Market Report May

Why should you buy your attacking supplies today? How many points were earned on Museum Day? Are BCTs about to crash? And which day is the best day to sell Advanced Weapons and Armors?
In this month's Market Report, we investigate why attacking supplies might become costly over the summer, the full impact of Museum Day, why BCTs could be about to crash, why recent developments will affect the price of booze, and why you should always sell your advanced weapons and armors on a specific day of the week.

ATTACK THE MARKET

The postponement of Dog Tags 2022 left many players with excess attacking supplies on hand. However, with the competition now confirmed to be returning on the 20th of June, we may soon see a second spike in the item market as players prepare once more for this delayed event.

"The Dog Tags postponement resulted in Xanax, Medical Supplies, and other war-related items to go through a weird stage of spiking on prices (such as Xanax hitting $850k on a really busy night a few days ago) following the cancelation of DogTags." - Hamburguejas

"Rescheduling of the dog tag event could cause a rise in the cost of Xanax as there may be less runners. My thought is Can and FHC prices will be mostly stable with minor fluctuations due to increased demand (mostly affecting cans)"
- Nomos

Xanax has now fallen to an average price of just $835k, but with news of the event's rescheduling starting to circulate, we expect this trend to reverse soon. This may also happen to Energy Drinks and FHCs, both of which saw a huge dip after Dog Tags was rearranged. Cans and Coupons have now recovered much of their lost value, but with several attacking events on the horizon, there could be room to gain even more.

"20-25E Energy drinks are at an optimal price right now, if you got stockpiles, sell sell sell!"
- Hamburguejas

"Would recommend you buy some cans as many as you can afford now. Hold them for a while and sell them just before the event starts. Big profit. trust me bro."
- Yellowflash

Beyond Dog Tags, we have World Population Day running from the 10th-12th of July. August has no attacking events scheduled, but September will see the return of Elimination, followed by Halloween in October. Attacking supplies will likely remain in high demand for some time yet, and that means that medical items will be able to build on their recent value improvements, with both FAKs and SFAKs close to beating their yearly high after gaining $500-$1,000 this month.

Pictured: First Aid Kit one-month price graph. Larger Link

Morphine is also making impressive gains, with $800 having been added to its price since early May. Much of the demand for medical supplies likely comes from the increasing popularity of Ranked Warring, which is now seeing record numbers of matchups made each week. The result of this is that more attacks are being made, with weekly spikes close to topping 200,000 on a regular basis.

The imminent return of Dog Tags will only add to the demand for warring essentials. However, we have noticed that temporaries have bucked this trend, with Smokes, Pepper Spray, and Tear Gas all falling or staying flat over the past month.

"The smoke has cleared after the winter smoke grenade craze as the prices have somewhat stabilized. There were a few notable peaks but the market ended higher than it started... Pepper spray also seems to be falling after a peek last month however no recovery is in sight... Tear gas was a sob story. With a peek on the 7th then declines throughout the month they lost $2,000 in value." -
Slimmyyycat

Concussion Grenades are unlikely to see much use during Dog Tags due to their high price, but it's worth noting that their value has fallen considerably of late, falling from $5.1m to $4.1m. If that trend continues, and their supply continues to increase, Concussion Grenades may begin to see more widespread use.

Of course, protecting your tag haul is just as important as building it, and Aaassh has noticed that the price of a Small Explosive Device was on an upward curve until Dog Tags was temporarily cancelled.

"SED prices went up slightly in anticipation of Dog Tags. They have still been hovering at a pretty high amount with RW still going on full steam. Will we see a sharp increase again in the SED prices with the new Dog Tag days? Considering how the event has changed now where information is public, it would make sense to stock up on SEDs to prevent losing tags during the downtimes."
- Aaassh

Pictured: SED three-month price graph. Larger Link

The price of SEDs has dipped over the past week, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see them building on their spring gains as news about Dog Tags begins to spread. Our prediction is that the price of the attacking supplies mentioned in this article will soon increase, and won't be this cheap again for many months. If you're short, stock up now!

