Find out how much blood you could squeeze out during World Blood Donor Day under the new medical item mechanics.
Blood is great, isn't it? Without blood, we'd have no way of getting oxygen to our brains, the nutrients we consume would never be absorbed, and you would have no way of knowing if someone has made a hole in your back with a box cutter. That happens more often than you'd think, given my line of work.
But I have it on good authority that you, yes you, do not need all of your blood. Future you needs it more. And that's why you're going to pump out a few litres of the red stuff this weekend, as Torn City awaits the biggest World Blood Donor Day in history!
HOW MAKE BLOOD GO SQUIRT
To withdraw blood, citizens must first complete the BIO2127 Intravenous Therapy Education course. Once you've achieved this qualification, you'll need to head on over to the item market and purchase yourself some Empty Blood Bags - you cannot store excess blood in milk bottles, rubber gloves, or your own mouth.
Now that you're all set up, all you need to do is click the Use icon on your Empty Blood Bag and voila, you'll produce a pouch of your inside ketchup that you can store for safekeeping. If you don't know your blood type already this is where you'll find out, and it can be a sobering moment when you realise your A+ Blood Bag would've been worth more if you hadn't filled it.

HOW MUCH BLOOD?
The number of blood bags you can produce over a set period of time depends on how dedicated you are and whether or not you have medical cooldown perks and / or life regeneration merits. For the purposes of this article, we're going to assume you have no perks, and that you are a blood-letting machine who is willing to work through the night to make a few grand from your boiled beef and carrots.
From noon on the 13th of June to the same time on the 15th, all players who withdraw blood will suffer half the usual life and cooldown penalties. This year marks the first iteration of World Blood Donor Day since the medical changes were made, meaning that we need a whole new set of mathematical calculations to determine the maximum amount of blood you can squeeze out in 48-hours. First up, let's look at how blood-letting works during a regular two-day period.
48-HOUR BLOOD PLAN
In February, the values for blood bags were changed drastically, with their use now costing 30% of your life, but only increasing your cooldown by 60 minutes. However, since the overall cooldown limit was dropped from 24 hours to 6 hours, the numbers are now more in your favour when it comes to using empties. The result is that you can now fill 54 Empty Blood Bags over the course of a normal 48-hour period.

Pictured: Literal life goals.
To achieve this total, you must begin by using three blood bags in quick succession, thus increasing your cooldown to 180 minutes and reducing your life to 10%. If you began at 12:00 noon, you would need to wait until 12:20 for your life to regenerate to 30% before filling your fourth bag. This should reduce your life to 0%, but in actual fact, Torn always seems to give you a smidgen of leftover life due to the way the percentages are rounded down.
Based on the standard life regen of 5% every 5 minutes, players must then fill further bags every half an hour until 15:20. At this point you will have reached a cooldown of 400 minutes, having filled your tenth bag at 340 minutes. You can always go over your cooldown limit with one single item use, and you will need to do that multiple times to make the most of your blood. This is the first point in the day that your blood-letting activities are curtailed by your cooldown limit, rather than your life - from this point forward your life bar will find room to increase, rather than fluctuating between 0 and 30%.
Your next appointment with the needle is at 16:00, 40 minutes after bag 10, taking cooldown to 420 minutes and life down to 10%. This is the highest your cooldown can go, and it requires you to use a blood bag immediately after your cooldown drops below 360. You'll now need to wait 60 minutes between donations, and if desired, this pattern can continue throughout a full 48 hour period - or indefinitely, if you are utterly insane.
BLOOD DONOR DAY PLAN
During World Blood Donor Day, filling a blood bag will cost you 15% of your life, and your cooldown will be increased by just 30 minutes. This means you can fill six blood bags before your life bar will drop down to 10%, thus preventing you from spilling any more - at this point, you will have a cooldown of 180 minutes. Since your life typically regenerates at 5% every 5 minutes, you'll need to wait five minutes to get your life up to 15% before you can use another bag.
If we began this bloody adventure at 12:00 with six bags, and we filled a seventh at 12:05, filling our eighth would be possible at 12:20, with new fills made every fifteen minutes. This pattern can continue until your cooldown limit is reached on bag nineteen at 15:05, at which point you must leave a 25-minute gap, as this allows your cooldown to drop from 385 to 360. The gap thereon is half an hour between bags, given that each bag adds 30 minutes, and you can only go one item above cooldown.
Based on this repeating pattern, we've calculated that you could fill 108 Empty Blood Bags over the course of World Blood Donor Day if you really, really, really wanted to. Of course, this would require you to press a button every half an hour over two days straight - unless you've got a drinking bird setup going on.

Pictured: Bogie said this isn't against the rules, but I did ask him in my dreams, so don't quote me on that.
THE SHORTCUTS
A more realistic plan than my 48-hour phlebotomy marathon is to knock out between 15-20 Blood Bags in a timeframe of 2-3.5 hours. You could then go for a lovely walk through a local crime hotspot, let your cooldown return to zero, and return to do it all over again. This process could be repeated several times over the course of World Blood Donor Day - if nobody attacks you to disrupt your flow.
_SCOfield_ notes that my process can be improved even further if you use revives. He says that after you have dropped your life down to 10%, you could get yourself hospitalised and then revived to receive 100% life. This would mean you could use even more empty blood bags to make the most of the event. However, what I would say is that this isn't a hugely cost-effective method, as the last time I checked, a revive would cost roughly one Xanax - let me know if this figure is incorrect and I'll update the article.
Andyman added that the use of the Going Back For More book would be unwise during World Blood Donor Day. This item provides a 50% reduction in medical item cooldown, but he would not recommend wasting such a valuable perk on filling Empty Blood Bags - unless you are actively involved in ranked warring, or you're expecting a few Dirty Bombs to come your way.
LIFE REGENERATION
One thing we haven't touched upon in this article is the impact of life regeneration perks upon the amount of blood you can withdraw. My original spreadsheet can be found here, where I used the base 5% life increase every 5 minutes value to calculate my final figures. But a modified version of my calculations made by LosGoobos can be found here, where they took into account the addition of a 3% life regen perk obtained at the Meat Warehouse.
"Ultimately if the individual doesn't sleep, there is 0 difference. What ends up happening is that although the individual can initially reach CD faster (and consume more up front) the normal mode can eventually catch up. Considering that folks need to sleep, someone with health regen might be able to consume a few more though!"
LosGoobos was underwhelmed by these findings and decided to provide us with some interesting blood withdrawal trivia to compensate.
"The generation of blood is called haematopoiesis or hemopoiesis, and it is pretty safe to say that the average person (with enough iron) is able to regenerate about 1% of their blood per day (roughly 50 ML out of an averaged 5L)."
"If we were to correlate % of life decrease to % of blood donated, then a healthy Torn citizen could conceivably donate 54 *30% = 1620% of their blood volume (essentially 81 liters) in a normal 48 hours - it would take them more than 4.3 years to create that much blood outside of Torn!"
Would you like one final piece of trivia? Of course you would. Andyman has kindly provided us with the names of the most prolific blood-extractors in Torn City. Using Andyman's Player Diversity Ranks, you can see that BeastArrow, Antrum, and Perfect_Fighter top the list with a total of 19,094, 18,823, and 17,664 Empty Blood Bags filled. That is a s**tload of blood. Almost as much as I can hold in my mouth.
tl;dr: Cooldown and Life Penalties for Blood Withdrawal halved from 12:00 noon on the 13th to 12:00 noon on the 15th June.
