2022 in Torn City: Your Predictions

sugarvalves [1963573] —
Which faction will be destroyed? Who will become the top Torn player? And which new features will we see? Find out the community's response to all these and more in our roundup of your 2022 forecasts.
2022 is finally upon us, and with the dawning of the new year come expectations and anxieties over what the next twelve months will bring. Torn's developers are notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to ongoing projects, so to find out what awaits us, we've taken to the streets to ask our fellow citizens what they think will happen to Torn City in 2022.

Updates

As I began trawling through the hundreds of predictions sent to my inbox, it immediately became clear that some players misunderstood the brief.

"I think there will be more changes in Pakistan." - Nway

Of the Torn-focused forecasts we received, many referenced Crimes 2.0, with the playerbase split as to whether or not this much-anticipated feature will be released this year. Torn is unable to comment officially on the current status of Crimes 2.0, but the latest Patch List shows us that several developers are hard at work on this as a priority.

The Patch List also lists Organized Crimes 2.0 as in development, alongside an Item Market rebuild, Poker updates, and Chats 2.0. Outside of these confirmed projects, the playerbase predicted a number of aesthetic additions to Torn, such as new clothes, new properties, and the continued improvement of underperforming companies.

"I predict that Zoos and other less than savvy companies will get a deserved boost." - MorgothBauglir

"I predict that in 2022 we will see Theater companies boosted with reworked specials which will greatly incraese their popularity. The number of active theater companies will probably triple or quadruple." -
Matchlock

As the person tasked with harassing Chedburn on company updates, I can give a little insight into whether or not these predictions are correct. Companies are targeted for improvement based on their popularity among directors and employees, with our goal being to raise the total companies and employees to an unspecified amount.

The five least popular companies in Torn are, in ascending order; Zoos, Cyber Cafes, Gents Strip Clubs, Theaters, and the Ladies Strip Club. Changes to the two strip clubs have already been finalized and are awaiting implementation, and once those companies have been sorted, we can then begin to look at the remaining companies on that list. Sadly, none of our prospective company specials will be used to fulfill this player's naughty little request:

"I would love to see prostitutes implemented." - BDE

Take it to trade chat, mate. One less gross update that many players suggested would come this year is a further increase in the bookies limit of $100m per match. However, since it's only a few months since the cap was increased from $10m, we don't expect this to be raised imminently.

"Hello. I think in 2022, a new perk branch gonna be released." - ElCaponee

The Torn City Times is unaware of any perk changes in the pipeline, but one addition that is inevitable is the ability for factions to unlock 100k chains. But given that we've only just seen 50k chains unlocked in November, this is another update that we're not expecting soon, at least not in the first few months of 2022. Here are a few more random player predictions to round off this section:

"The all important sewer level comes to Torn"
- ecks-rn

"More pawn shop use and items."
- Dizzill09

"Torn Devs will finally snap and place a Thunderdome in the middle of Torn City." - Mr-Rabbit

"Another change to medical that will p*** off revivers but make everyone else really happy like a buff to med items or reduced cooldown."
- Anon

The Economy

In a rather worrying development, large numbers of people have predicted that 2022 will bring us a crash in the stock market. Could they be right?

"Major stock market crash since the irl market is way overdue for a correction." -
FuzzyRight1

In the real world, widespread investor panic can indeed lead to a stock market crash, but thankfully, Torn's own stock market doesn't work like that. The behavior of Torn's stock market is based on real-world stocks to an extent, but in a super-secret way using a super-secret formula that is more closely guarded than the colonel's eleven herbs and spices. Here are a few more specific stock predictions for your consideration.

"I predict that the weather (in the northern hemisphere) will be cold until mid-april, warm until may, hot until august, cool until october, cold until december.
I also predict that the price of FHC will rise to $800/share."
- Siriusblackck

"At some point another stock will get released. I think it'll be a nerve equivalent to MCS." -
randomember

The introduction of Stocks 3.0 allows us to add new stocks to the TCSE quite easily. We at the TCT are unaware of any plans to create new stocks in the near future, but given that we've only seen two additions so far in the form of Alcoholics Synonymous and Munster, it doesn't seem too outlandish to suggest that additional stocks may be seen at some point in the new year.

Of course, when we do introduce a new stock, its dividend payout may have a knock-on effect on the value of certain items. This is true regardless of the nature of the dividend, as new stocks will likely draw investors away from others, potentially reducing the number of dividend-derived items in circulation. Here are a few predictions regarding the item market.

