PT and CR Form Alliance

4th and 7th ranked HoF factions confirm formal alliance. Fear / admiration of Relentless were motivating factors say leaders. Full merger not considered according to Xanty and MeanMike.
A leaked discord screenshot has revealed that PT-Family and Chain Reaction, two of Torn City's biggest factions, have formed an official alliance. The leaders of both factions have confirmed this union to the Torn City Times, with CR leader MeanMike describing the agreement as “a commitment to each other to face the coming days in Torn City side-by-side”.

“Our alliance entails defending our region together. PT and CR and their conglomerates are happy in our little section of the map. Things are peaceful and good and we have been tight neighbors for quite some time now, making it an official alliance is just a formality as both factions learned long ago, we are lucky to have each other as neighbors and it doesn’t behoove either faction to have the other removed. I'll leave it at that.” - MeanMike

PT leader Xanty echoed these sentiments, remarking that the two factions have worked well together before and that this alliance was simply a matter of keeping the relations they have already built. He also backed up MeanMike’s positive assessment of their joint territorial holdings, and said that any future movements would be “strictly of a defensive nature.”

The full text of the leaked discord chat makes it clear who they fear they’ll be defending against.

Why Ally?

Based on Xanty’s comments and the leaked screenshot, it appears that this alliance has been formed to respond to the perceived threat of Relentless and Mentos and Cola, who were and reportedly are still in discussion over a merger. We have yet to receive any further updates on this story aside from the news that several R members have left to join other factions, but it seems that the prospect of an R/MnC megafaction was enough to push CR and PT into formalising their own alliance. Xanty had the following comment to make on the matter.

“Survival of the fittest has been going on for many years, and like in real life I see no difference in Torn. You have to adapt to the change to your environment or see yourself falling behind stuck in the past.”

MeanMike’s tone was somewhat different. Rather than being fearful of Relentless and MnC, he admitted to being a fan, and described R’s leader Hank as both a good friend and “one of the smartest dudes in the game”. Mike went on to say that the alliance with PT came partly as a result of him feeling inspired to follow Hank’s example by improving his own faction’s standing in the game.

Mike added that his side chose to ally with PT because they are “loyal, trustworthy and more than able to pull their weight if some shenanigans go down.” These things may be true, but I still find myself wondering why Chain Reaction and Relentless didn’t hook-up, given that both factions have been looking to bolster their own sides for some time. MeanMike had the following to say.

“Hank and I discussed a CR/R merge a long, long time ago, but it didn’t really get off the ground. There were no overtures from Relentless to CR before they made their move with MnC. On the contrary, I actually had an unofficial chat with them, gauging interest in revisiting the topic and they showed no interest, so whoever told you they came to us is mistaken.”

Alliance vs Merger

Given the closeness of CR and PT, many will be wondering why the two sides have chosen to ally themselves instead of going the whole hog with a full-on merger. This question has probably already been answered by the fallout from the Relentless / MnC merge, as this dump of Relentless forum complaints from their angry members makes abundantly clear. But some mergers make sense more than others, so why was such a move off the cards for PT and CR?

“CR and PT families have both fought hard to get to where we are today building our own factions with good values and neither want to see all our work go for not with a merger. Mike and I both like to be independent and can count on one another to do what is right when the time comes. Why ruin a good thing and add complications with a merger?” - Xanty

Mike once again mirrored these comments, adding that their agreement is almost like a merger, but without the unnecessary drama of roster shuffling. He seemed to feel that there was no real need for both sides to give up their individual cultures and reputations when there was no good reason to do so.

“Our commitment to stand together is as strong as any merged team, we just don’t have to give up or water down our legacies to do it.” - MeanMike

“PT has been one of the longest factions in all of Torn and we will continue to honor the legacy of those before us have paved the way for. We will never merge and will always maintain our identity.” - Xanty

The Next Step

PT’s territory spreads over sectors 1 and 2 on the east side of the city just south of the Jail. Chain Reaction is situated to the northeast of PT in sector 3, with the East Side stores surrounding their holdings. Xanty says that the alliance’s immediate priority is to grow their respective dynasties and provide defensive support to their area of the map. He believes that the presence of two allied factions in the area will help to keep both of their regions safe.

“In order to prevent any surprise attacks, making our alliance official can deter or cause the attacking faction whoever they may be to have second thoughts. We will be able to see and delay if needed any malintent movements from enemy factions.”

MeanMike agreed and added that if Natural Selection were to stay neutral, it would take a large force to remove an allied PT and CR from their area in the East. Neither Mike nor Xanty appears to have any desire to start a conflict anytime soon, however, and Mike specifically described one of CR’s goals as to “mind our business”. Nevertheless, conflict has a habit of turning up uninvited, so it will be interesting to see which faction in Torn will chance their arm, and whether or not they succeed.

“I'd say it [the alliance] ranks in the top 3-4 allied forces in the game, which really doesn’t change much for CR we were there on our own, But this is turning into a numbers game and a stand-alone 100 member faction, no matter how good they are, is not gonna survive in the top 5 on their own. It's truly gang-warfare in Torn these days and everyone is smart to have a dancing partner. R* was a great one to us, SA still is, and we think PT will be also. As for our enemies. I dunno. I guess they will expose themselves when they head in our direction, won’t they?”

What’s In A Name?

Finally, as is the custom in these parts, I expect many will want to give this new alliance a snazzy new name to usher in their new era of cooperation. MeanMike thinks the alliance should be called PC Principle, whereas Xanty liked AiR’s suggestion of CRyPTo. Whatever their alliance is called, they've already got their desktop backgrounds sorted thanks to the efforts of PT member and Torn's resident statistiatrix, Josephine.
