Wait A Second...

Find out how Torn's new minimum turn length will affect attacks, scripts, muggings, and major competitions.
An announcement by Chedburn on today's Patch List has just confirmed that each attacking turn will now take a minimum of one second. This lower limit has been applied uniformly to all attacks for all players, regardless of their internet connection, finger speed, or scripts that are in use. This change should be barely noticeable before long, but will nevertheless serve to solve a number of issues related to fairness and balancing.

If you’d like to see what an agonising one-second delay looks like, take a look at this example gif here:

As you can see, a one-second turn doesn’t impact greatly on the flow of a fight and will not provide an advantage that was not there before. Players who attack roughly once every second can still do so if they're quick enough, and the time it takes to make a single hit mug will only be increased by up to two seconds overall. We anticipate that some experienced muggers will complain at this change, but we are confident that a one-second minimum turn time shouldn't impact their ill-gotten gains too much.

What this change will do is help to remove some of the disadvantages certain players experience, especially when they are faced against an opponent who appears able to make hits faster than is humanly possible - we noticed some players making three hits per second, which we can all agree is absolutely absurd unless you're the f***ing Flash. Thanks to one-second minimum turns, scripts and ultra-fast internet connections will no longer be as much of a deciding factor in a fight as they once were.

A uniform minimum turn length also allows us to release ranked warring onto an even playfield, as it would be grossly unfair to disadvantage factions whose members hail from regions with subpar internet speeds. Another major advantage is that instant, script-assisted mugs are no longer possible. Certain scripts allow players to minimise loading elements on Torn, thus allowing the attacker to make their move before their opponent can load their own page in full. Such scripts will now be less effective, meaning that a greater share of mug outcomes will be determined by player skill and timing rather than the use of a script.

One-second minimums will also help to relieve the impact of major events upon Torn’s servers. During high-profile attacking contests such as Elimination, or popular events like Valentine’s Day, many players have a propensity for spam-clicking the attack options, a behaviour that has the effect of slowing things down for everyone. The one-second minimum makes spam clicking absolutely pointless - but we know some people will probably give it a go anyway!

Overall, the introduction of a standard, one-second minimum turn length will make Torn a much fairer and consistent place. Regardless of when you attack, who you attack, and from which nation you’re playing, all attacks should now run at the same speed for everyone. Whether you win or lose depends on your bullets, brawn, and balls, not your patchy Wi-Fi coverage.

tl;dr: Each attacking turn now takes a minimum of one second to process.
