pictured: Points Market one-month price graph.

Felix's pawn price of $45,000 meant that points were traded on the market for between $45,500 - $46,000 for most of the year, but as the graph above shows, point prices have been steadily increasing over the past month, rising to $49,000 at the time of writing. The reason points have been gaining value is that fewer have paid out by the Museum lately. Here is a weekly breakdown of just how many points have been paid out over the past six weeks:

May 3rd - May 9th: 2,244,270
April 26th - May 2nd: 2,514,960
April 19th - April 25th: 2,748,370
April 12th - April 18th: 2,932,250
April 5th - April 11th: 3,441,300
March 29th - April 4th: 3,176,330

As you can see, the number of points being generated dropped off massively since March and early April. This trend occurs because fewer sets of items have been exchanged for points in the run-up to Museum Day, causing a slight drop in the number of points being generated. If you are able to time things right, the period just before Museum Day is an ideal time to sell any points you have, whereas post-Museum Day, you can expect a huge drop in their value.

As a glut of Museum Day points flood the market, the price of points usually plummets and does not stop for a good month or two afterward. Will this happen again? That depends greatly on how traders and casual players behave this year. Based on 2020's graph, it appears that point-hoarders gradually release their stocks over the course of a couple of months, and this gives us a steady downward curve in the price of points over June and July.

This year, I wonder if we may see something different, as players try to outsmart each other and the market in order to get the best price for their points. OsRavan doesn't agree. He says that the setting of a $45,000 pawn shop value for points constitutes a price floor, which allows traders in both points and point-generating items to be more confident in their pricing. He feels the minimum value set by the pawn shop keeps the ceiling for point prices lower, and that this will give us a predictable Museum Day market.

The only way this might change is if players behave differently to years gone by, and since we now have a stable pawn shop point price, I think this is a distinct possibility. Notable Torn trader iribuya believes that many players may choose to avoid the pawn market entirely this year, and instead sell their points to Felix at the pawn shop directly.

"Last year I saw MANY people selling points below point pawn price. Make sure you mention Pawn Shop in the article. Pawn is usually not good to sell, but the 10% bonus will make it worthwhile even for pawn. Especially large bulks and high mug risk. I expect point price will drop from current high price to pawn price FAST."

Felix's current pawn price is $45,000, which is obviously way below the value offered on the item market of $49,000. However, the speed at which the point market drops, the threat of buymugging, and the value gained by the 10% Museum Day bonus may push a number of players towards the pawn shop instead. Yes, you may earn less per point by selling to Felix, but since you have 10% more points thanks to Museum Day, you are effectively selling to him at a price of $49,500 per point.

Player Behaviours

Museum Day has a habit of surprising some traders by shaking things up every now and then. To get a better picture of what the market is going to do this year, we asked our readers to tell us how they were using Museum Day 2021. Here's what they said:

_-Reaper-_ - "I’ve also sold most of my points cus I expect the price on them to drop with so many people having points."

Aaassh - "At 75 points/day for 3 refills for a year, I need 27,375 total points. So collected 2,500 plushie/flower sets which will net me 27,500 points in total and am waiting to exchange them... Just nice for 1 year of not having to think about buying points."

-MU-Turtle - "Every year I cash in and get at least 10k points I use them to refill for chains and getting nerve refilled to speed up my Merit hunting. I also generally donate a large number to my faction mates so they too can reap the benefits."

Nomekop65 - "I'm going to sell my plushies and flowers to traders before the event because the price is going to drop during and after the event. Sell all my points now and buy it back after the event because the is going to be an increase in the supply of points."

Qfiffle - "Spend the day mugging muppets who sell massive amounts of points without self-hosping."

Astrangegorgon - "I recently finished all the classes for Archaeology and am ready for museum day for the first time in my Torn career... I am also working on increasing my awareness so that I might begin to find more rare artifacts... I plan to use points to buy another merit or two and put them into awareness."

Travist - "I've sold all my points in prep for the pending points crash... also going to sell my plushies/flowers/artifacts on the days leading up to museum day when the price *should* rise as latecomers try to stock up."

Awesomepork101 - "I plan to sell all of the plushes and flowers I have stockpiled for a dollar underprice, meaning they sell like hot pockets... I plan to sell at different times to help out the less fortunate players and to spread out the money I gain."

Darmok - "I sold my FHG BB and put all that money into plushies. I'm currently sitting on 3300 sets. Looking forward to trading them in and selling those points so I can buy back into FHG... hopefully, the stock price is lower than it was when I cashed out ($675)!"

Fireflame - "I got my spouse to unlock the museum and I have been buy-mugging for artifacts for the past 2-3 months... hopefully it pays off!"

Lifecheese - "I intend to help some of the noobs as best I can by trading them either market price or straight fair point value for their bulk plushies, taking into account the 10% bonus of course. There were plenty of people who helped me get to where I am, so I intend to pay it forward."

Aquariuz - "Ever since mid-April, I've been hunting cheap artifacts on the item market. I see it as myself investing money in a month and I set how much interest/profit I want. That way, I know what's the highest price limit I will go."

Co_Morra - "As I started playing again last new year after an absence of over 8 years, I do have a lot of spare artifacts. Together with my active flowerruns from last couple of days, I'm expecting to make a nice amount of money to buy me yet another stockblock as I'm aiming to get the merit for owning all stockblocks in the nearby future."

MiSsYmOo - "I will probably buy some points as the price may go down don't even have museum unlocked anyone got the location I want to see the dinosaurs rawr."

Zaccyw - "One of my friends persevered with flying and trading and has managed to save up loads of flowers. She doesn't have the museum unlocked though. So I’ll be spending my time trading in someone else’s flowers for those extra points instead of my own half-full stash!"

Narzivial - "A few of my very close friends and I wanted to buy a decent faction for ourselves and build it from the ground up. However, we faced a few problems, with the 1st being the lack of funds... The solution to that was to go on plushie runs and flower runs. All the plushie/flower sets will be converted into points and sold in bulk to raise funds for our project. We're currently a few bucks short but should manage to pull through in the end."

BitchCutter - "Point values are spiked in the lead-up to this event. I have dumped excess points in advance, with plans of buying again during and after the event to rebuild my stockpile."

TOMMYNATER - "If history repeats itself then camels will rise to 110k like they did last year. This means an easy 15-17% increase in price. Museum day only increases profits by 10%. If my college algebra class taught me anything's it's that big number > small number. So my big scheme is to buy up 500mil worth of camels at 94-96k and resell for that juicy return beating out the event by 50% profit, and well if camels don't move up like last year then I blame ched for ruining everything. #LetThePoorThrive"

OsRavan - "I got into museum day last year by market cycling. Essentially, I bought maybe ten sets on the market cheap, sold them to a trader, and then had enough money to buy maybe 12 sets. Then next day sold that and bought 15. On and on. You can make a great profit on museum day without bothering with the the museum. There's enough traders giving a cut throat rate for sets that even those who dont have the edu to gather points can make a tidy profit.

Xhogaux - "Crying, because having only joined about 2 months ago there's no way of doing all the required education in time."