"Alcohol sales might boost more due to a seemingly lower CT bucks drop rate, and at least one large faction war that should prove profitable for players selling certain items." -
Phoenix420

"More players means donator pack pawn price will drop to a record low and so will cans."
- Anon

"I mean since your asking my prediction for 2022 is trout. Trout will be even more of a staple than it is right now and I plan to help it along as torn's most knowledgeable source on torn and the person with with most trout in a display cabinet in all of torn you can trust me when I say. I personally guarantee it. Trout will rise."
- DirtyTroutBoy

If you want to know where the price of items is heading then the best place to look is the Torn City Times Market Report. In our November edition, we predicted a number of interesting changes to the way booze, candies, and weaponry prices will behave in the new year. Our next edition is due in the first week of January when we'll take a look at how the recent increase in the value of Xanax may be the start of a massive price rise for Torn's most essential drug.

"An item that might possibly be manipulated would be Xanax. With a whole lot of wars upcoming with the release of ranked warring, factions seem to be stocking xanax up for their members to use. One of the reasons why I think the prices would be increasing. Also here a feet, just in case it is needed for some unknown verification purposes." - Lafat

Factions

One of the most common predictions we received was that the introduction of Ranked Warring will change the power balance among the Torn faction scene. Most factions are expected to turn their attention to this new feature once the holiday season is over, and when they do, many feel that the increased activity requirement will cause burnout, leading to the loss of territories and members by factions who fail to plan accordingly.

Another frequent suggestion was that factions will find a way to manipulate or monetize aspects of the Ranked Warring system in order to receive the most rewards possible.

"Rank warring will be rolled back bcos factions will sell war losses for billions lol." - Hilda

"Dirty bombs being used by a faction fighting for the Diamond rank in ranked warring."
- Nuvak

"NS will match up with NSII for a ranked war."
- H3110

"SA will find a way to farm Weapon caches."
- Snowbeast

"Since ranked wars have consolation prizes, you'll see some racketeering minds produce shady ideals that would be exploited and will become a new business/industry for enterprising minds."
- Henry_H_Holmes

The weapons and armor offered via Ranked Warring are potentially game-changing, so it will be no surprise to us if some of the top factions start to prioritize this format over things like training and chaining, as our next commenter suggests.

"Chaining by itself will become less frequent due to ranked warring, due to the fast nature of ranked wars most factions will usually only go to about 2.5k hits more often. Running on natural E instead of stacking for said wars."
- 53R0

But many of you feel that the biggest impact of Ranked Warring will be felt mostly on the City Map. 2021 has already seen a major shakeup of the territorial makeup of the city with the dismantling of Subversive Alliance's western empire and the fall of the Animal Kingdom alliance. You would expect that SA and Ride or Die will now try to create a new empire in the east, while Monarch ties up the west, but will the rewards for Ranked Warring prove too tempting to allow these plans to come to fruition?

"I am predicting a large increase in proxy factions or even brand new factions emerging due to the recent release of ranked warring. This will allow the larger more established factions, particularly those in the top 10 HoF, to procure large quantities of the weapon/armor caches. Thus enabling them to have an edge over the other top tier factions."
- Kamakazie99

This is an interesting prospect. The desire to hold prime territories while simultaneously maintaining a high rank may prove too much for some over-ambitious factions, and this could lead to all manner of outcomes. Some factions will unite on friendly terms, others will corral a legion of proxies under duress, and some may cease to exist altogether.

"I think that CR fam and PT fam will merge. They will cut down from 7 total factions to 4 warring factions and 1 Revive faction. Only taking the most active and hungry players with them. If that merge happens I will have to go back to CR fam." - BEER

"I feel one of the biggest factions in torn will be destroyed during 2022. Be it from war, or internal conflict. 2022 will be chaotic." - ZickyJackz

Events

The winner of our "what the f**k are you talking about" competition is Invincbile_, who somehow manages to predict something we've said definitely won't happen followed by something that obviously will.

"The year 2022, we will definitely be having dog tags competition in the mid-September before Halloween. We may also faced the easter bunny boss or perhaps a new NPC boss would appear for the easter week."
- Invincible_

The Easter Bunny comes to haunt our streets every April, and we've already confirmed that Dog Tags will return to the calendar in May 2022, so good job I guess? Nobody is quite sure what to make of DT this time around, with some saying it'll be incredibly popular and others thinking that the playerbase will mostly ignore it. One common opinion is that new players will do well in this year's event, as for anyone who joined since December 2020, this will be their first shot at the title.

"No one likes Dog Tags being moved to earlier in the year. An industrious noob claims the crown." - BotaJ

"I think the top taggers from yesteryear will be too distracted by faction activities in May and a noob like me will never have a better chance to take the crown."
- Anon

The movement of Dog Tags to May prompted many to call for a replacement event to be introduced in November, and this is something a number of you have predicted will happen. As Torn's resident events guy, I can confirm we haven't got anything planned for November 2022 just yet, because the very reason we moved Dog Tags was to break up the calendar of attacking events.

