TornCon 2022 Returns

Unofficial community meetup event returns with the second-ever TornCon scheduled to run on August 6th in Washington DC.
Planning and preparation has begun for the second annual TornCon 2022 in Washington DC. Players from all factions and sectors are invited to attend on August 6, 2022 in America’s Capital.

What Is TornCon?

TornCon is an unofficial meetup organized by and for the players of Torn City (Torn is in no way affiliated with this event). For those who missed the article about last year's event, you can catch up HERE. It was everything you'd imagine a TornCon to be with the expected ratio of nerds, trolls, cargo shorts, and guy-to-girl ratios.

Stretch and Andyman were in attendance, and both agreed that the tunnel at the Chicago Museum of Illusions was their favorite memory. Personally, I enjoyed the amazing spread of food. It was so delicious, and there were so many things to try!

"It's really a great way to finally put faces with those people you have spent days/months/years talking to online," Stretch explains, and he is hoping even more people attend this year. Andyman is also looking forward to meeting a broad range of new people, adding that "our real-life bubbles are so small and typically not very diverse. Meeting other random people who share a common interest is a great life experience, even if you don't realize it right away."

0rganicMechanic is looking forward to seeing TRex at this year's event, because "Every party can use some Cajun." TRex played tour guide at my first faction meet-up in New Orleans in 2019. We will see if he shows his face this year for a reunion! Personal interactions like this are what TornCon is all about, according to 0rganicMechanic, who enjoys getting to meet the real people behind the username: "I see people get hung up on 'I don't know if I want to go because ___ is going' when in my experience with this and other games the online personas rarely match up to the real thing."

While I understand these concerns, it's important to remember that most people's online persona doesn't represent them in real life. Many people play up to certain stereotypical roles in Torn City for personal entertainment purposes or otherwise. While I respect that some people may not be comfortable exposing their true selves, I must say that the Torn community is one of the best gaming communities I've been a part of. I really look forward to meeting everyone who decides to attend.

Who's Who of TornCon 2022

I can confirm that there will be some international attendees at this year's event, with last year's Elimination winner Lilith flying in from Europe: "I am just very excited to meet everyone I have talked to and played alongside with for years." She is most excited to meet Bones at the event, and this feeling is mutual, with the pair having known each other for several years. As Bones reveals: "We've been friends since 2017 and haven't been able to meet up yet...I actually am just excited to meet everyone though (even Hornz). It's gonna be so fun."

ThtAstronautGuy will also be attending from Canada. He comments, "I'm just looking forward to going around and doing random [expletive] with you guys - especially that dinner." I'm currently finalizing the menu for TornCon attendees, and let me tell you it looks mouthwatering! I'm hoping that this alone will tempt a few more people from outside of the States to join us at TornCon 2022.

As for our US attendees, Zuni will be joining us this year: "I was quite sad that I missed last years Torn meetup in Chicago but am quite thankful that I will be attending this year... The ladies of NS and a few others were talking about visiting the zoo or museums...sounds like a good time if you ask me."

Jinx will also be attending and stated that he's honestly just looking forward to "meeting people and creating new friendships...As I generally stay in the shadows on Torn and its forums, I don't know many people other than those from Nite, EQ and Savage Plague."

When asked about who they were most excited to see, Zuni replied, "I would like for a certain someone to attend, and they know who they are. I cannot deny nor confirm that they may already be in attendance, but would be very awesome if they were. P.S. I hear a top contender for Miss Torn will be attending." Sounds like Zuni is looking for some love. Reach out to him for a room share or a good time!

Booking Ahead

If you don't feel comfortable attending TornCon on your own, then why not rope in a few of your factionmates and share a couple rooms! There is a block of rooms reserved at a discount for TornCon attendees at the JW Marriott, Washington D.C. Both King Bed and Double Bed Rooms are available based on preference at the rate of $199.00 plus taxes. These rates and rooms are available for booking until July 8, 2022. To reserve your room at these rates, click HERE.

For those who would like to combine their trip to TornCon with a sightseeing tour, the hotel is conveniently within walking distance of many major attractions including the White House, the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, the United States Capitol, museums, restaurants, and more. For the more adventurous, the hotel is also located close to a metro station for easy access to other areas of the city.

But don't go wandering too far, because on August 6, we have dinner reservations at City Tap Penn Quarter DC for food and drinks at 6pm.

Dinner will include appetizers, your choice of entrée from a limited menu, desserts, and non-alcoholic beverages. Limited seating is available at this time. You may reserve your spot by paying $60 per person to 0rganicMechanic and include your Torn name and number in the payment for our reference. We have both Paypal and Venmo for your convenience. Cost includes tax and gratuity. We will be seated in direct proximity to the bar for anyone who is interested in opening a tab.

Just like last year, I will post my itinerary for everyone in the discord channel [HERE], and those who want to tag along for activities throughout the weekend are more than welcome. 0rganicMechanic adds, "I was looking forward to the Air and Space Museum but since that will be closed for renovations, I think I most want to see the National Building Museum." I'll definitely be making those dreams come true.

I'm also brainstorming a possible contest. Torn Trivia was recommended by a few attendees. Bones tossed out a real-life dog tags competition. She added, "The prize is probably the loss of your dignity." Lilith warns, "Not a dad jokes one because Stretch is attending and that's cheating." Noted. Zuni thought maybe a team-based Mackelmore thrift store competition for the silliest wall-sitting costume would be fun. I think we should call that contest "Goodwill hunting." Just flexing my puns there. (I can feel Stretch shaking in his hazmat suit.) Regardless of the contest, we are going to have so much fun.

Can’t wait to see you there!

Yours,
Evaline
