Ten day event begins Monday at noon. Tag stealing mechanics amended. Personal tag and NPC bonuses slashed. Public scores made available for first time.
After an extended hiatus, the Dog Tag Tournament returns tomorrow, with tags assigned and therefore stealable from noon on Monday the 16th of May. After much deliberation between the developers and committee, we’ve made a few crucial changes to this year’s event. Here’s our rundown of how Dog Tags 2022 is going to work.
Ten Days
The most apparent change, given that we’re talking about this mid-May, is that the tournament has been shortened from its usual duration of 21 days to 10 days. Dog Tags begins at 12:00 TCT on the 16th of May and ends at the same time on the 26th of May.
Steal Tag
If you wish to take a tag from an opponent, hospitalizing, leaving, or mugging them will no longer suffice. A fourth option, Steal Tag, must now be selected upon defeating a player in order to take a tag from them. This option guarantees a tag upon victory and will put the victim in hospital for a period between 90-105 minutes.
This hospital duration range is fixed and will not be affected by bonuses that reduce or increase hospital time. This addition will limit the number of tags players can lose during inactive periods now that tag payouts are guaranteed.
Top 25
Defeating someone and using the Steal Tag option doesn’t just guarantee you a tag, it also means you will receive one of your opponent's best 25 tags based on score. The tag you receive will be chosen at random from the top 25 tags in your opponent’s possession at the time you defeat them. If your opponent has fewer than 25 tags, the tag you receive will still be picked at random from however many they have.
It is believed that this change will result in actives targeting each other instead of simply farming inactives, resulting in the best tags moving around more frequently.
Assists
Assists now provide players with a 25% chance to steal a tag when and only when the player who makes the final hit chooses the Steal Tag option. There is no limit to this mechanic besides those imposed on the number of group attackers in any one fight. We hope this option will lead to organised groups of tag-hunters targeting those at the top of the table, as this will ensure the leaderboard remains dynamic and competitive for longer.
Personal Tag Bonus
To prevent the competition from feeling redundant for those who lose their own tag early, the bonus for keeping your own tag has been reduced from 10x its value to just 2x its value. So if your tag is worth 15 points, you will now receive 30 points if you still hold it when the competition ends, as opposed to 150. If you are attacked, and your opponent selects the Steal Tag option, your tag’s value remains 1x for the purpose of identifying your top 25 tags.
Tag Values
No changes have been made to the way tag values increase upon being stolen. Each tag has a base score value determined by the holder’s level or their special status as a Staff member or NPC. This value increases by +1 each time it is stolen by another person.
For example, as a level 22, my tag is worth 15 initially, but its value increases to 16 when someone steals it, and 17 if someone then steals it from them, and so on and so forth. The only exception to this is after having returned a tag to its owner, re-stealing it immediately will not add a point to its value.
NPCs Reduced
In previous years, the collection of NPC tags was seen to unduly influence the results of the Dog Tag Tournament, with the winners either having gathered them early on, or being seen to purchase them later on in the competition. To remedy this, we have reduced the value of all NPC tags from 500 to 100. Staff tag values will remain at 100, and the existing values for player tags based on levels will also stay the same.
Public Scores
Your current Dog Tag score will now be available on your profile page. Not only will this help tag collectors identify those who aren't taking part, but it will also enable everyone to see who the top tag collectors are and target them accordingly, thus ensuring that those who gain an early advantage are unable to hide, making them much easier to catch.
While a full public scoreboard is not yet currently available, one could easily be put together by the community or in private since this data will be available via the API.

Relevant Peers
The Dog Tags page will now contain extra data regarding your peers in the competition. A panel called Easy Pickings will show the names of three inactive players at your stat range who still have dog tags. If no such players exist, players who are lower or higher than your stat range will be displayed instead.

Additionally, a panel named Superiors will show three active players with a higher score than you, and once more, these players will be within your stat range as a priority, with this range expanded if no suitable players are available. This data will be refreshed hourly.
Victory Criteria
The criteria for determining your score and position in the tournament remains unchanged. Your score, which can now be seen during the competition via your profile page, is based on the total value of the tags you have in your possession at the time. When the Dog Tags tournament ends at 12:00 TCT on May 26th, your score will be used to determine your place on the leaderboard and subsequent competition token reward.
Honors and Prizes
No additional honors or prizes have been added to this year’s event. KIA is awarded for collecting 50 tags during one tournament. Departure is awarded for collecting 250 tags. The players who place first, second, and third will win Gold, Silver, and Bronze Dog Tags. The players who finish 4th-25th will win a Metal Dog Tag item.
tl;dr: Dog Tags begins 12:00 TCT on Monday 16th. Ends 12:00 TCT Thursday 26th. Attack players and steal their tags to earn honors, competition tokens, and a dog tag item.