NICE LITTLE NEST EGG

Hamburguejas notes that chocojumps remain a cheap alternative to happy jumps right now, with the low price of Easter Eggs making this a viable training method for players looking to cheer themselves up before a trip to the gym.

"The Easter Eggs candies are at a really low price lately, 40-60k, easy to flip and good to use if you are in a faction with candy-boosting perks!" - Hamburguejas

Each of the base easter eggs crashed in early May following the announcement of planned changes to the competition. Having been valued well into six figures back in April, many eggs are now going for just $60,000, which is decent value considering they provide 50 happy when used.

Pictured: Black Easter Egg three-month price graph. Larger Link

However, for this price, you can gain 75 happy from a bag of tootsie rolls, so while their low value can be used to justify munching on your existing egg collection for a choco jump, we wouldn't advise buying them for regular training unless their price falls further. But, as Hamburguejas suggests, easter eggs can be bought and flipped for profit - or kept, because we still aren't sure what the happiness value of these items will be when they are mass converted next year.

"Lollipops + Box of choco - Looks like both of these being inflated!"

BLOODS BOILING?

World Blood Donor Day returns on Monday, providing a 50% reduction in cooldown and life penalties when withdrawing blood. We'll go into greater detail on the price of bloods in Sunday's article, but there are a few basic observations we can make regarding this event in the meantime.

"With blood donor day a few weeks away (at time of writing), of course blood prices are going to plummet since everyone and their mother will be filling bags for merits, faction competitions, and just to restock on their own personal reserves. It's a great time for factions to nab cheap blood bags if they want stock up early for future wars." - Yewnit

Personally, I don't see empty blood bags rising in price by much over the coming days, as they are already priced quite high. Once the event has finished, I think we can expect to see only modest drops in the price of most bloods too. High circulation types like O-positive and A-positive blood will likely remain unaffected, with low circulation types such as B-negative and AB-negative seeing falls of $1,000 at the low end, or as much as $5,000, depending on the event's popularity.

In short, there are few opportunities for profits to be made from blood donor day, but there may be some decent savings after the event if you prefer to buy other people's blood rather than squeeze out your own.

BUSINESS CLASS SET TO CRASH?

Tiger Day takes place at the end of July, during which time players can travel to South Africa and enjoy 5x the usual hunting experience gains, while also potentially bagging a few high-priced rare animals. Last year's event saw around 2,000 Business Class Tickets used by players keen to shorten their travel time to Johannesburg, and with a circulation of just 65,000, this extra demand can see their value rise by several hundred thousand in just a few days.

BCTs are also useful during Dog Tags, as players look to fly away to protect their tag haul for a specific period of time. Anticipation over these events may have contributed to the continuous price increase we've seen since January, with BCTs having grown from $5.4m to $8.9m in the first half of 2022.

Pictured: BCT one-year price graph. Larger Link

However, a more impactful trend has been the gradual lowering in the circulation of BCTs. The circulation graph shows a constant growth in BCT numbers over time, with occasional dips massively offset by the thousands pumped into the supply every Christmas. But as you can see, the number of BCTs in circulation is now falling and has done since the year began.

Pictured: BCT one-year circulation graph. Larger Link

There are various reasons why this could have happened, with one being that the low prices seen in early 2022 could have tempted more players into regular usage - a trend that has now continued even as prices have risen. Alternatively, it could be that the price of the Wind Lines Travel stock is to blame. Our recent stock market investigation reported that the price of WLT has risen by more than 12% over the past year, with the result being that only 83 additional investors bought up WLT stock during that time.

Regardless of the cause, few believe that BCTs can maintain their current price much longer, with a crash expected sooner rather than later.

"BCTs have reached their peak right now and are in a good position to sell." - Lightor

FLIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

As expected, this year's Tourism Day was the biggest yet, with last year's records smashed by a considerable margin. 2.4 million plushies sets were exchanged at the Museum this year, compared to 1.5 million in 2021. We also saw 1.5 million flower sets exchanged, with this too representing an increase on last year's total of 900,000 flower sets.

