Patch Notes May

Find out what the developers did over the past month, why they did it, and how it will affect you in this roundup of May's most notable Patch Notes.
Patch List #237

This patch list consisted entirely of improvements and fixes. An error involving the sidebar whereby the chain timer occasionally appeared at 5:01 or more was remedied, as were two issues involving mobile users related to the topbar and news ticker. We've also remedied a situation whereby certain faction tree upgrades would appear available (blue) or ready to upgrade despite the prerequisites not being met.

Patch List #238

Weekend Warring

Torn's Ranked Warring system previously allowed wars to be scheduled between Thursdays and Sundays only, with factions able to specify a preference for weekdays (Thurs/Fri) or weekends (Sat/Sun) that would be honoured if both factions agreed.

Having listened to feedback from the community, we have now removed Sundays from the war schedule. This means that all wars will be fought between Thursday and Saturday only, with Thursday and Friday wars now prioritised if both competing factions have mixed preferences.

Faction Nerve

Faction members can now use their faction armory to refill nerve, in addition to the existing ability to refill their energy. To use this function, players must navigate to their faction armory and visit the Points page, where the option to Refill Nerve now sits next to the Refill Energy action.

Rental Days

Your property's rental status now displays the total number of days you have rented your property over the course of your current lease and previous leases. This value can be seen on the right, with the number of days remaining on your lease shown on the left.

Unfortunately, as some players have noticed, the total lease value does not include rental periods before this update was made in early May. Over time, this issue will rectify itself, and any lease terms that began after this patch will be reflected fully.

Personal Perks

The Personal Perks panel found on the Home page now uses categorisation and pagination to display your various perks in a more accessible manner. Individual tabs for perks related to your Job, Education, Stocks, Merits, Faction, Property, Enhancers, and Books are now available. And if any of these areas provide more than five perks, the rest can be viewed by clicking the dots at the bottom to change the page.

Patch List #239

Dog Tags 2022

After several aborted launch attempts, the Dog Tags 2022 event scheduled for May 16th was cancelled and rescheduled for sometime in June. This event was revealed to have undergone a design overhaul before its cancellation, with changes to the tag theft mechanics, NPC tag values, and data provisions all implemented ahead of the event.

Following further discussions between Chedburn and the Committee, and the public response to the new event, we can reveal that additional changes will be made to the Dog Tag event's format. Furthermore, the developers are confident that the issues experienced during the initial rollout have been overcome, and to ensure this is the case, we will be conducting public launch tests over the next few weeks.

KIA Upgrade

A graphical improvement has been made to the KIA honor bar, with the old version having been replaced by a cleaner, sharper variant. The new honor bar is on the left.

Patch List #240

Pre-Filled Names

Based on an initial suggestion by MightyGoober, and a more recent one by PlatinumDevil, we have now added the ability for scripts to prefill player names & values into a faction's Give to User form via URL. This quality of life update will help streamline the process of faction payouts for those using the necessary scripts.

Patch List #241

Weapon Recategorisation

Several weapons have been recategorised so as to better reflect their attributes. Scrooge's lootable Snow Cannon, previously a Machine Gun, has now been designated as a Heavy Artillery weapon. The Neutrilux 2000 weapon goes in the opposite direction, and is now classed as a Machine Gun after previously being listed as a piece of Heavy Artillery. No changes have been made to the statistical abilities of these weapons.

Assault Armor

The Impenetrable bonus provided by Assault Armor has been modified slightly. Previously, this bonus was known to decrease all enemy bullet damage, but we have decided that Heavy Artillery weapons should be excluded from Impenetrable's remit. Assault Armor will now reduce bullet damage from MGs, Pistols, Rifles, SGs, and SMGs.

New Player Chat

One significant amendment not mentioned in our patch lists was a change made to the qualifying criteria for New Player Chat. As bogie explains in this post, New Player Chat originally limited its users to players under 31 days old. This was later changed to players who were Level 12 and under, with those reaching Level 13 instantly moved to Global Chat upon doing so.

Over time, we've realised that New Player Chat contains a large number of experienced players holding at level 12 or below, and their presence often dominates the environment within this chat room. To ensure that NPC is truly populated by new players, we have now added another activity-based requirement to this chat room.

Moving forward, players who have logged 14 days of game time (not in-game age) will automatically be moved from New Player Chat to Global Chat. The existing level restriction remains in place, meaning that players can hold at level 12 and retain their place in NPC until they pass 14 days of game time. This should see a greater number of new players in New Player Chat, while also ensuring those who aren't entirely ready can remain a short while.

Staff Applications

Applications are now open for Torn's volunteer staff positions. All players are free to apply, but we have a preference for those who are over a year old and who access Torn primarily via a computer or laptop, rather than a smartphone. Previous applicants are encouraged to apply, but please note that a maximum of eight staff members will be accepted in this round of applications, so please don't be disheartened if you don't make it.

If you are interested in applying to become a volunteer helper please email our Community Manager at cm@torn.com with your name/ID and answers to the following questions:

1. Why do you want to be a helper?
2. How extensive is your knowledge of Torn? Do you have any examples where you have had to use this knowledge to help others?
3. What do you see a staff member's role being?
4. What are your feelings regarding the Torn community and the current staff team (if any), and how do you hope to improve this by being a helper yourself?
5. What was the first game you played?
6. What keeps you playing Torn?
7. If you could change any part of Torn, what would it be?
8. What device do you primarily use when playing Torn? (Mobile/PC?)
9. If accepted onto the team what would your personal goal as a staff member be? Do you have aspirations to advance to moderator/officer positions or is helper just right for you?
10. Do you moderate/staff any other sites or games? If so, which?

These applications are open until 11:59pm TCT on Sunday, June 12th. Any applications made after this date will not be considered. If you'd like to know what being a helper entails, please take a look at this article written by Grif. And if you're looking to gain a staff position with the goal of further progression, this article by BennyH also contains several useful insights.
