Read our rundown of the new and improved rules for Dog Tags 2022, along with a few helpful pointers and reasons why you should participate this year.
It's time to take tags and kick ass, and I'm all out of ass. The Dog Tags Tournament opens at noon today, the 20th of June, thus beginning ten days of damage, death, and detagging. But what exactly are the rules this year? What should you do and when? And why is everyone taking part? Let's find out.
Tags Released
At noon TCT on the 20th of June, every single player, staff member, and NPC will be assigned a tag. Each tag is worth a certain amount of points, and your task is to attack people and take their tags, with the goal being to amass as high a points tally as possible before the competition ends at noon on June 29th. The full rules can be read here.
"I'm excited for the competition because it's a kleptomaniac's paradise." - Nemesis93
Tag Values
Not all tags are made equal. A level 100 player's tag is worth 75 points, whereas a level 10 player is worth just 10 points. The only exceptions to this are staff members and NPCs, whose tags are both worth 100 points each. The value of a tag increases by +1 each time it is stolen by another person unless you have just returned it and re-stolen it immediately. You can find out more about tag values by viewing this table on the Wiki.
"I’m looking forward to participating in dog tags for the second time. It’s a great opportunity to gain tokens as well as work on attacking merits like finishing hits and weapon exp. I may even work on a traveling merit to help keep my tags safe!" - SpeedSkateR
Tag Protection
Your personal tag cannot be stolen until you have made three attacks during the competition. The only players this does not apply to are those who have been inactive for two weeks. Once you havemade three attacks acquired three tags the chains will be removed from the graphic below, which can be seen on the Dog Tags Competition page.

NOTE: The criteria to unlock your personal tag has now changed. You must steal three tags in order to unlock it, rather than make three attacks.
Personal Tag
Your personal tag is worth 2x its value to you than to other players - this bonus was previously 10x. This means that a level 100 player with a 75-point tag will now receive 150 points if they manage to keep hold of it when the competition ends. If your personal tag is stolen after this point, you can see who currently owns it on the Dog Tags competition page. Please note that your personal tag doesn't provide any score to you until you havecompleted the requisite three attacks. stolen three tags from other players.
"As a furry, I am typically picked on by a majority of communities, but it has never bothered me because; if you lose to a furry it's a complete loss, but if you win against a furry... do you rlly win? I think not. Or maybe. Doesn't matter to me, I'm just here to have my own fun." - Stinky
100% Chance
If you defeat a player and they have at least one available tag in their collection, you will definitely receive a tag upon defeating them, regardless of whether you hospitalise, leave, or mug them. If your opponent has your tag, you are guaranteed to receive it back if you defeat them. We have removed the Steal Tag option that was proposed back in May.
"Am I gonna take part in dog tags this year? f**k YES!. It's the most exciting event of the year. Doubled my battle stats from the last comp. Hitting harder and smarter. And a hell of a hit list in my notepad. I also like the changes I have read as to which tags can be taken and when. Think it will add a nice level of strategy to this years game. PLUS...best time to compete against your own faction! The rivalry fun will be endless. So yeah...ill be collecting tags." - anon
Best 10
If your opponent has multiple tags in their collection, you are guaranteed to receive one of their best 10 tags if you haven't attacked them previously within six hours. Using the example collection below, attacking this player means you could receive anything from his own personal tag worth 101 points, down to the tag in 10th place, Chedburntest128, worth 3 points.

Worst Tag
If you decide to attack the same player within six hours of attacking them previously, you will receive the worst tag in their collection. Based on the image above, defeating this player would result in you receiving the tag belonging to Chedburntest316, worth just 1 point - the only exception to this would be if Chedburn owned your personal tag, which is always paid out as a priority over any other tags.
"I plan on taking part in it this year as I like the redesign and I think it should make it way more competitive and fun vs years prior." - ultraman
Green Theme
If you can't remember whether you've attacked someone within six hours or not, you can find out by checking their Competition Status on their profile. If a green theme is present, this means you haven't attacked them recently and will pay out one of their best ten tags when defeated. The tag graphic also displays their current point score, giving you a hint as to the quantity and quality of tags they may have.

If you're involved in a group attack, and the player you're attacking has more than one tag, you stand a 25% of receiving one of their tags if the attack is successful. Obviously, whoever lands the final hit will be guaranteed a tag, but now you have a 1 in 4 chance of grabbing a tag if you've made an assist too. The quality of the tag you receive will be determined by the 6-hour attack rules mentioned earlier, so make sure you're not involved in a group attack against someone you've recently defeated if you want to receive the best tags possible.
"It’s my second year in Torn and I have set myself the goal of participating in every Torn event as I ignored most of them when I first started." - Wuffernuck
Returned Tag Lock
You can return any tag to its original owner at any point during the competition. Returned tags will be locked until the owner hasmade three additional attacks stolen three additional tags. Please note that this system counts attacks made after the tag has been returned, not during the tournament as a whole. So if a player decides to return my own tag to me, I must then make three more attacks after this point to make it available to others upon my defeat.
"I am going to be taking part. I mainly want to see what happens. I haven't really done dog tags before and I think it could be fun... I also just want another excuse to stack Xanax and take Vicodin. I just want to see how it goes!" - slimmyyycat
NOTE: The criteria to unlock your returned personal tag has now changed. You must steal three tags after its return in order to unlock it for other players to steal, rather than make three attacks.

"Yes, I am taking part in Dog tags. Why? For the merits of course. I joined the game in May 2020 and skipped Dog Tags 2020 as I was too low-statted and was also going through attack fatigue after Elimination 2020. I was going to take part in May Dog tags but my family were visiting and I could not. I believe I was in the minority that felt a tiny bit happier that the May version got cancelled. I took that postponing as a sign from our Almighty creator, Chedburn and I am going for the merits this time." - anon