As you might expect, this has had a huge impact on the price of plushies and flowers, with almost every single one losing value in the immediate aftermath of the event. Lions lost the most value with a $10k drop noted, but monkeys and one or two others have managed to recover their previous value after making minimal losses.

Pictured: Monkey Plushie one-month price graph. Larger Link

As for the flowers, Tribulus Omanense and Cherry Blossoms lost the most, with price drops of $8k apiece. But yet again, some flowers bucked the trend, with African Violets now worth more than they were before Tourism Day, having experienced an increase in demand as the event drew close.

Pictured: African Violet one-month price graph. Larger Link

Sidellan contacted the Times to make an interesting observation regarding Lions and Tribs suggesting that the increased demand for Xanax provided by Ranked Warring is to blame for these extreme trends.

"At the moment the profit per camel is around 77k, lions with a more than 15% longer traveltime result only in around 73,5k. Why is that? The explanation seems to be Ranked Wars! Due to the much higher demand on Xanax, more people travel to South Africa to import Xanax. But if there is no Xan available, lions and African Violets are taken instead."

The result of this is an oversupply of Lion plushies and Tribulus Omanense, hence their recent price drops being harsher than others. African Violets have fared better, but Sidellan's observations suggest that they could be due for a price drop in the near future. Meanwhile, Yellowflash suggests that Edelweiss is going to stay low, and that Monkey Plushies still have room to grow.

"Price of Edelweiss just won't stop decreasing as most people who have all the flying merits, will fly only to rehab and just grab whatever's available over there. It's the same reason price of Chamois plushie is also dropping drastically over last few months. Uk, Swiss, Argentina all of them have similar flight times."

People fly swiss regularly for rehab. UK is popular for having 2 varieties of plushies and heathers which is a heaven for plushie runners who dont want to wait. I predict value of monkey plushies would be going up very soon.
So fly Argentina asap and stack them monkey plushies!"

THE HIGH POINT

Another inevitable consequence of Museum Day was the drop in the value of points witnessed shortly before the event began. Having topped out at $48,848 this year, the price of points has now fallen to $45,465 thanks to the huge number of points paid out by the Museum. In 2021, 31.6 million points were redeemed during the course of the event. This year, that number has swollen to 44.5 million - a 40% increase.

Pictured: Museum Points Redeemed Apr/May 2022. Larger Link

Of these 44.5 million points redeemed, 11.4 million were sold directly to the pawn shop during the event for the base price of $45k. For context, we typically see only 1-1.3 million sold to the pawn shop during a three-day period, and last year we witnessed 9 million points being pawned during Museum Day.

Many players choose to sell via the pawn shop to avoid being buymugged when listing them on the point market. Since the current market price of points is only $500 more than the pawn price, such a strategy makes perfect sense at this time of year.

BOOZE SET TO DROP?

Booze prices have been healthy of late, with Moonshine leading the charge by gaining $300k in the past week. The 2, 3, and 4 nerve alcohols have also been increasing in value since the Christmas lull, so you could be forgiven for thinking that alcohol prices will remain high for some time yet.

But these recent trends haven't yet taken into account two recent developments, one of which has not yet been made public. The first development is the introduction of nerve-for-point exchanges within factions, with players now able to refill their nerve bar for 25 points. Points are incredibly cheap right now, so if factions decide to splurge on this new feature, the price of alcohol will surely depress.

Prices will be further reduced when a popular player suggestion is implemented at some point in the near future. The Torn City Times can confirm that a nerve-producing stock is currently in development, with its release almost certain to affect the value of alcohol even further. The only item that might escape this fate is Beer, as players look to stock up ahead of International Beer Day.

"I believe the value of both bottle of beer & keg of beer will significantly increase in the next month because of International Beer Day on August 5th. I think the spike in price will be determined by how many people who hadn't stock up glass of beer from last xmas." - -kevin

As -kevin suggests, many players like to use their leftover Christmas beer for this event, as opposed to purchasing up new stocks. But this may change now that beer is cheaper, having fallen from its January peak of $4,7k to a slightly more reasonable $3.7k. That being said, beer bottle prices didn't rise ahead of last year's event, with the only noticeable trend being a price decrease in the days after.

