Treat-collecting attacking event begins at noon on Monday. Find out to take part, how to be scary, and how many people really unlocked the Cat in Hell upgrade last year.
Trick or Treat begins at noon on Monday the 25th of October. This event is now in the second year of its current format, but many of you still have some questions regarding the event. When can you collect treats? How do you prepare? Will there be more baskets? Have I kept my upgrades? And will anyone finally awaken a horrific creature from its eternal slumber?
No, your mother's a heavy sleeper.
Don't Be a Basket Case
Players who are new to the Trick or Treat event will need to visit Sally's Sweet Shop to purchase a Halloween Basket. These baskets are available from noon on the 25th and cost only $35. Buying a basket will contribute to your 100 a day store item limit, but if you have already reached your limit you can still buy one without it taking you over. You should also find it a little easier to get hold of one this year, as Sally has quite a few more in stock than she did in 2020.

Last year we saw huge virtual queues forming outside Sally's as players frothed at the groin to get their hands on Sally's cute orange punnet. Coronavirus restrictions at the time meant she was limited to the sale of just 100 baskets every 15 minutes, but this year this ratio has increased to 1,000, and they will restock every 5 minutes.

If you already have a Halloween Basket leftover from last year you don't need to queue up with the newbies for a new one. Your basket will have kept all of the treats, levels, and upgrades earned during last year's event. Now all you need to do is go and f**k people up.
Treat Is One Letter From Threat
For one week beginning at noon on the 25th of October, players who own a Halloween Basket will automatically collect treats by attacking other players. Treats will be available to collect immediately from 12:00 TCT, unlike last year, when treats were only available from 14:00 TCT.
The number of treats you receive from an attack will not increase or decrease depending on whether you hospitalize, leave, arrest, or mug your opponent. And unlike the first year of this event, players cannot lose a treat by being attacked, because everyone got soft and cried when we did that.
Your treats can be exchanged at any point during the year, and doing so will provide you with various useful items such as alcohol, boosters, and candy. Alternatively, players can use their treats to purchase basket upgrades, each of which will help your treat-collecting cause in one way or another.

Additional upgrades can be unlocked as your basket ranks up through the ten basket levels. Levelling up your basket is an automatic process that happens when you reach certain treat-collecting milestones. The upgrades get interesting the higher you go, as while some merely give you a chance of increasing the number of treats gained by an attack, others provide special bonuses, such as the chance to increase the value of the items received when you exchange your treat stack.
Andyman's Trick or Treat Analysis thread can be used to help you decide which upgrades you should unlock first, and which of them aren't worth bothering with. Or you can just click randomly like a maniac and hope for the best. Why not choose chaos?
What Have We Broken This Time?
No fundamental changes have been made to the way that the Trick or Treat event works, but we have added one or two small things to this year's event.
Players who have unlocked the Here's Johnny upgrade have a 10% chance of receiving an extra treat if they use a Scary weapon for their finishing hit at the end of an attack. Nothing has changed with regard to how the upgrade works, but we have made it easier to know how to use it, as Scary weapons are now designated as such in the item information panel.
Scary wearables are similarly marked to help you with the I See Dead People upgrade. You can find a full list of Scary items on the Wiki. Two new Scary weapons have been added to this list in the form of the Cleaver and the Meat Hook, both of which have a chance to spawn in the Church graveyard for all players during the month of October.
And finally, a small, tiny, ever-so-insignificant change has been made to the Summon Cthulhu upgrade. Not that anyone should ever find out what it is. Chedburn says there's nothing to be gained by summoning mythical ancient beasts anyway, so you probably shouldn't do it.
Stats Interesting
I have some numbers for you. The first number is a thousand, which is roughly the number of people who have messaged me asking who triggered the Cat in Hell upgrade. Buying this upgrade means every attack has a 1 in 500,000 chance of paying out 1,000 treats, making it highly unlikely to be triggered by anyone for some time yet.
Despite the odds, rumours persist that someone achieved this miraculous feat last year. However, having combed through the logs like a dutiful proctologist, we have found no evidence of this being true. Only 49 players have acquired more than 1,000 treats, and none of them have triggered the Cat in Hell bonus. Will it happen this year? Perhaps. Send us your logs if you are lucky enough to become one in a (half) million.

The next number is 456,038, which is how many attacks were won on the 31st of October 2020. This was a single-day record for Torn City at the time, although it was later surpassed by Valentine's Day 2021's total of 582,522. The weekly total of over 2.9 million attacking wins has never been beaten, but we have a feeling that this year it might be.
Next up, 4,535, because that is the highest treat total anyone has achieved in Torn City. Our second most-treated citizen has 3,941 treats, with the top five all above 2,400, and a further four players having more than 1,500 treats. As we said earlier, there are 49 players with more than 1,000 treats, and everyone in Torn has a total that is higher than minus one. Obviously.
The most common basket level is the bottom level, Spooky, which is held by 7,717 people. Here is the full table of baskets showing how many people hold each type:
7,717 - Spooky
2,845 - Creepy
3,035 - Freaky
2,902 - Frightful
2,798 - Haunting
3,162 - Shocking
1,415 - Terrifying
77 - Horrifying
4 - Petrifying
0 - Nightmarish
Last year, Chedburn estimated that it would take 4-5 years for someone to gain the number of treats required to summon a certain someone. However, if there's one thing we've noticed about our players, it's that some of you don't leave the house, and when you do you take Torn with you. So maybe, just maybe, we'll see the unseeable this year, and something foul will answer the call and rise from the depths.
Or your mother will just stay in the bath idk.
tl;dr: Trick or Treat begins at 12:00 TCT on the 25th. It ends at 12:00 TCT on the 1st.
