Christmas Town Is On Its Way!!!

Find out when Christmas Town opens, what changes we've made, and when Duke's Dump Giveaway begins as we leap pelvis first into the Christmas period.
December the 14th provides players with a difficult choice. Do you head to Torn's one and only landfill site to take part in Duke's Dump giveaway? Or do you take the easy route and enjoy a leisurely stroll around Christmas Town?

Why not both! If you like fishing in the trash or humiliating yourself in return for prizes, the first day of Duke's Dump giveaway begins on Tuesday the 14th with a forum post at 9am TCT in General Discussion. And once you've hosed yourself off and pulled the used tissues out of your throat, Christmas Town will open just a few hours later. Here's what you need to know about this year's event.

What is Christmas Town?

Christmas Town is a festive wonderland full of mini-games, merriment, and most excellent prizes that can be explored from the 14th to the 31st of December. Access to CT is staggered over the 14th, with players prioritised according to how abusive they've been to staff this year randomly granted access in batches throughout the day.

There are many different Christmas Town maps to explore, with the official CT map accompanied by a number of player-created worlds, each of which can be rated by the Torn community. Loot can be found strewn across both the official and player-created maps, as can mini-games, locked chests, and the keys which open them. Just make sure you avoid running into the Grinch, as this spinachy little tart will send you to the first aid tent if he catches you.

Improvements and Fixes

Chedburn's Tuesday patch list will explain more about what we've done to improve Christmas Town this year, but the main differences you'll notice are the higher loot payout gained by exploring Snow Globe maps, and a change to the way prizes are earned via mini-games.

The headline news is that maps with a Snow Globe now provide 50% more loot than those without them. Snow Globe ornaments are awarded by staff to maps deemed interesting or challenging enough to merit special verified status. What this means is that loot runs - maps that make you run in a circle for hours on end just to earn some imaginary digital items - may no longer be worth your time.

We hope that this change will convince players to actually enjoy themselves and explore some of the incredibly creative and intricately designed worlds that Torn's finest mapmakers have created. Verified Christmas Town maps are denoted by either a question mark or a snowglobe symbol in the Prize column - a snowglobe will appear if you have played the map previously and discovered one, otherwise, you'll see a question mark.

Another major change we've made sees most mini-games now provide Prize Coupons instead of items - yes, we are challenging the monopoly of Charles Entertainment Cheese. Prize Coupons can be exchanged for items at the Prize Tent, allowing you to choose the rewards you receive once you've earned enough coupons. The only exceptions to this are Pick Your Present, Pot, and the CT version of Spin The Wheel, each of which still provides actual proper prizes.

Custom Maps

Last year we ran a mapmaking competition in order to increase the number of high-quality player maps available, and while no such competition is being run this year (the last one took us three f***ing months to judge), players can still create their own maps using the custom editor. Should we bring back the mapmaking contest in 2022, any maps made this year will be eligible for entry so long as they were not entered in 2020.

You can access the map editor by clicking this link, and while a few changes have been made to the editor since its release, Proxima's guide remains the most useful resource for aspiring world-builders looking to get to grips with the tool. But if that sounds like too much hard work and hot-brain time, then we would at least encourage you to explore some of the player-created maps that placed highly in our 2020 Make a Map competition.

Give Me Tips, Newspaper Man

Tips? You want tips? Here are some tips on how to play Christmas Town and have the most bestest fun time and win lots of nice prizes.

Note: The following comments represent the opinions of the players providing them. The Torn City Times bears no responsibility for their accuracy or usefulness. If they are s**t, hospitalise whoever posted them.

Paul says:

  • Avoid the pot luck mini-game - this is as good as gambling, huge $ sink
  • Try multiple maps - this should be fun, not a mindless clicking activity.
  • Save your Christmas Bucks until the end and then buy the bottle that is going to get you the most return on investment.
  • You can get daily gifts from Santa who roams around most maps.
  • Ornaments, similar to snow globes, can be obtained from chests (and mini-games, I think?) which will increase your item spawn rate. These carry over year to year and are great for the long run.
  • Player-made maps will spawn snow globes as prizes for those who complete them. Completing may require more time and intellectual investment, but these CT items (non-tradable) will help you significantly in the long-run

  • You should definitely do all available Minigames every day for max loot and of course for those increased CT-map awareness ornaments if you don't have them all yet. The more you have = the more loot you get.
  • Remember to look closely for keys, they are easily overseen and the hardest to find!
  • Combination chests are just there for your eyes, so you can take your time solving those. The best way to solve the combinations: type 123, 456, 789. In most cases, you will be able to say which combination is asked for them.
  • When you see a bronze, silver, or golden chest you should hurry though, because they are visible and available for everyone!
  • If you want more loot and really max your earnings it is worth it to visit other maps beneath the original one. I love to do the dungeon there for example as there will be additional spawns, especially for chests, as not so many people are there huddled together on one spot.

ArttiIsGod says:

  • Stick with a map that is easiest to navigate which is not the main map.
  • Collect every shop once a day your loot. Then use tutorials to collect snowglobes on different maps.
  • Anything you collect: chest keys, ornaments, snowglobes will not be lost, you will keep them for the next year.
  • Everyone can see chests that can be opened via keys, but only you see gifts, code chests, and ornaments. If you cannot find a certain chest e.g. gold chest for your golden key, no worries, next year you have another chance.
  • Don't play Pot. It is a gambling game and you can lose your hard-earned cans and candies.
  • Christmas bucks can be traded in the beer tent for a glass of beer - very useful during the beer event - or you can trade them elsewhere. Do your research as to what is the best value for your bucks. Christmas Angel and other similar items have no use in-game. Don't fall for this trap.

Chedburn says

  • Players can only receive prize coupons 5 times per day, so you can choose which mini-games to play.
  • Save your prize coupons! You'll receive more prizes when exchanging lots of coupons at once.

tl:dr: Christmas Town opens at some point on the 14th. Don't ask me when. It's different for everyone.