Pictured: Bottle of Beer one-year price graph. Larger Link

The opposite was true regarding Kegs of Beer, whose value spiked to $15m just before Beer Day. Kegs have been slowly increasing in price since February, so it may be that these are the items to focus on if you're looking for something to flip.

ADVANCED WEAPONS AND ARMORS

Torn's patch notes have revealed that a project called Big Al's Bunker is currently in development, and some players have speculated that this may be the name of the much-anticipated Advanced Weapon and Armor exchange. Does this mean that players should look to keep hold of their low-value Advanced Weapons and Armors? Who knows, but if you decide to sell, Polarbear can tell you precisely when you should do it.

"If you're looking to have a crack at opening caches it’s best to purchase over the weekend / Monday as stock is plentiful and prices drop significantly by a few 100m at least. If you're looking to sell try and hold out until at least mid-week as prices typically jump due to lack of supply due to a drop in weekday warring!"
- Polarbear

Speaking of weapons, SexxySweety contacted the Times with an interesting observation regarding a recent game update affecting Flamethrowers.

"The flamethrower will rise in value now that only armor that stops it is eod? Not sure but I think this might cause rise in value and make gas station job even better." - SexxySweety

SexxySweety is right that EOD armor is the only type that can reduce a flamethrower's damage under normal circumstances, with this armor type giving the wearer a % chance to fully block incoming damage - Dune armor can also block damage, but only when under 1/4 life. But this has only been true for a short time, with several items and a bonus reclassified as per May's Patch Notes.

Last month, the Impenetrable Bonus provided by Assault Armor was modified slightly, with its ability to reduce bullet damage now restricted to MGs, Pistols, Rifles, SGs, and SMGs. Heavy Artillery, including the Flamethrower, is now useful against Assault Armor, with EOD armors and, to a lesser extent, Dune armors the only items capable of directly reducing the impact of Heavy Artillery.

While haven't seen much in the way of a price rise in flamethrowers since this announcement, we may do over time. What we have noticed is a dip in the value of Assault Armor following the reduced scope of their Impenetrable Bonus. Other items that have been recategorised recently include the Snow Cannon (previously a Machine Gun, now Heavy Artillery), and the Neutriux 2000 (previously Heavy Artillery, now Machine Gun).

Both of these items are too rare to analyse, but you can expect some price changes based on the requirements of those buying them.

MISCELLANEOUS

Neumune continues to fall and has lost another $150k over the past month - Dirty Bomb recovery has never been this cheap.

"Just realized that the price of a coat hanger has suffered a drop recently, from 889k (21st May) to 576k (4th June)." - ItzDaCheeze

"Gift Cards are going to see renewed popularity in the near future, not just among new players."
- Anon

"Gold necklaces are at a 3 year + high and circulating supply is approaching a 1 year low." - Trod94

"In case anyone wants to buy some Ketamine, it's at a yearly low at the moment." - Lightor

Someone manipulated the price of Birthday Cupcakes in early June, but they have retained part of this increase and are nearly $1m more valuable than a month ago.

"I noticed that this is usually about the time Love Juice starts slowly recovering value after its post-valentine drop. If the trend from previous years hold, it will only go up in value from here." - Thalenchar

Only around 200 Senet Sets were exchanged at the museum this year, and the price of both the board and the pieces have now fallen to levels we haven't seen in nearly three years.

"Injury Cache dropped from 150M down to 80M after this months subscriber gifts."
- Gangster

Irradiated Blood Bags rose by $6k in early June, but have now fallen slightly to sit at a price of $27k.

"Clothing items and caches have absolutely crashed! To all who are looking to invest in auctions, rare clothes and cache-opening, it would be an ideal time to hoard cheap caches and wait for their price to rise or to sell to avoid losses on previous investments, main reasons behind this crash can be found with the overflooding of RW items in the auction houses and trade forums." - Hamburguejas

Pornography is getting ever more expensive due to the existence of happy jump insurance, which has made the practice incredibly popular among new and old players alike. Erotic DVDs have gained $200k since early May, although their price curve has flattened somewhat in recent weeks.
