With Torn's 48-hour double item capacity bonus set to kick in at noon on the 26th, we investigate whether recent updates will affect the event, and consider the possibility of player-led disruption.
Torn's annual Tourism Day event begins on Sunday at noon, with the temporary doubling of item travel capacities set to trigger a mass departure from the city as players of all levels fly out in an attempt to secure a haul of cheap s**te. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Tourism Day 2021.

When It Counts

Tourism Day officially runs from 12:00 TCT on the 26th until the same time on the 28th. Now obviously, it is only your return flight that matters here, since that's when you'll be returning with a huge-ass haul of foreign goods. But don't get caught out trying to fly too early, because if you take off at 11:59 am on the 26th, your return flight will not be eligible for the double item capacity bonus.

The 2x bonus kicks in for all trips that start between 12:00 TCT on the 26th and 12:00 TCT on the 28th, regardless of where you're flying to or when you return home. Most people will make multiple trips during Tourism Day, so once you've begun your jet-setting adventures, just remember that on your last trip, your flight out of Torn needs to depart before 12:00 TCT on the 28th.

This means you can leave it as late as a minute before the event ends to start your final journey. If your plane leaves Torn at 11:59 am on the 28th and makes a standard 5-hour flight to South Africa, you can stay there shooting tigers for months if you like, as your return flight home will still be eligible for the bonus whenever it lands.

How It Stacks

Every single buff related to travel capacity is doubled during Tourism Day, whether it comes from a book, company perk, or your base allocation. A standard traveller sees their item capacity double from 5 to 10 during Tourism Day, but if you use a small suitcase to boost your capacity to 7, this now doubles to 14, since the 2x bonus is applied once your full capacity calculation has been made.

Let's say you have an Airstrip, which increases your base capacity to 15, and you go out and buy a large suitcase to add another 4 onto this. Your item capacity is now 19 before Tourism Day bonuses are added. Then you remember you've got the Smuggling for Beginners book, so you use that and add another 10 to your 19 for a total of 29. If there are no other bonuses to be applied, Tourism Day will double that total to give you a capacity of 58 items per flight.

The optimal combination would see a player use a large suitcase (4) and the Smuggling Book (10) while working at a 10-star Cruise to use the two travel specials (5), being part of a faction with the maxed Excursion special (10), and owning either a Private Island Airstrip or the WLT benefit block (base 15). This would give you a total of 44 items, which is doubled on Tourism Day to a hefty 88. Here are all of the things that you can use to boost your travel capacity.

Small suitcase: 2 - increases to 4
Medium suitcase: 3 - increases to 6
Large suitcase: 4 - increases to 8
Airstrip owners: base increased to 15 - increases to 30
WLT Benefit Block: base increased to 15 - increases to 30
3 Star Cruise special: 2 - increases to 4
5 Star Lingerie special: 2 - increases to 4
10 Star Cruise special: 3 - increases to 6
Excursion faction special (maxed): 10 - increases to 20
Smuggling for beginners book: 10 - increases to 20

Note: This article has been updated to remove any mention of the Toy Shop and Flower Shop specials which are not affected by Tourism Day.

If you can't be arsed working any of that out, don't worry, as Torn will do it for you. All you really have to do is prioritise which items you need the most when buying them, and keep track of how many additional items you can purchase, which will be displayed at the top of your screen.

And finally, if you don't own the Smuggling book mentioned above, but you do have Mailing Yourself Abroad, Tourism Day is a great time to use it. This book reduces all flight times by 25%, thus allowing you to fit in even more foreign jaunts.

What's Changed

Despite my repeated suggestion to include a cavity search fail option, the mechanics of Tourism Day haven't changed since we introduced it. However, there have been some new developments in Torn over the past 12 months that may affect your Tourism Day experience.

For starters, money can no longer be deposited into the Stock Market while you are flying. This used to be a popular trick for travellers to keep their money safe from muggers when landing back in Torn after a trip, but this function was removed with Stocks 3.0. Any money you have on hand will be at risk during your entire stay and beyond, so take only what you need.

If you do end up hospitalised abroad, February's med changes mean you'll spend less time seeing white screens than you would in previous years. However, because you can't access your inventory in a foreign nation, you'll have to rely on revives to get you out, and these are now more expensive thanks to the introduction of failed revives. The only players who won't need a revive are those who hold the 5 star Logistics special, Repatriated, which allows players to fly home from hospital without waiting to heal.

When you land back in Torn, you will have a 15-second grace period before anyone can attack you, thanks to the introduction of this feature earlier this year. This isn't hugely relevant, since you shouldn't be carrying much money on you unless you've made a withdrawal from the Caymans. But if you are currently receiving a lot of post-Elimination attention from bountiers, you can use the 15-second window to hop between flights without being caught. Neato!

Who Will F**k You Up

The Detective Agency's 7* Watchlist special allows players to anonymously extend anyone's flight time. This tactic could be used against item runners, but the 50 job point cost means it's more likely to be deployed against players in the Caymans who are withdrawing cash, with the hope being that the target might be forced to log off before their extended flight has landed. To avoid becoming a target, players can use the 10 star Theater special, Disguised, which hides your travel status and destination.

A more realistic threat to those taking part in Tourism Day comes from Natural Selection, who absolutely love quarantining countries. Other factions have been known to do this too, but the lads at NS are the masters, and while I have no information that suggests they are planning anything this year, I certainly wouldn't bet against it. Their "quarantine" typically involves a number of NS fighters flying somewhere and hospitalising as many travellers as possible. Be wary of this possibility before flying.

The last thing that may happen during Tourism Day is that a Dirty Bomb will be let off in Torn City, leading to the temporary closure of all airports and the delay of all flights across the globe. If I had a Dirty Bomb, I would absolutely use it during Tourism Day, as you could potentially inconvenience thousands of people with the simple push of a button, turning parts of Torn City into a ghost town for a few hours.

But that's because I'm a piece of s**t who likes to see people suffer. Nobody of sound mind would ever do such a thing, would they?

What To Buy

Whatever the f**k you want? I'm not your mother.

But if you do need some help deciding, FD24 wrote an excellent guide on how to use Tourism Day to prepare for next year's Museum Day just this week. Just make sure you don't fly before researching which items are in stock at your preferred destination, because that will be disappointing, and you're already disappointing enough.

To avoid travel sadness, you can use the 10 star specials at the Toy and Flower shop to check the stock of plushies and flowers in all countries. However, these specials have been made somewhat redundant by the Yata website, which shows how much of everything is available everywhere. You should probably use that instead. Yeah? Yeah.

tl;dr: Travel Capacity doubles from 12:00 TCT 26th - 12:00 TCT 28th.