"New event introduction in the month of August, because August is boring now." - Druggy

That prediction could be more accurate, as July / August does appear to be the best time for something shiny and new to be introduced. In the past I've mentioned that I am working on a few new event ideas, including one based around the Olympics, but there is still much to be figured out if they are to be made a reality - watch this space!

"Torn City will be hit by a pandemic, causing TORN to go into lockdown." -
Hades_Phoenix

"Maybe a new event about butt kissing."
- Mickeysf

One event we know will return is the Ultimate Racing Tournament, whose schedule will be announced in the next few days via the newspaper.

"Storm1968 will win the URT again and have to give me the second Bugatti because he promised."
- Ali_Looya

Later on in the year, we'll see the return of Halloween's Trick or Treat event. Many of you were unsure as to whether M'aol (formerly known as Cthulhu) would finally be unlocked in 2022, with the predictions being split fairly evenly between yes, no, and f*** knows. You're also unsure as to what M'aol will do when he arrives, with some of you suggesting an international NPC loot hunt, and others believing his arrival will have effects similar to a Dirty Bomb detonation.

Chedburn has gone on record as saying he thinks we'll have to wait until 2023 or 2024 to find out, as based on the current treat totals, it will require a herculean effort to earn enough treats to release M'aol before then. But if someone does manage this feat, many of you believe that Proxima will be the one to do it.

"Proxima releases Cthulhu and it's an NPC that after an epic battle across multiple countries, with thousands of participants, drops a single jawbreaker as loot." - Qfiffle

Players

Our final section covers your predictions on what will happen to the playerbase this year. On the gameplay front, many of you are convinced that the introduction of Advanced Weapons and Armors will cause a major change in the way Torn is played, with new metas and builds forcing everyone into a rethink.

"As factions try to procure the best and very rare “red” weapons/armors, many individuals might turn this into their main hustle as they will become war sluts to accumulate the weapons/armors to sell."
- Captain_Harlock

"One day most of the top players will all have ranked war weapons and each battle will feel a bit more diverse." -
Profy

"A lot more people are going to run around with blowguns and (once expensive) primaries."
- blockhead77

As the circulation of advanced items increases, they will become more affordable, eventually forming part of many players' standard loadouts. But with so many options on offer, it may take time for optimal builds to be designed, and this could see a few surprise results crop up in both individual battles and wars.

"2022 will see a massive shift in how stats and armor loadouts are going to change - with Warring crates becoming more common throughout the year, the previously unchallenged defense metas' taking a strong downward dive with weapons that feature Weaken (Defense debuff), Irradiate (1-3 hr Radiation Sickness debuff), and Motivation (10% bonuses applied to self, up to 10x)."
- 4n4rchist

Another thing the new Ranked Warring mechanics will create is drama, not just between factions, but on a personal level too. Many of you think that the playerbase won't take long to find loopholes in the ranked warring system, and that rigged matches will have to be dealt with before long.

"MightyGoober finds a way to exploit Ranked Warring, both in using and reporting it. People use the exploit and complain when they get caught."
-
Penetration

"There's a very high chance that a fac will do a ranked war and a member with enough permissions will nick the caches and flee (like a vault thief), then someone will make a forum post crying about it and the thief will get bountied to hell."
- Emforus

Outside of Ranked Warring, many of you are predicting some big changes at the top of the stats table. 2021 already bore witness to one incredible feat of training, as Shaz1 overtook Bodybagger to become the top player in the game with 520 trillion total stats. Some of you believe that this is merely the beginning and that more stat beasts are on their way to challenge the established elite.

"Bodybagger won't be in the top 5 strongest players in game."
- YellowFlash

"Bodybagger is going to retake his positions at #1 for battlestats."
- Cheb

"There will be a new 1# rank player in torn."
- Beatereater

Of course, stats aren't everything, as there are many other ways a player can become famous (or infamous) in Torn City. Here are a few more predictions on how Torn's great unwashed will behave this year.

"We see our first trillion-dollar RR game." - Andyman

"There will be a multi-day outage that gets blamed on something stupid like too many plastic swords, ranked warring will lead to massive butthurt and TMB will return to its former glory!" -
Nadbash

"DUDE DUDE will return (but no one cares cause its sort of expected)" - JPills

"Dekloren will apologize, leave fed, then end up back in fed again within 24 hours."
- Anon

"Staff will finally discover zahid's restart."
- Anon

"Bogie will win a holy grail lotto and people will accuse him of rigging the game."
- Whom

"I'm sure there will be some sort of big scandal, maybe in factions or some interpersonal player thing, filled with manufactured drama that in reality isn't a big deal but people can't possibly see the forest for the trees." - bogie

Will any of these predictions come true, or are they a load of old hogwash made up by simpletons in return for a Donator Pack. I guess we'll all just have to stick around in Torn City to find out. Happy New Year everyone!
