Road Map to Museum Day 2022

Find out why the upcoming Tourism Day event should be used to begin your preparations for next year's Museum Day.
Tourism Day is now less than a week away, with this 48-hour travel-based event set to provide a welcome respite for those who have been toiling away in Elimination for much of the past month. But while many players will be using the double travel capacity on offer to stock up on essentials and saleables for a short-term gain, Torn's savviest citizens will instead use it to begin preparations for another event:

Museum Day 2022.

MUSEUM DAY? WTF?

Museum Day is an annual Torn event that takes place in May, during which you will gain an extra 10% in points when you exchange Flower sets, Plushie sets, or a variety of artifacts down at the museum. In sugarvalves's post-Museum Day article, he revealed that a massive sum of 31,671,606 points was given out during the event.

Of course, the price of points tends to fluctuate massively around Museum Day, and when you also factor in the last-minute scramble for exchangeable items that often happens, many players can end up making less than they should if they're not prepared. Ask yourself, did you actually manage to make a good profit during this year's Museum Day? Or could you have done better? What can you do differently to maximize profits next year?

If you are interested in carpe diem-ing Museum Day 2022, the long-term planning and work starts now.

ARTIFACTS - WORTH IT?

To begin, let's look at the most expensive collectibles. Why? Because some people believe these to be better trading prospects on Museum Day, but I'm going to prove that this is incorrect.

While a set of plushies or flowers will gain you 11 points come Museum Day, coins, scripts, and senet collections provide between 110 and 2,200 points. Egyptian Amulets go for even more, with 11,000 points paid out in return for these items between the 17th and 19th of May. That's a big fat increase of 1,000 points per item when Museum Day's 10% bonus is added, so why shouldn't I focus on artifacts?

The problem with these items is that unlike plushies and flowers, they can't be found while traveling abroad, and are instead picked up as random spawns on your city map. Most people will try and buy these items throughout the year at a cheap price, but even then you may not get your money's worth if the value of points drops unexpectedly.

Here's a snapshot of the financial cost of certain items versus their payouts taken from May 20th, 2021. At the time, the value of points was $45,413, having crashed soon after Museum Day ended.

As you can see, if you buy these items just after Museum Day - at a time when you'd expect prices to be their lowest - you won't make much of a profit if you exchange them on the next Museum Day and sell them immediately after. It's a different story if you buy your items later in the year, and then sell the points during the pre-Museum Day inflation period.

As Museum Day approaches, many players are busy saving their point-generating items to exchange for more points during the event. This results in a short-term rise in the price of points, with their value jumping to $48,000 this year. Also, if you've looked at the price of artifacts lately, you'll notice that many of them are cheaper now than they were in May.

This means that the ideal situation is that you buy your items in August, exchange them in May 2022, and sell the points in May 2023. That's a long-ass wait. But how much would you make?

The first item that immediately stands out is the Amulet, but we have reason to believe that this value is false. Amulets tend to go for about $550 million right now, with this $400 million price caused by a one-off uber-cheap sale. Normally, you're still looking at a $50 million loss under the most perfect circumstances with one of these items, and the best you can hope for is an $8 million profit on a Senet Set. That's not worth waiting for by anyone's standards.

As a general rule, artifacts do not give a good return of investment. Moreover, finding a large number of artifacts in the item market that are favorably priced is rare. If you already have a huge haul of points saved from artifacts that you bought and exchanged last year, wait until early May to sell those points. But if you don't have them already, I would not advise you to use artifacts to make financial gains on Museum Day.

PLUSHIES vs FLOWERS

Since Tourism Day allows you to return to Torn with double the usual capacity of items, this 48-hour event provides you with the perfect opportunity to start building your collection ahead of next year's Museum Day. But what should you collect first? And how can you continue collecting at a good pace throughout the year after Tourism Day?

The first thing to note is that it is massively inefficient to buy all of your plushies or flowers from abroad or from Torn. Some of these items are worth traveling for when you buy in bulk, whereas others are not worth the cost of a flight - and that's true even if you have free flights, as time is money, people!

I have compiled a spreadsheet that compares Plushies Sets vs Flower Sets per 100 sets. This data is compiled for those who own a Private Island with an airstrip. Non-PI players or players with the WLT benefit block should alter this data according to their respective travel durations and flight costs. I have also pre-determined which items are worth buying in Torn, and which are better sourced from abroad.

