Patch List #221

Ranked Warring

After a successful period of testing the Ranked Warring feature was released in early December, with factions now able to wage war against one another to earn ranks, respect, and rewards. Ranked Warring is a 1v1 faction warfare system whereby two sides fight in a tug-of-war style format to earn respect until one side has achieved the required lead over the other.

The results of ranked wars are used to assign ranks to the factions involved, and over time, this will lead to a fluid and competitive system whereby factions must compete against others of similar strength and activity levels in order to maintain their ranking. The newspaper article goes into more detail about what is involved in Ranked Warring and how you can take part, as does the Wiki, which will constantly evolve as we make further tweaks to the system.

Advanced Weapons and Armor

One of the major draws of the Ranked Warring system is the provision of Advanced Weapon and Armor caches as rewards. There are five Advanced caches available, each of which contains one item of advanced weaponry or armor:

- Melee Cache : Contains a Clubbing, Slashing, or Piercing weapon
- Small Arms Cache : Contains a Submachine gun or Pistol
- Medium Arms Cache : Contains a Rifle or Shotgun
- Heavy Arms Cache : Contains a Machine Gun or Heavy Artillery weapon
- Armor Cache: Contains a piece of Advanced Armor

Advanced Weaponry and Armor pieces vary in quality and availability ranging from yellow (common, low standard) through orange to red (rarest, high standard), but all of them will be significantly better than their standard-issue variants. Not only are their stats much higher, but they also come with class-specific bonuses too - orange and red weapons may possess up to two bonuses. See the newspaper article for more information.

Weapon and Armor Bonuses

The introduction of Advanced Weapons brought with it a range of new weapon bonuses, some of which were teased in the aforementioned newspaper article. The Weapon Bonus Wiki has now expanded upon this selection and listed all of the bonuses discovered by the community so far, with these ranging from buffs to hits on certain body parts through to mug boosts and Damage Over Time effects.

Of the 58 new weapon and armor bonuses, only six of them apply to armors, with each armor bonus specifically assigned to a certain armor type. We have decided to avoid listing the armor bonuses to allow the community to find them for themselves, but the six types of armor available via Armor caches are Riot, Assault, Dune, Delta, Marauder, EOD.

Each armor's unique bonus applies to both the individual pieces and sets as a whole. For example, if you are wearing only a Riot Helmet, you will enjoy a bonus level of protection if you are hit in the head, but not if you are hit in the groin. Likewise, if you are only wearing Riot Pants, a hit to the head will result in the normal amount of damage, whereas a hit to the groin will be reduced in impact. Players who are lucky enough to own a full set of matching armor enjoy an additional overall boost to the bonus value of their individual armors.

Due to the additional combat complexity created by these bonuses, tooltips have now been added to attacking models so that players are aware of which armor types their opponent is wearing.

Patch List #222

Dollar Sale System

Patch List #222 saw the introduction of a limitation system applied to all items that are sold for one dollar. One dollar sales are popular in Torn's bazaars, with many players running them outside of the traditional Black Friday event. Unfortunately, it remains the case that some players have an advantage over others when it comes to buying up $1 items, despite our best efforts to curtail the influence of scripts and geographical location upon these sales.

To remedy the situation, we have introduced a system that limits the availability of $1 items to a small number of randomly chosen people. It is hoped that this random element will reduce the impact of scripts and connection speeds when $1 sales are run. We are actively monitoring the parameters behind this system to ensure that it works as intended while also remaining fair and reasonable in its distribution of access to $1 items.

Searchable Honor Bars

Player names displayed via honor bars are now searchable as if they were basic text. It was previously the case that areas of Torn which display long lists of players, such as the hospital or faction pages, were unsearchable using browser find functions due to player names being displayed solely via honor bar graphics. This has now been changed so that every honor bar also contains searchable text.

Patch List #223

Small Explosive Devices

Small Explosive Devices no longer stack infinitely upon existing hospital time, and will instead simply refresh hospital time up to a limit of five hours. SEDs are items that can be placed into a parcel and sent to an opponent, causing the recipient to become hospitalized upon opening.

SEDs are also commonly used by traders and other players to self-hospitalize in order to protect themselves from muggings, and before this change, players were able to repeatedly open additional SED parcels while incapacitated to extend their hospital time to the desired amount. This is no longer possible. Using an additional SED after already opening one will merely restore your SED hospital time back to five hours.

For example, if you hospitalize yourself using an SED at 10:00, you will remain there until 15:00. Under the old system, using an additional SED immediately would then see your hospitalization time extended by five hours to 20:00. Under the new system, additional SED hospitalizations will simply refresh your hospitalization time to five hours, rather than stacking on top of any remaining time.

The use of an SED while hospitalized for any other reason will have differing effects depending on how long you are scheduled to be in the hospital. For example, if a failed attack puts you in hospital for 18 minutes, and you then use an SED while in the hospital, these two times will not stack, and you will simply be hospitalized for 5 hours. If your hospital time is longer than 5 hours, your hospital time will remain unaffected by the use of an SED.

Christmas Town

A new and improved version of Christmas Town opened to the public shortly after Patch List #223 was released, with several new features accompanied by Dark Mode support and a major tweak to the loot spawn formula.

The new mini-game Typocalpyse is one of several CT games that now provide Prize Coupons instead of prizes. Once earned, Prize Coupons can then be exchanged at the newly-created Prize Tent, allowing players to choose their rewards once enough coupons have been collected.

Another way players can earn items from Christmas Town is by finding loot that is dumped randomly across the map. Maps that have been granted a Snow Globe now have a 50% higher spawn rate than maps that do not. Snow Globes are awarded by staff to maps that are sufficiently complex or interesting enough to deserve them - loot runs are not included. Christmas Town will close at noon TCT on the 31st of December.

Patch List #224

Matchmaking

The Ranked Warring matchmaking system that assigns factions to their opponents has been modified slightly. Matchmaking pairs factions together using certain values, and if a match cannot be found initially, these values are reduced until a match is found.

Upon Ranked Warring's initial rollout, a faction's highest value was being reduced by 50% instead of being divided by 1.5, which incorrectly brought some factions within the range of unsuitable opponents. For example, 100,000 was being reduced to 50,000 instead of 66,666. This has now been rectified, although please note that we are still limiting the number of matches that can be made in these early stages.
