Trick or Treat Yo Self

Find out how you can win limited edition masks and high-value items by entering this year's Hallowe'en Community Events and auctions!
Hallowe'en traditions dictate that, for one night only, children may safely wander the streets and take candy from strangers. A tacit agreement between youngsters and deviants prevents unsavoury consequences from occurring, and that's why you never see kids go missing on October 31st. Probably. I don't know, I haven't researched that.

The same policy exists in Torn, hence the creation of our city's annual Trick or Treat event back in 2018. These festivities kick off exactly one week from today on the 25th of October. But first, we have the small matter of our Hallowe'en Community Events to attend to. Here's all the information you need in order to win yourself a limited edition mask, a welding helmet, and the contempt of the competition judges.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

We're running six community events this Hallowe'en, but only five of them require any talent - four if you discount dressing up. Each contest is now open for entries, and the players who place in the top three in the five talent-based events will win a Hallowe'en mask based on a notable horror movie character. I cannot reveal the name of this character just yet because it is too exciting and I want to keep you in suspense we haven't finished making it.

Players who finish in the top three will also receive the usual ribbons and prizes, a fact which is slightly more exciting than usual given that we've finally made the former wearable. Yes, that's right, after 423 pages of committee discussion and 2,731 hours of development time, competition ribbons can now be displayed on your player avatar.

Our first event is the Hallowe'en Carving Competition. To win, players are usually asked to carve a pumpkin in an interesting and skillful manner, with bonus (and imaginary) points given for designs that reference Torn. This year, we've opened up the event's requirements. We no longer care if your entry references Torn, and you can now carve avocados, kumquats, peaches, and whatever the hell you like. We are so good to you.

The second event is the Hallowe'en Dressup Competition. This one is pretty self-explanatory; all we want you to do is dress up in some stuff and show us. If I were a betting man - the fact I've gambled away my children's shoes tells you that I am - I would put good money on this contest being riddled with references to Squid Game, Alligator Loki, and that crying German girl from the euros.

Next up is a brand new event, the Hallowe'en Basket Competition. We want you to design and make a Hallowe'en Basket. Like the one you can collect from Sally's Sweet Shop, but better. You're welcome to just make a s****y orange pumpkin and paint a face on it if you want, but we'd prefer if you tried a little harder and made something interesting.

The Torn Movie Poster Competition is our fourth contest. Remember last year when we asked you to make a movie trailer? Yeah, don't do that. Instead, now we want you to draw up a poster for a horror movie set in Torn City. You can create this piece digitally or by hand, and you may use a limited amount of stock photography too. How limited? More than some, less than loads.

For our Trick or Treat Movie Competition, we want you to make a short film based on the concept of trick or treating in Torn. How would this work in our fair city? What weird happenings would come about as a result of this event? Once more, you may use a small amount of stock footage in your movie, but we'll always lean towards those that keep it to a minimum. And for all you pedants out there, the new rules allow you to make your movie as long as you like, but the judges will only watch up to the 60-second mark.

Now you'll have to find something else to complain about when you don't win.

HALLOWE'EN LUCKY DIP

Speaking of complaining, we're asking you to do precisely that in order to enter our final contest, the Hallowe'en Lucky Dip. We've cobbled together an amazing cache of over 200 prizes for this event including a Welding Helmet, Hazmat, Dual Weapons, Hallowe'en Masks, and other less good things. And you can win one or none of these items by simply posting a complaint in the Lucky Dip thread.

The accuracy, length, or strength of your complaint will have no bearing on your chances of victory, we've just noticed that some of you need a place to vent every so often or you're liable to s**t your pants. Entry is free to the Lucky Dip, but you may only enter once. When the competition closes, the winners will be randomly chosen from all of those who have posted in the thread. This contest and the other Community Events all close at 23:59 TCT on Sunday the 7th of November.

HALLOWE'EN AUCTIONS

Are you annoyed that we're giving away high-value prizes in return for carving a banana or complaining in a thread? Good, this pleases us. Now shut up and enter our Hallowe'en auctions, where Torn's well-heeled can use their illegally acquired hard-earned cash to try and win yet more fancy stuff to display in their bazaar forever.

Fernando and Tiny will be running these giveaways, each of which will begin on Friday the 22nd of October whenever we can be bothered to post them. The auctions will run for ten days and will be edited to end at 23:59 on Sunday the 31st of October. We've chosen this end time to give you something to do while you're standing lonesome in the corner at a house party dressed like sexy Thanos. Here's what you can bid on if you have the green:

Welding Helmet
Jack-O-Lantern
Devils Pitch Fork
Devil Toy (Staff collectible)
Jack-O-Lantern
Golden Broomstick

SOMETHING ELSE

There are nearly 200 additional Hallowe'en Masks that will be distributed outside of these events. Keep an eye on the forums, chat, ticker, and Torn social media for details on how to win one.