Plushie sets were cheaper by $4 million at their late-May prices, but this may vary over time. These values also assume that you have followed my instructions and only traveled to buy short and medium-haul items while buying the Torn City and Long-haul items from the item market at what I would consider to be a reasonable price.

With this information taken into consideration, it is advisable to collect Plushies over Flowers in preparation for Museum Day 2022. Now let's find out how to go about doing that, as we investigate which plushies you should focus on during Tourism Day.

1. Torn City Plushies - Sheep, Teddy, and Kitten

These items can be bought at Bits and Bobs at $25, $30, and $50 respectively. However, being limited to 100 items per day is a hindrance - it is better to use this limit to buy Beer at $10 per bottle and sell it at $3,700 per bottle (subject to item market price variance). The profits made by this endeavor are sufficient to fund 100 of each plushie in this category. Remember, it is important to fix a maximum price you are willing to pay for a plushie when buying from the item market. I suggest $500-600.

2. Medium Haul - Nessie, Red Fox, Monkey, and Chamois

For these items, you'll need to fly to the UK, Argentina, and Switzerland. If you are an avid druggy who needs their fix of 3 Xanax per day, the best time to make a flight to these destinations is after taking a Xanax, as you are back within 4 hours and will therefore suffer no energy wastage. Moreover, you are able to buy plushies at a cheaper and fixed rate than on the item market.

If your Xanax cooldown is over 3 hours after your first trip, it is worthwhile to make another medium-haul trip. Make sure to use the help of web extensions such as Torntools, Arsonwarehouse, or Torn PDA (mobile) to ensure that the plushies you want are available when you land.

3. Short Haul - Jaguar, Stingray, and Wolverine

Short-haul trips to the Caymans, Canada, and Mexico are dependent on Xanax cooldown. Following your medium-haul trip, if your Xanax cooldown is less than 3 hours, it is better to make multiple short-haul trips until your next Xanax. As with a medium-haul trip, the benefit of these short-haul trips is cheap and fixed price rates.

In order to ensure plushie availability, use the extensions mentioned in the previous section to find out when the local plushie stock has dropped to zero. Once you see that the plushies are out of stock in a short-haul nation, you will have between 20 and 40 minutes before they are restocked, so you should fly there immediately to increase your chances of finding some when you arrive.

4. Long Haul - Panda, Camel, and Lion

These trips take 5-7 hours. This means a donator/subscriber would hit max energy well before returning to Torn. Avoid these trips unless you have the WLT benefit block or you are employed at a 10-star Lingerie Store (BCT passive perk)

You should also remember to set a maximum price you are willing to pay for these items on the item market. I advise $69k, $70k, and $92k respectively. These prices will fluctuate annually, especially rising as you get closer to Museum Day. It is best to stock up on these plushies when you find them at a low price. A helpful tool to monitor plushie prices is YATA - Bazaar

5. Points

If you are a daily refill user, it is important to stock up on points as you get closer to the event. Point prices rose to $48-49k this year from their normal average of $45,000. In order to maximize profit margins, it is smart to buy up additional points if you can a month or two prior to the event.

Conclusion

Using all three daily refills over a year requires 27,375 points. If you aim to collect 2,500 sets in a year, this will net you 27,500 points on Museum Day, thereby ensuring that you don't have to spend any money on points for a whole year!!!

Plushies provide the best return on your investment. And unlike artifacts, they do not require a large sum to invest all at once. Rather, you can gradually invest in it over the year at your convenience. Plushies also have a great resale value if you are ever in a fix. And if you keep plushie purchasing as part of your normal routine, here's what you'll be paying in total over the year.

Larger Link

Of course, it's hard to get into a new routine if you're new to plushie running. But if you use Tourism Day to get you on your way, that's a big hurdle you've overcome already. And should you manage to continue running and acquire 2,500 sets over the course of the year, you'd have a haul worth 27,500 points on Museum Day 2022.

Sell all of these to Felix at the pawnshop for $45,000 and you'll still make more than a 100% return on your investment. 27,500 times $45,000 is $1.23 billion, and if you hold off until next year for the $48,000 point price, you can up this by nearly another $100 million.

So the final question is what are you waiting for? Start collecting those plushies this Tourism Day!
